2021 US Dollars Butterfly Pupae To the Butterfly Keeper January 2021 2021 Butterfly Pupae Supplies Happy New Year, thank you for downloading our 2021 US$ pupae price list and forms. Last year was a challenge for everyone and the damage caused by the pandemic to the Butterfly trade was considerable. Many facilities were forced to close their doors to the public and therefore received no income. We ourselves had to shut for seven months out of twelve and as I write in January there is no sign of us being allowed to open in the next two months at least. This hardship has been multiplied in the situation of our suppliers as they have no government support. IABES did manage to get some financial support to them during the first extensive lockdown but spread over many breeders it could not replace the income they get from their pupae. Along with problems here and at source the airline industry is really struggling and getting what pupae we can use, onto a suitable flight has caused us many a sleepless night telephoning Asia at one extreme and South America at the other. However, we trust that we will come out of this global problem and be able revert to normal sometime during the spring. We still guarantee that all our pupae conform to all international standards and comply with all current legislation. We have a system in place that gets pupae to US houses in an efficient manner. We have had a very small price increase this year mainly because of increased airfreight costs. -

This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution International License (CC BY). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Abstract Kogyae Strict Nature Reserve, the only one in Ghana, was established to promote scientific re- search, particularly on how nature revitalizes itself after major disasters, and also to check the southward drift of the savannah grassland. This study presents the first comprehensive inventory of species composition and diversity of insects of the Reserve. Insects were surveyed between September 2011 and June 2012 to capture the end of the rainy season, the dry season and the peak of the wet season. Samples were taken from two sites within the Reserve, Dagomba and Oku using various sampling techniques including pitfall traps, malaise traps and sweep nets. Insect com- munities were characterized in terms of, 1) species richness estimators, 2) species richness, 3) Shannon-Weiner Index of Diversity, 4) Pielou’s evenness and 5) Bray-Curtis similarity. -

Title: Karl Jordan: A Life in Systematics Abstract approved: Paul Lawrence Farber Karl Jordan (1861-1959) was an extraordinarily productive entomologist who influenced the development of systematics, entomology, and naturalists' theoretical framework as well as their practice. He has been a figure in existing accounts of the naturalist tradition between 1890 and 1940 that have defended the relative contribution of naturalists to the modem evolutionary synthesis. These accounts, while useful, have primarily examined the natural history of the period in view of how it led to developments in the 193 Os and 40s, removing pre-Synthesis naturalists like Jordan from their research programs, institutional contexts, and disciplinary homes, for the sake of synthesis narratives. This dissertation redresses this picture by examining a naturalist, who, although often cited as important in the synthesis, is more accurately viewed as a man working on the problems of an earlier period. This study examines the specific problems that concerned Jordan, as well as the dynamic institutional, international, theoretical and methodological context of entomology and natural history during his lifetime. It focuses upon how the context in which natural history has been done changed greatly during Jordan's life time, and discusses the role of these changes in both placing naturalists on the defensive among an array of new disciplines and attitudes in science, and providing them with new tools and justifications for doing natural history. One of the primary intents of this study is to demonstrate the many different motives and conditions through which naturalists came to and worked in natural history. -

I trust you all have returned safely from your December break (assuming you had one!) and are getting into the swing of 2018? With few exceptions, 2017 was a very poor year butterfly-wise, at least in South Africa. The drought continues to have a very negative impact on our hobby, but here’s hoping that 2018 will be better! Braving the Great Karoo and Noorsveld (Mark Williams) In the first week of November 2017 Jeremy Dobson and I headed off south from Egoli, at the crack of dawn, for the ‘Harde Karoo’. (Is there a ‘Soft Karoo’?) We had a very flexible plan for the six-day trip, not even having booked any overnight accommodation. We figured that finding a place to commune with Uncle Morpheus every night would not be a problem because all the kids were at school. As it turned out we did not have to spend a night trying to kip in the Pajero – my snoring would have driven Jeremy nuts ... Friday 3 November The main purpose of the trip was to survey two quadrants for the Karoo BioGaps Project. One of these was on the farm Lushof, 10 km west of Loxton, and the other was Taaiboschkloof, about 50 km south-east of Loxton. The 1 000 km drive, via Kimberley, to Loxton was accompanied by hot and windy weather. The temperature hit 38 degrees and was 33 when the sun hit the horizon at 6 pm. -

African Butterfly News celebrates its first year of existence; the first edition, 2016-5, was circulated in September last year. The photographic competition commenced in August 2016, so the annual award will be made in the next, Spring Edition – for purposes of the photographic competition, the season starts in August and ends in July. A reminder that the newsletter is circulated every two months: Late Summer (January and February) – circulated in January Autumn (March and April) – circulated in March Early Winter (May and June) – circulated in May Late Winter (July and August) – circulated in July Spring (September and October) – circulated in September Early Summer (November and December) – circulated in November You will all be aware of the devastating fires that the southern Cape experienced in June. Dave and Hanna Edge, LepSoc Africa’s Treasurer and Membership Secretary respectively, were caught up in this drama, and had to evacuate their house (refer to Dave’s eyewitness account below). Fortunately, the building survived the fire, although the nearby Brenton Blue Reserve was incinerated. All fences, sign boards and marker-posts were destroyed – it is hoped that some larvae or pupae of the Brenton Blue (Orachrysops niobe) are still alive, safely underground. See a report under COREL under the “Projects” section. Some of you may have seen an article in the Sunday Times, by Aaron Hyman, a friend of Christopher Dobson. This magazine relies on material from you, the members of LepSoc Africa. -

Temporal variation and phenology of tropical insect communities and the role of environmental factors controlling this variation is poorly understood. A better understanding is needed, for example, to predict the effects of climate change on tropical insect communities and to assess the long- term persistence of tropical communities. We studied seasonal and inter-annual variation in tropical fruit- feeding butterflies by exploiting a unique 137-month abundance time series of .100 species, sampled at 22 locations in the medium altitude montane rain forest of Kibale National Park, western Uganda. Precipitation peaked twice per year, about 20 d after each equinox. Vegetation greenness peaked approximately 33 d later. Species richness and abundance of butterflies peaked about 2 and 3 months, respectively, after the greenness peak. -

The other genera in the Subtribe incertae sedis in the Afrotropical Region are Cupidopsis, Pseudonacaduba, Catochrysops, Lampides, Uranothauma, Cacyreus, Harpendyreus, Leptotes, Cyclyrius, Tuxentius, Tarucus, Zintha, Zizeeria, Zizina, Zizula, Brephidium, Oraidium, Azanus, Eicochrysops, Euchrysops, Orachrysops, Lepidochrysops, Thermoniphas and Oboronia.
