2019 ATCO MAJOR PROJECTS INFORMATION Natural Gas System Improvements Calgary Dear Councillor, We value our long-standing partnership with the City of Calgary delivering safe, reliable natural gas service to homes and businesses and are pleased to provide you with an update on the major projects that will be underway in the City this year. Natural Gas System Improvements We have compiled all projects into maps of each ward and the City, an outline of the work that will take place in each ward, and further details you may use to update your constituents. This information will also be shared on our website at ATCO.com/NGConstruction. As with all our projects, we continue to work with City departments to ensure a coordinated effort to help minimize any service and traffic disruptions or inconvenience that this necessary work may cause. We also provide information and timelines to customers who are directly impacted by our work and communities we are working in and the City’s 311 department so inquiries from the public can be addressed in a timely fashion. To maintain our high level of safety, service and reliability, we will continue to invest in improving and growing our natural gas system, including an ongoing focus on our Meter Relocation and Replacement Program in Calgary. If you have any questions or would like to meet again to learn more about our system improvements or any other matters, please contact me. Sincerely, Ryan Germaine Vice President, Calgary Region Operations Gas Distribution ATCO Pipelines & Liquids Global Business Unit 403-245-7749 What You Can Expect • Coordination of projects with City departments to minimize any impact to residents and businesses in your area. • Residents and businesses will be notified in advance if they will be directly impacted by our projects. We are committed to ensuring any concerns are addressed. • Our construction will sometimes consist of digging along roadways, yards, back alleys or within the Transportation Utility Corridor (TUC), this may result in noise during the day. • Construction may disrupt the normal flow of traffic or parking. We will communicate where these disruptions occur. • We will use trenchless technology like Horizontal Direction Drilling (HDD) to install pipelines under roadways or watercourses where it is necessary. • We will work safely and responsibly in your neighbourhoods. We will also make every effort to restore property to its original condition. For more information, please visit our projects page on ATCO.com/NGConstruction or call us toll-free at 310-5678. Natural Gas System Improvements Sometimes residents will see us in their neighbourhoods or within the Transportation Utility Corridor (TUC) completing work to upgrade the natural gas system. This work can be messy and loud, but once we are done we will put things back the way we found them. When we are working in your neighbourhoods it could be part of our Steel Mains Replacement (SMR), our Plastic Mains Replacement (PMR), or sometimes we are helping other major projects and moving our lines out of the way. If by chance you do see us working near the ring road, also known as the TUC, we are likely out doing some work on the Urban Pipeline Replacement (UPR) Program. If your residents do see our workers or contractors, they are probably replacing old distribution pipelines with new pipelines for continued safe and reliable service for our customers. If they have more questions about our work, they can visit ATCO.com/NGConstruction or they can call our Customer Assistance Centre at 310-5678. Glossary Abandonment When a pipeline is taken out of commission and removed from service. We will leave the pipe in the ground, but it is disconnected and there will no longer be natural gas in the line. Transfer A natural gas pipeline will be transferred from high-pressure to low-pressure. It will no longer be a transmission line and will become part of the distribution system. Bell hole Is created when we cut away the earth and form a safe digging area for our crews to work on the pipes. Bell holes are fenced at night for safety. Tie-in This occurs when we connect two pipes together, it will require a bell hole. Feeder A low to intermediate pressure pipeline that would tie into the distribution system. It typically takes natural gas from a station to a neighbourhood. TUC Transportation Utilities Corridor. Designated land in Edmonton and Calgary for ring road systems, pipelines, major power lines and linear municipal utilities. SMR Steel Mains Replacement. Mainly in urban areas, we are upgrading existing steel natural gas pipelines in neighbourhoods to plastic pipelines. PMR Plastic Mains Replacement. Mainly in rural areas, this program is replacing the current plastic pipe with a more cost effective, longer lasting polyethylene pipeline. UPR Urban Pipeline Replacement Program. This program is to replace and relocate aging high-pressure pipelines in Calgary and Edmonton into the TUC. The existing pipelines will either be removed from service or transferred to a much lower pressure for the distribution system. 