Additionally, the two miniature trains are once again touring the park. The amusement park, which is open seasonally, will be open Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.. Storyland, which is next to the amusement park, is also open on weekends, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call (504) 482-4888. More drama in Memphis. In the last few months Lib- ertyland has received about $600,000 worth of damage from vandalism, making it even harder to get a new park operator to move in. The damage was not only normal graffiti, but some- thing much more serious. All of the copper wire and plumbing was stolen from the buildings. Some other sticky points for the new operators is that the roller coaster was sold, taking away one of the two center pieces for the site. Memphis owns the carousel, but its final destination hasn’t been guaranteed. To make matters worse, the mayor revealed a plan to turn the old amusement park into a new stadium site. We’ll keep you up to date on the outcome. I have to say it was one of the finest restorations I’ve ever seen, and one of the cleanest car- ousels around. They really take pride in their carousel. It’s a very nice museum complex with a new traction train exhibit opening soon. Well worth the visit, if you are in the area. The Nunley carousel has finally found a home. After years of fighting and arguing, the politicians came to their senses and are allowing the carousel to go where the public fought for years to place it. Its new home will be Museum Row, a stretch of Charles Lindbergh Boulevard that is also home to the Cradle of Aviation Museum, the Children’s Museum of Long Island, the Long Island Museum for Science and Technology, and the Nassau County Firefighter’s Museum. The park is located along the Chesapeake Bay, south of the town of Edgemere and southeast of Baltimore City in Baltimore County, Maryland. North Point State Park occupies the southeastern portion of the Patapsco River Neck. The park was acquired by the state between 1987 and 2000. Sidewalks in the downtown, and in a number of outlying areas, boast a horse menagerie scattered along roadways. Outdoor public sculptures of this sort are not uncommon: Chicago has Sidewalk Cows. Joseph Kerski tells the story, using Esri Story Maps, of Sidewalk Boots in a small town in Texas (the principal author thanks Dr. Kerski for sending his information: Kerski, 2016). Meridian has Sidewalk Carousel Horses. A bit of superficial research suggests a simple local connection as to WHY carousel horses: Meridian is home to a carousel, not readily visible, that is unique. Indeed, according to Wikipedia [2017, Dentzel Carousel and Shelter Building], The Highland Park Dentzel Carousel and Shelter Building is a carousel and building in Highland Park in Meridian, Mississippi. Manufactured about 1896 for the 1904 St. Louis Exposition by the Dentzel Carousel Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the carousel was sold and shipped to Meridian. Highland Park Dentzel Carousel has been in operation since 1909 and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987. It is the only remaining two-row stationary Dentzel menagerie in the world. ………………….. Original oil paintings of museum quality adorn the top crown of the carousel. The carousel is approximately 30 feet (9.1 m) in diameter, smaller than the time's standard 2-abreast — 42 feet (13 m) in diameter, with 28 animals, two-abreast, and 2 chariots, providing seating for 36 people.

Wilcox Giraffe, outside row stander, circa 1980 Carver W.P. Wilcox was based in Orange County, California and taught most the Southern California carvers working today. This giraffe is a copy of a Philadephia Toboggan Company giraffe. It was painted by Marge Swenson. W.P. gave the giraffe to me so that the children who come visit my studio can pet it. After retiring as a wood carver, W.P. went on to become a gold prospector. Dentzel Carousel Company Horse, second row jumper, circa 1990 This horse is a fiberglass casting of a Dentzel jumper formerly on the Lagoon Carousel at Knott’s Berry Farm. She was cast by Ron Perkins of Ronart Glass and Animation, who made many of the decorative elements at Knott’s. I used her on the Santa's Village carousel to keep the ride in balance when I had an outside row figure off for refurbishment. 2 A1 M.C. Illions & Sons Carousell Works Pony, third row stander, circa 1905 This pony was last used in 1978 on the Kiddieland Carousel at the Pomona Fair. The gold-leaf mane is typical of carver Marcus Illions, who received his training at the Savages Company of King’s Lynn, England. Illions had fled Russia as a young man and ended up in England, then immigrated to the U.S.
