  • Walter Latham Biography
Walter Latham Often referred to as "The King of Comedy,” Walter Latham is grateful for the humble upbringing and everyday challenges that shaped his early life, and instilled in him a fierce passion that led to his success as a business mogul and humanitarian. Born to a single mother in East New York, Brooklyn, Latham soon found himself in a similar situation, becoming a father at the young age of 18, and struggling to get by with odd jobs and a brief stint in the United States Air Force. At 20, he caught a break with a permanent position at the American Express Call Center in Greensboro, NC and was thrilled to finally provide healthcare for his son, even though he knew he was bound for something greater. Inspiration soon struck Latham, after attending a performance by his childhood friend, MC Lyte, when he realized his calling was to produce concerts. He borrowed money from his mother and produced his first concert in a nightclub. The headline act didn’t show and Latham had to refund the patrons their money but what he learned from this unfortunate experience would change his path forever. Latham decided to produce more concerts but mitigate his losses by soliciting sponsorships. He wrote and mailed 50 letters to various corporations about promoting a southeast tour with the hottest comedians. When Coors Brewing Company expressed interest, Latham soon found himself, at age 21, standing in a boardroom of top executives pitching his comedy idea. His first comedy tour featured Chris Tucker and Bill Bellamy and Coors was so impressed they asked Latham to do another.

  • Actors Stories Are a SAG Awards® Tradition
Actors Stories are a SAG Awards® Tradition When the first Screen Actors Guild Awards® were presented on March 8, 1995, the ceremony opened with a speech by Angela Lansbury introducing the concept behind the SAG Awards and the Actor® statuette, along with giving a little of her own history as a performer: "I've been Elizabeth Taylor's sister, Spencer Tracy's mistress, Elvis' mother and a singing teapot." She ended by telling the assembled audience of SAG Awards nominees and presenters, "Tonight is dedicated to the art and craft of acting by the people who should know about it: actors. And remember, you're one too!" Thus began a tradition of the Screen Actors Guild Awards opening with a distinguished actor telling the audience a bit about his/her perceptions of their craft or some brief biographical anecdote. For the first eight years of the SAG Awards, that tradition was carried on by a single actor each year, with Michael Keaton, Dennis Hopper, John Lithgow, Kathy Bates, Whoopi Goldberg, James Woods and Sir Ian McKellen following chronologically in Lansbury's footsteps. The concept was so well received that for the 9th Annual SAG Awards, supervising producer Gloria Fujita O'Brien suggested a new twist on the tradition. By having actors tell shorter stories, it would allow room for actors of all ages and backgrounds to tell tales with many different emotional tones. To make it even more fun for the audience, the producers decided to keep the identities of those storytellers secret until they popped up on camera. Since the 9th SAG Awards

  • Actors Stories Transcriptions 1St Annual SAG Awards 3/08/95
Actors Stories Transcriptions 1st Annual SAG Awards 3/08/95 – Angela Lansbury Hello, my name is Angela Lansbury. We are here this evening to honor our fellow performers in film and TV with an award simply called The Actor™. I know a little bit about the subject. I’ve been Elizabeth Taylor’s sister, Spencer Tracy’s mistress, Elvis’s mother and a singing teapot. Let’s face it, at one time or another everyone loves the opportunity to act. No matter what we do, I guess we’re all actors at heart. I mean just watch a child play “let’s pretend”. I mean actors are simply those people who have turned this impulse into a life’s work. So tonight is dedicated to the art and craft of acting by the people who should know about it: actors. And remember, you’re one too! 2nd Annual SAG Awards 2/26/96 – Michael Keaton My name is Michael Keaton, and I’m an actor. Thank you. I’m honored and I’m proud to have been asked to open tonight’s ceremony. Being an actor is the work we’ve chosen. I feel what I do for a living makes me no better, no worse, no more important, no less important than millions of other hard working men and women. It’s a craft that carries with it, I think, a responsibility of making people think; maybe making people feel something. And I think hopefully, altering the course of things for the better. A responsibility not to be taken lightly.

  • The Impact of Comedy on Racial and Ethnic Discourse
The Impact of Comedy on Racial and Ethnic Discourse May 2012 A thesis submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts In the Department of Sociology Of the College of Arts and Sciences by Aaryn L. Green B.A., University of Cincinnati 2009 Committee: Annulla Linders, Ph.D. (Chair) Jennifer Malat, Ph.D. Omotayo Banjo, Ph.D. Abstract An overwhelming facet of race literature suggests that American society has entered an era of colorblindness; where instead of perpetuating racist ideology through blatant discriminatory legislation, racial differences are either understated or ignored entirely. These new racial processes are reflected in the policies of major social institutions, but also within popular culture. Yet, as made evident by the success of comedians such as Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle, stand-up comedy challenges acceptable racial discourse; placing race in the forefront. Comedy persists as a facet of popular culture where racial difference is made apparent, yet ironically the art of comedy is usually overlooked by sociologists. What is lacking in the humor research is an understanding of how comedy creates an environment where race can be spoken about directly, and often times harshly. Through the analysis of focus groups, the present study finds evidence to suggest that racial and ethnic comedy serves to both reinforce and wane racial and ethnic stereotypes, similarities, and differences. After watching stand-up comedy clips of popular comedians, black and white respondents show both agreement and disagreement on: (1) the offensiveness of ethnic comedy (2) stereotypes and perceived truths and (3) the utility of ethnic comedy in everyday interactions.

Fall 2020 RTF 359S: Black Television Comedy-WB Course Instructor: Adrien Sebro Email: [email protected] Seminar Day and Time: Tuesday and Thursday 9:30AM-11:00AM Office Hours: Tuesday 12:00PM-1PM or by appointment Teaching Assistant: Email: Office Hours: By appointment Course Description: For cultural critics to ignore television’s potential as a Forum of resistance is to misread levels of vernacular meaning inherent in many Black television texts. Often viewed as a medium of bufFoonery or harsh stereotyping, situational comedies that Focus on Black communities have in fact had a crucial role in political progress, activism, and evolving social conditions in the United States. With close attention to themes such as socioeconomics, gender, religion, and politics, Black sitcoms address American social injustices in ways that other sitcoms simply are unable to. This course will chronicle a history of American Black sitcoms over time, that worked to respond to their political moment and have radically transFormed television as a space For pedagogy. It is important to mention, that this course’s Focus on the sitcom genre is deliberate. The sitcom can be read to help lay bare the mores, images, ideals, prejudices, and ideologies in its topical moment. There is much history that can and must be captured From the sitcom. As Darrell Hamamoto states, “the study of the television situation comedy is an exercise in examining the relationship of popular art to its historically speciFic setting.” Surveying histories of television sitcoms in general ofFers a unique history of what is understood as national American humor. American humor in general, and Black humor speciFically, began as a “wrested Freedom,” the Freedom to laugh at that which was unjust and cruel in order to create distance From what would otherwise obliterate a sense of selF and community.
