Pickleball – Written by Zone 6 President Marshall Yaremcio, Interim Pickleball Coordinator I feel compelled to write this article to all Alberta 55 plus Pickleball players. Zone 6 took on the task of introducing Pickleball to the Games Committee and Alberta 55 plus membership in the /Barrhead Summer Games in 2013. Linda Dane – an avid Pickleball player – is knowledgeable and dedicated to Pickleball. She did an awesome job for the playoffs to the Canada Games with 83 members battling for the right to play in the Canada Games in 2014, and then in running the Canada Games Pickleball with other talented, knowledgeable people, and we are grateful for this. Due in part to her efforts, Pickleball was gaining popularity in leaps and bounds! Following this came the playoffs for the Summer Games in Strathmore held July 16-19th, 2015. Then “the ---- hit the fan” as the saying goes. Because the Pickleball at Strathmore was going to be played indoors instead of outdoors, and Linda was offended in not being ‘consulted about this decision’, she sent e-mails and voice messages to all Alberta 55 plus Pickleball players urging them to boycott both the playoffs and the Games. These type of decisions are made by the Host Community – not the Provincial Board – and not by Linda Dane. Strathmore had only 2 courts, and those were earmarked for Tennis, but there was plenty of space indoors for Pickleball. To add insult to injury, Linda chose to compete in the playoffs (held outdoors). Only 11 members attended the playoffs – in large part due to Linda’s ill-advised communications and discouraging remarks to her fellow players – and we were unable to fill our allotted quota to send to the Games. Linda and her partner won the right to represent Zone 6 in 55+ Women’s Doubles, and at Strathmore, they won gold in their division. How do the members who followed Linda’s urging to boycott feel now? She went to the Games and won a gold medal, and they stayed home and missed a golden, silver or bronze opportunity to play, and the chance to represent their zone! Some of these individuals may not be able to qualify in two years’ time due to advanced age or injury or health conditions. How unfair that the petulant and immature attitude of one person impacted so heavily on this one sport and on so many people. It may well influence the future of Pickleball at local, provincial and national levels. Pickleball, and Pickleball players do not deserve this, and Ms. Dane owes an apology (at the very least) to everyone involved, most especially to the Strathmore Games organizers and Alberta 55 plus. “Common sense is a genius dressed up in work clothes.” ZONE 7