2019 Planned Work by Ward (City of Calgary) Ward Project Name Location Timeline Impacts Ward 1 Haskayne/Rowan Park Along Tuscany Hill Drive Q2 • Construction noise Feeder Extension from Tuscany Estates 5 weeks • Drilling under pathway will require Drive NW to Nose Hill pedestrian walkway closures Drive NW • Temporary lane and parking closures West Calgary Ring West side of Q3 2019 • Noise - 24/7 in some locations Road - Pipeline Relocations Transportation Utility - from directional drill Corridor - From Q4 2020 • Potential dust Bow River to Old Banff Coach Road • Increase in construction traffic Ward 2 Arbour Crest Drive Arbour Crest Drive NW TBD • Construction noise Feeder - UPR (Q3/Q4) • Temporary lane and parking closures Ward 3 No Major Projects Scheduled Ward 4 No Major Projects Scheduled Ward 5 84 Avenue NE - PMR Intersection of Métis Q3 2019 • Construction noise Trail and 84 Avenue NE • Potential dust • Temporary lane and parking closures Ward 6 Aspen Woods Intersection of 69 Street Begin Q1 to be • Construction noise 69 Street - PMR and 14 Avenue SW complete by • Potential dust end of Q3 • Increase in construction traffic in the area, but no road closures or interruptions to roadways Ward Project Name Location Timeline Impacts Ward 7 Crowchild Pipeline Relocation Along Crowchild and Q1 - Q2 • Temporary lane and parking closures 24 Street from 1 month • Night and weekend work may be 16 to 23 Avenue NW required due to Crowchild traffic volume 6 Avenue 6 Avenue NW in laneway Q2 • Temporary lane and parking closures Valve Replacement between 14 and 15 Street NW 3 weeks 16 Avenue N Station 1 Along the southbound lanes Q3 • Temporary lane and parking closures Green Line Relocation of Centre Street N between 1 month 16 and 13 Avenue 16 Avenue N Station 2 Along 15 Avenue NW Q3 • Temporary lane and parking closures Green Line Relocation between Centre Street N 1 month and 1 Street NW 16 Avenue N Station 3 Along Centre Street N Q3 • Temporary lane and parking closures Green Line Relocation between 16 and 17 Avenue NW 2 weeks 7 Avenue SW Station In the intersection of 6 Q3 • Temporary lane and parking closures Green Line Relocation Avenue SW and 2 Street SW 3 weeks 2 Avenue SW Station 1 In the intersection of 2 Q3 • Temporary lane and parking closures Green Line Relocation Street SW and 3 Avenue SW 1 month 2 Avenue SW Station 2 Along 2 Street SW Q3 • Temporary lane and parking closures Green Line Relocation between 2 Avenue SW 2 months and Eau Clair Avenue SW Sunnyside Valve Replacement In the alley between 10 Street Q3 • Temporary lane and parking closures and 9A Street NW and north 1 month • Dust of 2 Avenue NW • Construction noise Sunnyside Lift 3 Street NW south of Q3 • Temporary lane and parking closures Station Extension 6 Street NW 1 month Ward Project Name Location Timeline Impacts Ward 8 9 Avenue and 9 Street SW Q1 - Q2 • Temporary lane and parking closures BRT Relocation 1 month • Night and weekend construction may be required, as road may need to be cut open Ward 9 Highfield Road - SMR Near the intersection of Q2 • Temporary lane and parking closures Highfield Road and 2 months • Dust 4 Street SE • Construction noise Mills Estate On 15 Street SE at the Q2 • Temporary lane and parking closures Valve Replacement corner of 19 Avenue SE 3 Weeks Acadia Valve Replacement In the alley behind Q2 • Temporary lane and parking closures 367 Acadia Drive SE 3 Weeks • Dust • Construction noise Abandonment Chestermere Northeast corner of Q2 - Q3 • Construction noise Lake Pipeline - UPR 68 Avenue and 52 Street SE Abandonment Chestermere North of 68 Avenue SE Q2 - Q3 • Construction noise Lake Pipeline - UPR west of Stoney Trail Pipeline Removal, Portion Along 68 Avenue SE, Q2 - Q3 • Construction noise of Chestermere Lake between 57 and 68 Street SE Pipeline - UPR Adelaide Street SE Green Along 8 Street SE Q3 • Temporary lane and parking closures Line Relocation between 9 Avenue and 2 months • Increase in noise levels/vibration Adelaide Street SE during day due to drilling 68 Street SE Feeder 68 Street SE between Q2 • Lane closure 14 and 16 Avenue SE 3 weeks • Construction noise • Bus stop relocation • Sidewalk closure Macleod Trail S Feeder Along Macleod Trail, Q2 • Temporary lane and parking closures North of 78 Ave SW 1 month • Construction noise • Increase in construction traffic • Potential sidewalk closure Ward Project Name Location Timeline Impacts Ward 10 Temple Valve Replacement In the alley behind Q3
