L. Hunt, Ph.D. University of Nebraska, 2016 Advisor: Ari Kohen Why do some social movements in abortion debates get more attention from the news media than others? Do movements that support the status quo receive more attention than those opposing the status quo? Through quantitative content analysis of eight major newspapers in South Korea, Ireland, and Canada and fieldwork in South Korea and Ireland, I theorize that anti- status quo groups – whether they are for or against abortion rights – may reopen debate conditions in their countries by strategically using international human rights norms and frames and gaining standing in the news media in environments that tend to be hostile to their views. “A word after a word after a word is power.” - Margaret Atwood, from the poem “Spelling” For Mike, who makes me believe in my power. Beyond UNL, there have been many who have influenced my dissertation research and I cannot do justice to their impact on my career and life generally. Other teachers and professors, including those from the University of Minnesota, Morris, have been integral in shaping me into the scholar I am today. While I cannot list them all, I will mention a few here. My father, William Hunt, taught the classes at UMM that drove me to Political Science even though he told me I should go into a different field (!). My mother, Patricia, who was my teacher until I was 16 (though she is still teaching me, really), shared with me her interest in everything and taught me how to write. Rich Heyman at UMM helped me hone my skills into academic writing. Another important influence on my career was Sam Schuman. Sam was an excellent professor and university administrator. He was both intelligent and exceedingly kind, and his encouragement got me through the rejections during the process of applying to graduate school when I was 19. He told me he knew that wherever I went I would excel, and that was exactly what I needed to hear. To Sam: “Be free, and fare thee well.” I was lucky enough to get to conduct fieldwork during my dissertation research. To the people who gave me their time in the form of personal interviews, often over delicious food or beverages, I owe great thanks. Thank you to In Shil, my Korean interpreter and research assistant during fieldwork in South Korea in 2012. She went above and beyond to help me and to make me feel at home in Seoul. The activists in South Korea were incredibly patient with me considering my inability to converse in their language and I thank them for their time and for sharing with me their passion and spirit. I was so lucky to be able to conduct fieldwork in Seoul and to meet these inspiring women. Because we believe that the evidence is on our side, we would like to assure a hearing for these views in the academic community. The issues of abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia have many dimensions–political, social, legal, medical, biological, psychological, ethical, and religious. Accordingly, we hope to promote an inter-disciplinary forum in which such issues can be discussed among scholars. We believe that by talking with one another we may better understand the values we share and become better informed in our expression and defense of them. We are distressed that the media often portray those favoring the value of human life as mindless zealots acting out of sectarian bias. We hope that our presence will change that image.     CHAPTER 12 Dilthey and Carnap: The Feeling of Life, the Scientifc Worldview, and the Elimination of Metaphysics Eric S. Nelson INTRODUCTION In this chapter I will propose a reinterpretation of the early Vienna Circle’s project of radical empiricism by reconsidering it in light of its under-appreciated Continental sources. After briefy discussing recent challenges to the standard view of logical positivism, such as its social- political context in “Red Vienna,” I examine the impact of “life- philosophical” thinkers such as Nietzsche and—in particular—Dilthey on the thought of Rudolf Carnap. Dilthey’s modernistic advocacy for empirical scientifc inquiry and his far-reaching critique of metaphysics as refecting a conceptually unjustifable and indemonstrable perspective expressing a “feeling of life” and interpretively (affectively, pragmatically) articulated in a “worldview” was embraced, via Dilthey’s student and Carnap’s teacher Herman Nohl (1879–1960), in Carnap’s pre- physicalist writings of the 1920s and the Vienna Circle’s 1929 manifesto.     Theatre Beyond Space and Time Reza Abdoh in conversation with Gautam Dasgupta he brilliant, visionary artist Reza Abdoh (1963–1995) was an Iranian-born theatre director, playwright, and founder of his own theatre company Dar T A Luz. Encompassing theatre, dance, literature, pop culture, video, and myth, his works include Bogeyman, Father Was a Peculiar Man, Tight Right White, and Quotations from a Ruined City, and were primarily seen in Los Angeles, New York City, and Europe. The PAJ Publications title Reza Abdoh, edited by Daniel Mufson, featuring essays on him and the text of The Hip-Hop Waltz of Eurydice, was published in 1999. His play, The Law of Remains, appears in the PAJ volume Plays for the End of the Century (1996). Abdoh’s work was so daring and original that the memory of his theatre productions, produced often in abandoned or site-specific spaces, has long remained for those who were fortunate to see his work, and then spread to those who never had that opportunity. Since Abdoh’s death, a documentary of his life has been made by Adam Soch. Reza Abdoh, a retrospective of the artist’s work, opened on June 3, 2018, at MoMA PS1 in Queens. The author employs her own methodology of investigating self-assessment of personal civic identity in adolescents. The research involves 208 humanitarian students of Ryazan State University named for S. A. Yesenin (Ryazan, Russia). The research indicates that there are only a few people showing high-level personal civic identity. Students of this category are characterized by a formed axiological sphere, which presupposes deep understanding of their civic stand, independence in their life choices, willingness to develop into members of civic society. People with low-level civic identity are characterized by extreme egocentricity and self-oriented motivation, underdeveloped self-regulatory functions, rigid thinking, stereotyped behavior patterns.
