Dear Friends of the Fulcrum Foundation, “Together toward the goal” he theme of this year’s report is both a cheer and a challenge - to strive toward the loft y goal of providing a Tquality Catholic education in western Washington for all children who want one. We accept the challenge, full of hope, because working together we believe we can accomplish that goal. On this page and the ones that follow ribbons fl ow across each section in a symbolic display of the Fulcrum Foundation achieving its goals in support of Catholic schools. Also featured in this report are groups from each of the nine Catholic high schools that have inspired and challenged us by working together to achieve a goal. Th ey have excelled by demonstrating more than just an achievement. Th ey show us the true compassion and character that come from a Catholic education and they have strengthened our belief that in supporting Catholic schools our contributions will have a lasting impact for generations to come. A leading goal for the Fulcrum Foundation is the Embracing Our Legacy Capital Campaign, which will wrap up in December, 2008. We are pleased to announce the campaign is reaching its goal of $40,000,000, thanks to several generous bequests and the contributions of over 2,600 donors. Th e success of the campaign is an important part of our plan, and we are grateful to everyone who participated. As this report will show, over 910 children received tuition assistance grants of $750 each; some received additional assistance through special programs supported by the Jim and Margie Rose and Mick and Marnie Schreck families. Twenty-one schools received assistance to meet extraordinary claims on their budgets, and fourteen teachers were awarded Fulcrum grants to develop creative ideas for their classes. Th is year’s Celebration of Light was an extraordinary success, raising over $1,000,000 for the fi rst time in Fulcrum’s short history. Businesses like the Witt Company and Offi ceMax are partnering with Fulcrum to er off their products at reduced rates to Catholic schools. Young people are off ering their support through the “Amici” program. Led by Archbishop Brunett and a talented Board of Trustees, many people are striving “Together toward the goal.” On behalf of the students and schools that benefi t from your generosity, thank you for playing your part! Sincerely, Rev. Stephen C. Rowan Joe Womac Chair of the Board Executive Director 3 Fulcrum Foundation Annual Report 2008: Together toward the goal atholic schools provide a faith-based and Tuition Assistance Program Cvalue-rich education. Th ey also excel academically, as measured by Washington State’s assessment of student learning (WASL). No wonder many parents want a Catholic school education for their children! But a Catholic education may soon be out of reach for many families. Th e adjusted gross income of families who apply to Fulcrum for tuition assistance is approximately $22,000. Over 3,000 families apply for assistance each year. 2007 WASL Scores 4th grade Reading Math Writing One parent, a single mother, reports that “the Catholic education my Catholic Schools 89.1 75.1 76.9 daughter has received is such a rewarding experience” but “this next Public schools 76.4 57.9 60.1 Diff erence 12.7 17.2 16.8 year is going to be really diffi cult fi nancially for me.” Tuition assistance will help this mother and her daughter achieve the rewarding goal of a 7th grade Reading Math Writing Catholic Schools 86.8 78.1 90.2 Catholic education. Fulcrum’s plan is moving toward the goal of providing a meaningful level of assistance to all who need it. In FY 09, grants of tuition assistance will equal $850 for nearly 1,000 students. Each year, Fulcrum is giving hope to many more families. Th e gratitude of one parent speaks for many: “It is really hard to live on the edge, but because of the help that you’ve given us, my children can get a good edu- cation. Yet, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) disqualifi ed the team from the state football playoff s and eliminated all but two of the wins from their perfect season because of a clerical error. With no way to honor their coach on the fi eld, the players came together and dedicated themselves to changing the injunction so that no other team would lose an entire season for a minor error. In doing so, the team remembers coach Ennis’ instruction: “It’s not about what happened. It’s about what you do from this point forward.” Th e WIAA corrected the rule at its annual assembly this past spring. 54 Fulcrum Foundation Annual Report 2008: Together toward the goal y December of 2007, the people of Assistance to Schools in Need BChehalis had already lost the local Transalta mine and, with it, over 600 jobs. Th en came the fl ood, the loss of livestock, the closing of I-5, and disruptions of everyday life. Faced with these challenges, the people of St. Joseph’s parish and school in Chehalis provided a rallying point for rescue workers and a collection place for supplies. School teachers pitched in personally, going to homes that had been especially hard hit, shoveling mud away from doors, cleaning and painting damaged interiors, and in many ways helping their neighbors in need. 2008 Grant Recipients Christ the King School And when the waters went down, the school was open, a place where children Holy Family School - Auburn could be safe and learn what they would need for the future.
