ABSTRACT We Describe a New Species Of Volume 54(5):51‑62, 2014 Aceito em: 08/01/2014 Publicado em: 31/03/2014 NUEVA ESPECIE DE RANA DEL GÉNERO PRISTIMANTIS DEL GRUPO LACRIMOSUS (AMPHIBIA: CRAUGASTORIDAE) DEL PARQUE NACIONAL SANGAY, ECUADOR DIEGO BATALLAS R.1,2,3 JORGE BRITO M.1,2,4 ABSTRACT We describe a new species of terrestrial frog of the genus Pristimantis of medium-size (the SVL of males from 22.18 to 25.13 mm) found in the cloud forests of the eastern foothills of the Sangay National Park, located in the mid-eastern region of Ecuador at an elevation of 2750 meters. We assign the new species Pristimantis latericius sp. nov., to the Pristimantis lacrimosus group, differentiating it from the rest of the members of this group for having prominent tubercles on the upper eyelid and red-orange coloration on its dorsum. Calls are short, one-note, with two harmonic bands. In the last few years in the Sangay National Park, important faunal developments have been made. However further studies are necessary to help document the ecology and natural history of the amphibians, as they will help to understand ecological processes. The discovery of this and other new species in this region demonstrates its biological importance, validating the development of conservation plans in this important World Heritage Site. The revised P. leptolophus group is composed of nine named species and six unnamed species. The Pristimantis lacrimosus species group, with 24 species distributed in the Neotropics, is a group of arbo- real frogs commonly inhabiting bromeliads. Previous studies have claimed the group to be monophyletic but few spe- cies have been included in phylogenetic analyses. In this paper, we included five additional species from the northern Andes in Colombia and tested the monophyly of this phenetic group using genetic data under a Bayesian approach. Our results show that the P. lacrimosus group represents two distant and unrelated clades. Clade “A” is endemic to Colombia while Clade “B” encompasses species distributed in Central America, Ecuador and Peru. For the first time, we reveal the phylogenetic position of P. boulengeri and a new species is described. The new taxon is most closely related to P. brevifrons from southwestern Colombia with a genetic distance of 4.3% for 16S and 10.6% for COI. Our results suggest, one more time, that morphological similarity among species in the most diverse vertebrate genus not necessarily agree with its evolutionary history and that more effort in alpha taxonomy needs to be done in order to understand the tremendous radiation of this lineage in the Neotropics.

We describe a new Pristimantis from the valley of Mindo in the Pacific slopes of the Andes in northwestern Ecuador at elevations between 1243–1790 m. The species is assigned to the Pristimantis lacrimosus group, from whose members it differs by lacking a rostral papilla, having unique coloration features and smooth to weakly areolate ventral skin texture. Also, females of the new species are notably larger (SVL 40.0–40.8 mm) than females of the other members of the group. Calls of the new species are emitted constantly at about every two seconds. Each call is com- posed of a pulsed, frequency-modulated note, with a dominant frequency that peaks at 2698–2919 Hz. Comparisons of an 816 bp fragment of the 16s mitochondrial gene between the new species and the closest morphological species, Pristimantis subsigillatus, shows a genetic distance of 9.6–9.7%, providing independent evidence of the validity of the species. Introduction. The diversity of Pristimantis, currently with 454 species1, is far from being totally known. More than one hundred species of this genus have been described in the past 13 years and there is no rea- son to think that the description rate will slow down, especially with the advent of molecular techniques, which have facilitated the discovery of cryptic diversity2–5.

As a result of its striking diversity, tax- onomic reviews remain a challenge. Herein, we present an updated phylogeny of the Pristimantis lacrimosus group and describe a new species from Llanganates and Sangay National Parks. We also report, for the first time, the phylogenetic position ofPristimantis degener, P. eugeniae, P. katoptroides, and P. petersi. Based on our phylogeny, we add two species to the Pristimantis lacrimosus group. Through the integration of molecular and bioacoustic evidence, we describe a new species which was hidden under “Pris- timantis petersi”. Pristimantis petersioides sp. nov. is most closely related to Pristimantis petersi and an undescribed species from Peru. It can be distinguished from P. petersi by its advertisement call and large genetic differences (uncorrected p-genetic distances 7.9% to 8.4% for gene 16S). Moreover, the new species and P. petersi are not sister species. We suggest assigning the new species to the Endangered Red List category because it has a small distribution range with deforestation as result of agriculture and other anthropogenic influences.
