Campos / Ghostly Allegories 611 GHOSTLY ALLEGORIES: HAUNTING AS CONSTITUTION OF PHILIPPINE (TRANS) NATIONAL (CINEMA) HISTORY Patrick Campos University of the Philippines Film Institute [email protected] Abstract By reading through the con–texts of Yam Laranas’s The Echo (2008) and Kelvin Tong’s The Maid (2005), the essay considers three Filipino genres that ironically gathered momentum at the time of the Philippine film industry’s crisis and decline in the 1990s up to the 2000s – the historical drama, the OFW (overseas Filipino worker) film, and horror. In the process, the essay constitutes an alternative map of Philippine cinema premised on inter-national transactions across states and film industries, on the one hand, and on the nodal and spectral bodies of Filipinas that network these states and industries, on the other hand. Dwelling on multiform hauntings, it ultimately focuses on how nations/cinemas – through (de)localized genres – are constituted and called into account by specters of (cinema) histories. Keywords Philippine cinema, Singapore cinema, transnational cinema, Asian horror, OFW film About the Author Patrick Campos is Assistant Professor at the University of the Philippines Film Institute. He is currently Director of the Office of Extension and External Relations of the College of Mass Communication, University of the Philippines, Diliman, where he previously served as College Secretary. MARAWI ATTACKED Martial Law declared in Mindanao MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte on (MAY 23) Tuesday declared Martial Law in the entire island of Mindanao following attacks by the ISIS-inspired Maute group in the city of Marawi, cutting short his first state visit to Russia this week. “The President has called me and asked me to announce that as of 10 p.m. Manila time, he has already declared Martial Law for the entire island of Mindanao,” Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said in a press briefing in Mos- cow, Russia just before midnight on Tuesday PH time. “Deputy Executive Secretary Menardo Guevarra has clarified that this is possible given the existence of a rebellion in Mindanao based on Article VII, Section 18 of the Constitution. This is good for 60 days,” Abella added. Duterte will be leaving Moscow at around 12 midnight, cancelling his meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev as a result of this new devel- opment. “They understand that the presence of the President is essential in the Philippines. But I will be staying behind. The agreements will be signed,” Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano said. • 2004 01 Inside Pages
UP Film Institute Filmography of Filipino Films 2003 Introduced by Lucenio Martin L. Lauzon Compiled by Virginia D. Cuyugan and Lucenio Martin L. Lauzon with assistance from Pol del Mundo of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) Ana Fajardo of the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) Edwin Joaquin of the MOWELFUND Film Institute The Filipino film celebrates this year its 85th anniversary but its activities and achievements through the years still need to be documented and assessed fully and systematically. Today, the country is still wanting not only in the capability to preserve its film heritage but also in the determined and sustained efforts to collect and preserve existing data on Filipino film for posterity. It does not help that the conservation of Filipino heritage, taxing and tedious as it is already, is appreciated by only a few individuals even within the industry. As an institution dedicated to the study of films, the UP Film Institute (UPFI) shall try to help in the task of gathering, classifying and disseminating data on the Filipino film. As part of its commitment to the public, the UPFI shall make these data available to everyone through the publication of a systematic and comprehensive listing of Filipino films, beginning with those produced in 2003.
