June 28 – July 16 2017 Cultural Center of the Philippines SYNOPSES OF THE PLAYS FEATURED WORKS Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (CCP Little Theater) SET A June 28, July 7, 12, 16 – 3:00PM | June 28, July 6, 11, 15 – 8:00PM Loveteam Playwright: Oggie Arcenas; Director: Michael Williams To earn his place among the stars in show business, Allen is willing to pay any price and to commit to any sacrifice. But what if it is not his sacrifice that the gods of fame and fortune demand, but that of his only friend’s? Cast: Alex Yasuda Andrei Vegas Stage Manager: Mara Agleham Oggie Arcenas Oggie is an active member of the Writer’s Bloc, an organization of playwrights that is based in Metro Manila. Although this is his 4th trip to the VLF and is now considered a VLF “veteran”, he still regards himself as a newbie when it comes to playwrighting, and feels that he still has an enormous amount of learning and writing to do before he can consider himself a “true” playwright. Oggie has a PhD in Agricultural Economics from Michigan State University, with Environmental and Natural Resource Economics as his area of specialization. After completing his graduate degree, he worked for the World Bank in Washington D.C., but decided to move back to the Philippines in 2005 after living in the United States for thirteen years. Currently, Oggie is a member of the faculty of the U.P. School of Economics in Diliman, and just recently discovered the joys of owning a pet dog. Michael Williams With over 100 roles to his credit, Michael has been performing in Philippine theatre since 1982. He began his career in Repertory Philippines’ production of “A FLEA IN HER EAR” which is an English translation of the French farce “Le Dindon”. Within his first year at Rep, Michael progressed from ensemble and support roles to playing romantic lead-roles as well as comic character roles. In 1984 Michael received great notices for his performance in “AIN’T MISBEHAVIN’” a musical review featuring the work of jazz great, RCA recording artists Fats Waller. In 1989 Michael was chosen to be part of the original London cast of “MISS SAIGON” in London’s West End. After a year with that company, Michael moved on to perform in yet another West End musical – Rogers and Hammerstein’s “THE KING AND I” produced for the centennial celebration of the Hammerstein Estate in 1990, with Richard Hammerstein Jr. directing. In this production Michael essayed the role of Lun Tha the romantic lead. Since Michael’s return to the Philippine theatre scene, he has turned in a few more sterling performances. Most notable of these were his portrayal of the tragic hero Javert in the musical, “LES MISERABLES,” and Don Quixote in “MAN OF LA MANCHA,” Dr. Jekyll in “JEKYLL AND HYDE” and won a special citation from the GAWAD BUHAY AWARD for playing the role of Captain Hook in Rep’s “PETER PAN” He is currently an Artistic Director of Full House Theatre Company, the theater division of Resorts World Manila. Michael appears through the courtesy of Resort World’s Full House Theater Company. Things take a turn for the worse when a client comes in, demanding for a falsified account that would revise an important part of Pilipinas Kong Mahal's history. At gunpoint, Ambet and Nato discover that the real enemy might actually be too close for comfort. SARE, Vol. 58, Issue 1 | 2021 A Convergence of Filipino Worlds: An Onomastic Reading of Edgar Calabia Samar’s Janus Silang Novels Maria Rhodora G. Ancheta University of the Philippines-Diliman, Quezon City, the Philippines Abstract Edgar Calabia Samar’s Janus Silang book series is a significant body of contemporary young adult fantasy novels in the Philippines. Samar’s ambitious series that successfully melds alternate online tech -worlds, everyday Filipino life, and ancient supernatural, god-inhabited worlds, is worthy of study. In creating this fantasy world, the Janus Silang series underscores the richness of Filipino mythology and lore by cohesively layering these lived worlds by way of spatial and temporal play. This paper wishes to study the value of this “world(s)-building”, entering this by way of the study of onomastics, the study of proper names of all kinds and the origins of names. Using both toponomastics and anthroponomastics, or the study of place names and human naming, respectively, this inventive, powerful focus on naming solidifies the Janus Silang series’ development of unique Filipino characters and narratives and its reintroduction of the cultures of its imaginary worlds for young, contemporary Filipino and global readers. Keywords: Janus Silang, Filipino mythology, literary onomastics, anthroponyms, toponyms Edgar Calabia Samar’s Janus Silang book series is a significant body of contemporary young adult fantasy novels in the Philippines. Campos / Ghostly Allegories 611 GHOSTLY ALLEGORIES: HAUNTING AS CONSTITUTION OF PHILIPPINE (TRANS) NATIONAL (CINEMA) HISTORY Patrick Campos University of the Philippines Film Institute [email protected] Abstract By reading through the con–texts of Yam Laranas’s The Echo (2008) and Kelvin Tong’s The Maid (2005), the essay considers three Filipino genres that ironically gathered momentum at the time of the Philippine film industry’s crisis and decline in the 1990s up to the 2000s – the historical drama, the OFW (overseas Filipino worker) film, and horror. In the process, the essay constitutes an alternative map of Philippine cinema premised on inter-national transactions across states and film industries, on the one hand, and on the nodal and spectral bodies of Filipinas that network these states and industries, on the other hand. Dwelling on multiform hauntings, it ultimately focuses on how nations/cinemas – through (de)localized genres – are constituted and called into account by specters of (cinema) histories. Keywords Philippine cinema, Singapore cinema, transnational cinema, Asian horror, OFW film About the Author Patrick Campos is Assistant Professor at the University of the Philippines Film Institute. He is currently Director of the Office of Extension and External Relations of the College of Mass Communication, University of the Philippines, Diliman, where he previously served as College Secretary. UP Film Institute Filmography of Filipino Films 2003 Introduced by Lucenio Martin L. Lauzon Compiled by Virginia D. Cuyugan and Lucenio Martin L. Lauzon with assistance from Pol del Mundo of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) Ana Fajardo of the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) Edwin Joaquin of the MOWELFUND Film Institute The Filipino film celebrates this year its 85th anniversary but its activities and achievements through the years still need to be documented and assessed fully and systematically. Today, the country is still wanting not only in the capability to preserve its film heritage but also in the determined and sustained efforts to collect and preserve existing data on Filipino film for posterity. It does not help that the conservation of Filipino heritage, taxing and tedious as it is already, is appreciated by only a few individuals even within the industry. As an institution dedicated to the study of films, the UP Film Institute (UPFI) shall try to help in the task of gathering, classifying and disseminating data on the Filipino film. As part of its commitment to the public, the UPFI shall make these data available to everyone through the publication of a systematic and comprehensive listing of Filipino films, beginning with those produced in 2003. This year is most apropos as it was also in 2003 that the UPFI was formally established by virtue of the UP Board of Regents resolution. The UPFI realizes that such filmographies are indispensable for anyone who wants to gain an overview of the film landscape in the country and to make necessary, informed and authoritative observations on the state of the Filipino film industry.
