New summer camps in fiber CHILDREN’S CLASSES art, printmaking and other media are available this year. [see pages 6, 8 & 10] Whether your children love theater or painting, photography or music, we’ll have a camp to spark their creativity. See pages 16-17 for our Camps-at-a- Glance schedule. Please join us as we open the summer season at Family Day on April 29 when the historic Dentzel Carousel comes to life again to begin its 97th season at Glen Echo Park. Our 2017 Summer Concert Series will once again bring music to the Park every Thursday evening from June through August. Held in the covered Bumper Car Pavilion, all performances are free and feature local bands playing jazz, blues, folk, classical, Latin, and more. The Partnership and the Park’s resident visual arts organizations will collaborate again this season to present Art Walk in the Park, a monthly evening of open studios & galleries, artist demonstrations, and refreshments presented on the first Friday of the month from May through September. See page 96 for more details. ADULT & TEEN ADULT Finally, our annual Gala in the Park will be held on May 20. The theme for this year’s can’t-miss event is Celebrate VISUAL ARTS & VISUAL MUSIC History in Our Backyard . [see page 96] It is always a great evening and a wonderful way to support the park’s unique programs and facilities. You can find everything you need to enjoy the Park’s classes and events in this catalog—or online at www.glenechopark.org. Katey Boerner, Executive Director, Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture A Note from the National Park Service Welcome to Glen Echo Park. I hope your visit here is enjoyable whether you visit to attend a show, festival or dance, to have a picnic, or take a class in any of the dozens of art forms that are studied here. Take a moment to experience the beauty of the Park and think about its history. Incredible fun has been AND PROGRAMS experienced here by thousands of people of all ages during the era of the amusement park. People left their cares at the front CHILDREN’S CLASSES gate and were thrilled riding on the Coaster Dips, scared in the Hall of Mirrors, and enchanted by the carousel. Visitors during the Great Depression and both World Wars did exactly that and more at Glen Echo Amusement Park. They danced Swing in the Spanish Ballroom at night and rode the streetcar back home to Washington D.C. If these walls could talk they would speak of courageous citizens who protested the amusement park’s segregation policy and ultimately won the fight to open the park to all in 1961. Walls would speak of restoration, reuse and a place of community. The National Park System turned one hundred years old in 2016 and the Find Your Park campaign helps us consider how important our National Parks are to our lives. We hope you will consider Glen Echo Park-“your park”-and come back again and again. Join a ranger led program in the coming year to learn more about this special place.
