M –– c E C Three years after the McCord and Stewart museums began the merger S O process, we are proud to say: mission accomplished! Thanks to the hard S work and good will of both museum staffs, we have successfully integrated R A our personnel and programs. Both institutions have benefited from this D G stimulating synergy and the Museum has, once again, finished the fiscal year with a balanced budget. S E With new exhibitions that highlight its impressive collection using T a contemporary approach, the Stewart Museum is attracting more and E F more visitors to St. Helen’s Island, while the McCord Museum is constantly W enhancing its dynamic programming and innovative educational and cul- A R tural programs. The new McCord Stewart Museum is, first and foremost, R O a museum devoted to history; it therefore has an important educational T M role to play. The constraints imposed by our current buildings and locations unfortunately prevent us from fulfilling this role as fully as we would like. At MONIQUE JÉRÔME-FORGET M CHAIR OF THE BOARD the moment, the space available for learning activities can accommodate U T McCORD STEWART MUSEUM approximately 20,000 children. However, if we want to properly meet the S H demand, this capacity should be at least three times higher. E E Advances achieved since the merger have shown that it is important U to combine the two museums into a single, easily accessible location as M soon as possible and significantly expand the floor space available for C displaying our collections and accommodating our public. The McCord H Stewart Museum is one of Montreal’s major tourist attractions; as such, it is crucial to make it more accessible and more emblematic of its unique A treasures. Combining our collections in a single, larger and more functional I location would be more efficient and enable us to exhibit a more represen- tative proportion of what we hold in storage. It would also save money on R 4 administrative costs. The Government of Québec and the Ministère de la – Culture et des Communications have clearly understood this; consequently, 5 O they have given us a grant to create the operating and technical program F for our proposed new museum. On behalf of my colleagues on the Board and everyone on the McCord Stewart Museum team, I would like to thank them for making it possible for us to take this first step towards realizing T our vision for the future. I would also like to thank the Conseil des arts de H Montréal for its encouragement and unwavering support. E Our highly professional President and Chief Executive Officer and her team have once again done a tremendous job; Suzanne Sauvage, a dedicated, exceptional manager, is supported by a team of outstanding 2 B professionals and all contribute enormously to the success of the McCord 0 O Stewart Museum. I would like to thank them wholeheartedly for the hard work and resourcefulness they have shown in implementing the merger 1 A of the two institutions. Thanks to them, our exhibitions have been both 5 R critical and popular successes, attracting media interest and thus further - D enhancing the Museum’s public profile. 2 Finally, I would like to express my appreciation to the members of our 0 Board of Trustees, who do such remarkable work, often behind the scenes. 1 François Duffar has moved to the board of the McCord Museum Founda- 6 tion, while four other trustees left the board during the past year: Salvatore Iacono, Christena Keon Sirsly, Alexandra Schwartz and Frederick Sneider. Marvin, P MP-1978.186.1.3748 © McCord Museum O –– R T M CONGRATULATIONS ON A JOB WELL DONE M E –– c C S The merger of the McCord and Stewart museums was not only a stimulat- O S ing challenge, it also provided numerous opportunities to clarify the new museum’s mission and take steps to ensure that it is seen as emblematic R A D G of our city’s rich history by Montrealers and visitors alike. The McCord E Stewart Museum has become a major player in the Montreal cultural scene, as illustrated by its high-profile exhibitions and growing attendance. S In fact, the Museum welcomed a record number of visitors to its two sites T F in 2015-2016. Furthermore, the quality and diversity of the sixteen exhibi- E R tions presented over the past year were recognized and praised by both W O the public and our peers across Canada and around the world. Several of A M these exhibitions were especially successful, namely Horst: Photographer R of Style, which attracted over 70,000 visitors at the Museum. Other exhi- T T bitions that made 2015-2016 such a banner year were Montreal Through the Eyes of Vittorio: 50 Years of City Life and Graphic Design, devoted to SUZANNE SAUVAGE M H the work of renowned Montreal poster designer Vittorio Fiorucci, and E PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, U McCORD STEWART MUSEUM D’Artagnan, Al Capone and the Others – Weapons and Legends at the S Stewart