INTRODUCTION This Cycling Directory provides a review and assessment of existing bicycle facilities in the Miami Valley Region and the organizations that help make the facilities possible. The directory defines various bicycle infrastructure types, including on- and off-street facilities. A discussion of the existing bikeway system follows with a review of facilities in each of the four counties in the Region. The directory takes a look at other bicycle infrastructure components, including signage, end-of-trip facilities, and multi-modal connections, and then briefly summarizes existing programmatic efforts to encourage bicycling. 1.2. EXISTING BIKEWAYS The following sections describe existing bikeways in the Miami Valley region, discussing statewide and regional bikeways followed by an overview of bikeways within each of the Counties in the Region. Shared use paths comprise the vast majority of the Region’s existing bikeway network. The Miami Valley benefits from a comprehensive and generally well-connected trail system that has developed over time. In response to the devastating 1913 floods, the Miami Conservancy District (MCD) was formed and charged with developing a flood control system. The flood control channels along the Great Miami River and other waterway corridors now carry an extensive trail system. In 1978, the first eight-mile trail loop was developed in downtown Dayton, and today, the area boasts over 200 miles of trails. 1.2.1.
