  • Fear of Deaf Cinema
    1 Fear of Deaf Cinema Alex Burns ([email protected]), 2010 [Note: Accepted for publication in M/C 13(3) (2010) but undelivered to publisher at final edit stage due to illness.] The French experimental film composer Michel Chion has proposed ‘deaf cinema’ as a new aesthetic framework to interpret film dialogue, multi-layered soundtracks and silence. This article suggests Chion’s aesthetic theory is fragmentary. Through a sampling of Hollywood films in different historical periods, the article explores the implications of Chion’s ‘deaf cinema’ versus Robert Bresson’s ‘tactics of silence’, for the boundaries of film soundtracks; aesthetic strategies of silence; the variations in silent, experimental, genre and contemporary films, and the absence of deaf filmmakers and perspectives. Film Studies scholars who use these aesthetic strategies to develop more emancipatory and inclusive frameworks, as demonstrated in the work of deaf filmmakers Samuel Dore and Robert Hoskin. “Against the tactics of speed, of noise, set tactics of slowness, of silence.” ‐ Robert Bresson (Bennett, Hickmann and Wall, 15) Defining Deaf Cinema Michel Chion (www.michelchion.com) the French experimental music composer has proposed ‘deaf cinema’ as a new aesthetic framework to interpret film dialogue, multi-layered soundtracks, and silence. “The silent film may be called deaf,” Chion observes, “insofar as it prevented us from hearing the real sounds of the story. It had no ears for the immediate aural space, the here and now of action.” (Chion 7). As a past assistant to ‘musique concrete’ composer Pierre Schaeffer, Chion is sensitive to how inductive theories can shape how we perceive film and music.

This thesis seeks to explore the way in which invisibility as a concept becomes explicitly housed within digital compositing, visual effects (VFX) and certain attendant techniques. The chapters will establish how compositing and effects techniques can be seen as pushing modern filmmaking into concealing, and therefore visually releasing, certain physical structures within films’ images and their production. This shall be achieved by drawing upon a combination of texts that disseminate the technical nature and make-up of VFX, alongside discussion and theorisation of their use within cinema, together with other established film theory. I will examine cases of VFX techniques within cinema that can be used to investigate how their construction and utilisation create invisibility to accommodate and nullify the profilmic elements captured through the camera and aspects of technology. The chapters begin by examining how the work of Georges Méliès, whose films use the concept of invisibility to promote a breakdown of temporal and spatial qualities, become redeployed in certain modern digital effects-based films.

    Letter from the Chair Welcome! We are now celebrating LTU&E’s twenty-eighth year. It’s exciting to participate in an event that has created a legacy. This symposium has been around for almost three decades and thanks to your continued interest, we will keep moving ahead. This symposium, however, would not be happening without the combined effort of several people. First of all, we would like to thank the Theatre and Media Arts Department at BYU for their continued support and sponsorship. Our gratitude also goes out to our donors who helped fund this event; we appreciate your generosity. Special thanks go to Nathan Hale for an outstanding poster and to Steve Keele for the beautiful program book cover artwork, both of whom stepped up when James C. Christensen had to cancel his appearance for health reasons. Thanks also go out to the individuals who helped organized this year’s symposium. Lastly, we would like to thank everyone who has attended and continues to support LTU&E. As always, we hope you enjoy yourselves. These symposia are designed to achieve several things. We discuss science fiction and fantasy on an academic/intellectual basis because it truly is a lit- erary medium that provokes thought. The symposium also helps provide knowledge for fledgling writers so that their horizons can be expanded. One of the most rewarding purposes is the sense of community it creates. Life, the Universe, & Everything provides the opportunity for people of common interests to come together.
