Former Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, Govt. India Environmental Science Conference Hall, Savitribai Phule Pune University Campus, Pune - 411007 @ 4:00 pm on Friday, 27th September 2019 Abstract India's energy consumption would need to grow around 4-5 times, keeping in line with her developmental aspirations and the strong correlation between human development index and per capita energy consumption. There are serious issues related to energy security and sustainability, balance of payments as well as climate change with the energy resources that are in current use. There is thus a need to look at new energy paradigms. Luckily, our domestic energy resource profile is consistent with our needs and we can secure India's energy future if only we develop relevant technologies without waiting for others to develop them. The lecture will discuss these aspects in broad terms. About the speaker Padma Vibhushan Dr. Anil Kakodkar (born on 11th November, 1943) joined the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in 1964, following the one year post graduate Training with top rank in Nuclear Science and Technology in the then Atomic Energy Establishment. He became the Director of BARC in the year 1996 and was the Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Atomic Energy, during the years 2000 -2009. He was DAE Homi Bhabha Chair Professor during Jan. 2010-Jan. 2015 and INAE Satish Dhawan Chair of Engineering Eminence during Jan. 2015 to Jan. 2017. Dr. Kakodkar presently devotes his time primarily on issues related to energy, education and societal development. He has been propagating the concept of CILLAGE, a knowledge based ecosystem for bridging city and village gaps for technology enabledsustainable development in rural areas. .

GOVERNANCE AWARDS 2015 28-11-2015 LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Dr. Anil Kakodkar, Nuclear scientist For distinguished service in the field of nuclear science, with massive contribution for the advancement of the science and India’s nuclear energy programme Orn on november 11, 1943 in Barawani village of Madhya Pradesh, Dr. Anil Ka- kodkar graduated from VJTI, Bombay university, with a degree in Mechanical en- gineering in 1963 and did M.Sc. in experimental Stress Analysis from nottingham Buniversity in 1969. he joined the Bhabha Atomic research Centre (BArC) in 1964 and became its director in 1996. he was the Chairman, Atomic energy Commission, and Secretary to the Govern- ment of India, Department of Atomic energy, during 2000-09.he was DAe homi Bhabha Chair Professor at BArC during 2010-15. In the reactor engineering Division of BArC he played a key role in design and construction of the Dhruva reactor, a completely original high-tech project. he was in the core team of architects of India’s peaceful nuclear tests in 1974 and 1998. Further, he led the indigenous development of India’s pressurised heavy water reactor technology and rehabilitated two reactors at Kalpakkam and the first unit at rawatbhatta. A strong advocate of India’s self-reliance, Dr. Kakodkar led with dedication the pursuit of utilising thorium as a fuel for nuclear energy and development of national capability in all aspects of atomic energy for which he built competent teams of highly specialised scientists and engineers. Currently, he engages in designing the Advanced heavy Water reactor, which uses thorium-uranium 233 as the primary energy source with plutonium as the driver fuel.

My name is Reeves Yanez and I will be the coordinating crisis director. I am a Junior at William & Mary majoring in Kinesiology with a concentration in Public Health. I have done MUN since middle school and since I have become increasingly involved, competing as part of W&M’s travel team, staffing our conferences, and serving as the USG for specialized agencies and Director General for our middle school conference, WMIDMUN. Outside of MUN, I love to spend time outside, leading students on backpacking trips through the student rec center. I am beyond excited to see what you all bring to the table as we discuss such an exciting topic with so many possibilities. I would encourage you to use history as a guide as you change the future of the subcontinent, but don’t be constrained by it.. The historical outcome was not perfect and I look forward to the alternate solutions you put forward. I especially value creativity and novel solutions, and plans that account for contingencies will be the most successful. With that being said there may be some sensitive subjects covered in this committee and we have high expectations of delegate conduct. We will not tolerate any racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, or any other form of discrimination. I look forward to your exciting plans as you strive to lead your nation to victory. The National Academy of Sciences, India (Nasi) (The Oldest Science Academy of India)
The NaTioNal academy of ScieNceS, iNdia (NaSi) (The Oldest Science Academy of India) (1) Need to set up the Institution? or the need that the Institution fulfils with regard to scientific inquiry? The 1st World War and the world-wide economic depression caused a setback to scientific research globally - much more so in India whose scientists found it difficult even to publish their research work since they had to be almost entirely dependent on foreign journals. The post-World War India also saw the rise of the freedom movement which incidentally also drew attention to the numerous problems of the Indian people like poverty, hunger, diseases, recurrent floods, droughts, famines etc. Patriotic scientists felt deeply concerned with these. It was in this background that the idea of establishing a forum for scientists, which would bring them together to discuss and find scientific solutions to the problems of the country, was mooted by Prof. Meghnad Saha, a great scientist, patriot and then Professor of Physics at Allahabad University in 1929. His views were published in December 1929 issue of the Allahabad University magazine in an article entitled 'A Plea for an Academy of Sciences'. Thus, the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) was founded in the year 1930, with the objectives to provide a national forum for the publication of research work carried out by Indian scientists and to provide opportunities for exchange of views among them. Further, the large base of its esteemed Fellows & Members made the Academy capable of generating ideas/views etc. on several important socio-scientific issues; and the Academy’s role was recognized as a ‘Think Tank’ by many, including the government after independence.
