ADULT & TEEN ADULT Katey Boerner, Executive Director VISUAL ARTS & MUSIC ARTS VISUAL Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture A Note from the National Park Service Welcome to Glen Echo Park. This is an exciting year for the National Park Service (NPS) as it celebrates its Centennial. This 100th anniversary is a defining moment, offering an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate our accomplishments as we prepare for a new century of stewardship and engagement. The NPS has set forth a Call to Action, a national effort to rally employees and partners to advance a shared vision for 2016 and the next 100 years (www.nps.gov/calltoaction). It describes specific goals and measurable actions that chart a new direction for the NPS as it enters its second century. One of the goals—Arts Afire—is to showcase our parks to new audiences through dance, AND PROGRAMS music, visual arts, and writing. Glen Echo Park is a premier place to explore these opportunities. CHILDREN’S CLASSES CLASSES CHILDREN’S We hope your experience here is enjoyable, whether you visit to attend a show, festival or dance, to have a picnic, or to take a class in any of the dozens of art forms that are studied here. As you enjoy the atmosphere of Glen Echo Park, please also take a moment to experience the beauty of the park and think about its place in American history. If these walls could talk they would speak of excitement and fun experienced by people of all ages over many decades. Visitors left their cares at the front gate and enjoyed thrilling rides like the Coaster Dips, the Gyroplane, the Ferris wheel, and the beloved carousel. During the Great Depression and both World Wars, people did that and more at Glen Echo Amusement Park. They danced Swing in the Spanish Ballroom and rode the streetcar back into the city to face the world again. If these walls could talk they would also speak of courageous citizens who protested the amusement park’s segregation policy and ultimately won the fight to open the park to all in 1961. Experience a park tour to explore more about the site as it was experienced in these eras (see page 94).