Museum, which featured 25 legendary characters, both real and E P fictional, and the weapons associated with them. U R The Museum’s ongoing commitment to innovation led it to develop M E citizenship programs that adequately reflect Montreal’s cultural and S social diversity; to this end, it participated in the citizen-led 25,000 I Tuques Project, in co-operation with the Red Cross, to knit hats for Syrian refugees. The Museum donated a total of 8,000 knitted hats created on D site or dropped off at the Museum. We also took part in an ephemeral E museum pilot project at Viger Square, the Maison du Père and Accueil N Bonneau, an initiative that gave many homeless people an opportunity 6 to discover the history of their city. In addition, working with the Centre T – hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM university hospital), we 7 A continued our intergenerational program Sharing our Memories, our N Stories, which enables young people to meet with seniors and develop D singular, productive relationships with them. The Museum acquired over 7,000 artefacts and more than 10 linear metres of textual archives in 2015-2016. Since our storage space is C already filled to capacity, the need for a larger facility is only becoming H more obvious. Thanks to the support of the Quebec government, we I are working on an operational and technical program to clearly define the needs to be addressed when developing our proposal for a new E 2 Museum site. F 0 The competence and expertise of our curators and conservators means they are invited to publish across Canada and internationally. We 1 E are proud of their renown and achievements, particularly the publication, 5 X in co-operation with the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), of the - E proceedings of Collecting Knowledge: New Dialogues on McCord Museum 2 C Collections, a 2013 colloquium that involved all of our curators. 0 U I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all the members of 1 T our team for their dedication and commitment; in particular, I would like 6 I to thank those who worked on updating our Website, which was awarded V a prize for best site, arts and culture, in the Boomerang digital competi- A E tion organized by Infopresse. I examine a broad selection of texts including graphic autobiography, biography, memoir, and diary in order to argue that writers and readers can, through these graphic narratives, engage with an eclectic and eccentric understanding of Canadian historical subjects. Contemporary Canadian comics are important for Canadian literature and life writing because they acknowledge the importance of contemporary urban and marginal subcultures and function as representations of people who occasionally experience economic scarcity. I focus on stories of “ordinary” people because their stories have often been excluded from accounts of Canadian public life and cultural history. Following the example of Barbara Godard, Heather Murray, and Roxanne Rimstead, I re- evaluate Canadian literatures by considering the importance of marginal literary products. Canadian comics authors rarely construct narratives about representative figures standing in place of and speaking for a broad community; instead, they create what Murray calls “history with a human face . the face of the daily, the ordinary” (“Literary History as Microhistory” 411).

Reviewed by Andrew Osler School of Journalism University of Western Ontario A substantive error in undergraduate essay writing almost as common as the use of "media" as a singular noun, is the notion that these media come in two distinct and forever separated phyla : "Print" and "Visual. 'I Television and the cinema, with their parades of eyeball icons and background miasmas of aural associations, constitute the "visual" media in the popular imagination. Print, on the other hand, tends to be popu- larly perceived as something else, (though pre- cisely what is never entirely clear). Ekposure over time to the ideas of the semiotics theor- ists, perhaps to McLuhan , or to the powerful imagery of James Joyce, eventually creates at least an intellectual awareness of the powerful- ly visual abstract symbolism that is always potentially present in the printed language. Even this belated recognition rarely is extended with any enthusiasm to the associated devices of design, typography, and graphics , however, and at some subconscious level, the entire inapprop- riate undergraduate distinction between print and visual remains in tact. It even has a way of unconsciously lingering on into the agendas of mature communication scholarship. Simply put, newspapers and magazines are not culturally perceived as being visual. Research in these media, therefore, remains pre- dominantly, with some rare and honourable excep- tions, the business of investigating the infor- mational content of words, sentences, and other grammatical paraphernalia.
