The paper used butterflies of the family Papilionidae as a model system for testing evolutionary hypotheses, and included a revision of the Papilionidae of the region, as well as the description of some 20 new species. Wallace argued that the Papilionidae were the most advanced butterflies, against some of his colleagues such as Bates and Trimen who had claimed that the Nymphalidae were more advanced because of their possession of vestigial forelegs. In a very important section, Wallace laid out what is perhaps the clearest Darwinist definition of the differences between species, geographic subspecies, and local ‘varieties.’ He also discussed the relationship of these taxonomic categories to what is now termed ‘reproductive isolation.’ While accepting reproductive isolation as a cause of species, he rejected it as a definition. Instead, species were recognized as forms that overlap spatially and lack intermediates. However, this morphological distinctness argument breaks down for discrete polymorphisms, and Wallace clearly emphasised the conspecificity of non-mimetic males and female Batesian mimetic morphs in Papilio polytes, and also in P. -

Title: Karl Jordan: A Life in Systematics Abstract approved: Paul Lawrence Farber Karl Jordan (1861-1959) was an extraordinarily productive entomologist who influenced the development of systematics, entomology, and naturalists' theoretical framework as well as their practice. He has been a figure in existing accounts of the naturalist tradition between 1890 and 1940 that have defended the relative contribution of naturalists to the modem evolutionary synthesis. These accounts, while useful, have primarily examined the natural history of the period in view of how it led to developments in the 193 Os and 40s, removing pre-Synthesis naturalists like Jordan from their research programs, institutional contexts, and disciplinary homes, for the sake of synthesis narratives. This dissertation redresses this picture by examining a naturalist, who, although often cited as important in the synthesis, is more accurately viewed as a man working on the problems of an earlier period. This study examines the specific problems that concerned Jordan, as well as the dynamic institutional, international, theoretical and methodological context of entomology and natural history during his lifetime. It focuses upon how the context in which natural history has been done changed greatly during Jordan's life time, and discusses the role of these changes in both placing naturalists on the defensive among an array of new disciplines and attitudes in science, and providing them with new tools and justifications for doing natural history. One of the primary intents of this study is to demonstrate the many different motives and conditions through which naturalists came to and worked in natural history. -

Thinking with Birds: Mary Elizabeth Barber’s Advocacy for Gender Equality in Ornithology TANJA HAMMEL Department of History, University of Basel This article explores parts of the first South African woman ornithologist’s life and work. It concerns itself with the micro-politics of Mary Elizabeth Barber’s knowledge of birds from the 1860s to the mid-1880s. Her work provides insight into contemporary scientific practices, particularly the importance of cross-cultural collaboration. I foreground how she cultivated a feminist Darwinism in which birds served as corroborative evidence for female selection and how she negotiated gender equality in her ornithological work. She did so by constructing local birdlife as a space of gender equality. While male ornithologists naturalised and reinvigorated Victorian gender roles in their descriptions and depictions of birds, she debunked them and stressed the absence of gendered spheres in bird life. She emphasised the female and male birds’ collaboration and gender equality that she missed in Victorian matrimony, an institution she harshly criticised. Reading her work against the background of her life story shows how her personal experiences as wife and mother as well as her observation of settler society informed her view on birds, and vice versa. Through birds she presented alternative relationships to matrimony. Her protection of insectivorous birds was at the same time an attempt to stress the need for a New Woman, an aspect that has hitherto been overlooked in studies of the transnational anti-plumage -

East Usambara Conservation Area Management Programme (EUCAMP) The East Usambara rain forests are one of the most valuable conservation areas in Africa. Several plant and animal species are found only in the East Usambara mountains. The rain forests secure the water supply of 200,000 people and the local people in the mountains depend on these forests. The East Usambara Conservation Area Management Programme has established the Amani Nature Reserve and aims; at protecting water sources; establishing and protecting forest reserves; sustaining villager’s benefits from the forest; and rehabilitating the Amani Botanical Garden. The programme is implemented by the Forestry and Beekeeping Division of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Touris m with financial support from the Government of Finland, and implementation support from the Finnish Forest and Park Service. -

The drought – at least on the Highveld – appears to be over; the Brown-veined White (Belenois aurota) migration has passed its peak, but is still going strong. Unfortunately, the rain is too late for our rare local butterflies, such as the Highveld Blue (Lepidochrysops praeterita), but here’s hoping that there will be lots of late-summer butterflies in the months ahead. Please support the newsletter and forward photographs, trip reports or comments to [email protected] Restructuring of LepSoc Africa Council To accommodate the retirement of Mark Williams as Metamorphosis editor, LSA Council have made the following changes: • Dave Edge will take over Mark’s position as Editor of Metamorphosis. Alan Gardiner and Silvia Kirkman will be assisting Dave (refer to Metamorphosis under the PUBLICATIONS section). • Peter Ward has – gallantly – taken over Dave’s role as Treasurer of the Society. To assist Peter, Hanna Edge will perform a bookkeeping function. • Reinier Terblanche will remain LepSoc Africa’s Conservation and Research officer, but will incorporate Peter’s National Permit responsibilities into his portfolio. Highveld Butterfly Club Braai The HBC held its traditional year-starting braai at Hermann Staude’s farm on 10 February. The weather was good and more than 20 LSA members and their friends pitched up. 1 There weren’t too many butterflies – I counted 25 species (Abundance Index: 3.9 – Average), but we saw a couple of Marsh Sylph (Metisella meninx). Thanks to everyone who attended and to Hermann and Louisa who were, as usual, great hosts! NBA Photographic Competition As part of the National Biodiversity Assessment (NBA) synthesis report – of which SALCA was a component – SANBI have asked LepSoc Africa to choose a picture of a butterfly, to be displayed on the front cover of the report. -
