Walter Latham Biography
Walter Latham Often referred to as "The King of Comedy,” Walter Latham is grateful for the humble upbringing and everyday challenges that shaped his early life, and instilled in him a fierce passion that led to his success as a business mogul and humanitarian. Born to a single mother in East New York, Brooklyn, Latham soon found himself in a similar situation, becoming a father at the young age of 18, and struggling to get by with odd jobs and a brief stint in the United States Air Force. At 20, he caught a break with a permanent position at the American Express Call Center in Greensboro, NC and was thrilled to finally provide healthcare for his son, even though he knew he was bound for something greater. Inspiration soon struck Latham, after attending a performance by his childhood friend, MC Lyte, when he realized his calling was to produce concerts. He borrowed money from his mother and produced his first concert in a nightclub. The headline act didn’t show and Latham had to refund the patrons their money but what he learned from this unfortunate experience would change his path forever. Latham decided to produce more concerts but mitigate his losses by soliciting sponsorships. He wrote and mailed 50 letters to various corporations about promoting a southeast tour with the hottest comedians. When Coors Brewing Company expressed interest, Latham soon found himself, at age 21, standing in a boardroom of top executives pitching his comedy idea. His first comedy tour featured Chris Tucker and Bill Bellamy and Coors was so impressed they asked Latham to do another. -

CPYU Trend Alert: TV for Tweens by Chris Wagner Television programs produced specifically for the tween demographic are taking off. Cable television is beginning to find a niche among tween viewers by focusing on live-action shows. Evidence of this can be seen in the recent success of Disney’s High School Musical franchise and Hannah Montana , as well as Nickelodeon’s Drake & Josh and The Naked Brothers Band . Tweens, of course, have always watched television. However back in the late 1990’s, a gradual shift began occurring among broadcast networks that largely neglected this age group. Dan Schneider, creator of past and present Nickelodeon hits such as Zoey 101 and The Amanda Show says that networks used to air family shows during primetime hours. As of recent years, these time slots have become edgier and racier and as a result, young children and tweens (with diligent parents) were left to view shows elsewhere. Because cable channels had been marketing shows to tweens for many years already, they were primed and ready to step in and fill the programming void. Tweens are in a stage of their lives where they’re no longer beginning to think of themselves as kids. They have not reached full-fledged adolescence, yet are beginning to test their independence and find their individuality. Gary Marsh, the Disney Channel’s president for entertainment says, “[Tweens] are trapped between the cocoon and comfort of being a child, and the rebellion and independence they want as a teenager. So your goal is trying to satisfy all those needs that kids have.” Though differing opinions exist, cable companies generally categorize the tween demographic as being between 9 and 14 years old. -

Acting in the Academy
Acting in the Academy There are over 150 BFA and MFA acting programs in the US today, nearly all of which claim to prepare students for theatre careers. Peter Zazzali contends that these curricula represent an ethos that is outdated and limited given today’s shrinking job market for stage actors. Acting in the Academy traces the history of actor training in universities to make the case for a move beyond standard courses in voice and speech, move- ment, or performance, to develop an entrepreneurial model that motivates and encourages students to create their own employment opportunities. This book answers questions such as: • How has the League of Professional Theatre Training Programs shaped actor training in the US? • How have training programs and the acting profession developed in relation to one another? • What impact have these developments had on American acting as an art form? Acting in the Academy calls for a reconceptualization of actor training in the US, and looks to newly empower students of performance with a fresh, original perspective on their professional development. LAGFF welcomes the Athens International Culinary Film Festival (AICFF) and Gastronomy Days in the heart of Hollywood. On its 10th anniversary, the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival (LAGFF) offers a special thematic tribute to culinary Greek cinema at the Egyptian Theatre on June 1-5, 2016 “Reason to”, the company for “Gastronomy Days” and the AICFF, in collaboration with LAGFF, and with the support of the Greek National Tourist Organization (EOT), will be presenting to the American public, the Greek-American community of Southern California and to US media representatives a selective program of culinary events. To launch this inaugural collaboration, we are offering a cinematic three-course meal: We begin with hors d’oeuvres on Thursday, June 2nd at 4pm, screening seven animation and experimental shorts: For our main course, we will be screening Tassos’ Boulmetis acclaimed feature Touch of Spice on Saturday, June 4th at noon. For our dessert, we are offering Angelos Abatzoglou, Mustafa's Sweet Dreams on Sunday, June 5th at noon. The screening program is complemented by a live cooking show and tastings on Saturday, June 4th, 7:00-8:00pm, and a gastronomy panel discussion on Sunday June 5th at 1:30pm. In Spring 2016, 16 students of Loyola Marymount University interned with the Los Angeles Greek Film festival as part of a course taught by Dr. Zacharia, LMU Professor of Classics and LAGFF Director of Education and Culture. The course activities included research projects on Greek cinema, gastronomy and culture. According to “Reason to” President John Gourtzelas, and AICFF/Gastronomy Days Artistic Director at the 2016 LAGFF Takis Panagiotopoulos, “this initiative, which has already received the enthusiastic support by the public and culinary experts, is the first step for a more systematic presence and promotion of contemporary Greek gastronomy on the west coast of the United States”.
