Abstract: Superstar as a term is synonymous with Bollywood. The glamorous world of Bollywood has witnessed the rise of several stars, making a mark with their talent, charm and charisma. While some manage to swoon the audience over their looks, there are some who sweep them off their feet and are tagged as the Superstars of Bollywood! From Dilip Kumar to Shah Rukh Khan, B-town has many names in this list of superstars. But lately, we only have stars. The culture of superstar has become redundant. Reason? May be the advent of social media. With easy accessibility and direct contact with a star over social media has brought down the curiosity that once existed around the film stars. The kind of stardom that has been enjoyed by the likes of Rajesh Khanna, Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn, is missing with the actors of the newer generation. Keeping this is in mind lets delve deeper into what the actual scenario is like. India is one of the hot favourite teams of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 and everyone is keeping an eye on Men In Blue's performance in the tournament. Since the last two world cups, the Indian cricket team has always been favourite of all sports lovers. Hence, the craze to watch India's world cup match is on another level. On the other hand, as per past records, Bollywood has witnessed tough time during world cup tournament as many films didn't manage to perform well at the box office. In 2011, when ICC Cricket World Cup took place in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, films like F.A.L.T.U produced by Vashu Bhagnani, Abhishek Bachchan starrer Game, Priyanka Chopra's 7 Khoon Maaf failed miserably at the box-office. The theme of this year’s report, ‘Rise of the Millennials’, recognizes the ascent of millennial celebrity endorsers to the top of our brand value rankings. India currently has a millennial population of around 400 million and is expected to become the youngest country in the world by 2020 with a median age of 29. India’s millennial population is experiencing high growth in disposable income levels and thus, it is increasingly becoming crucial for companies to add endorsers who can influence this segment of the population. Varun Gupta Managing Director For the first time since inception of our rankings, Shah Rukh Khan has slipped from Duff & Phelps India the number one rank, replaced by Virat Kohli, who has become the primary choice of product brands to engage and attract consumers. • Nepotism in Film Industry: an Unending Debate
ISSN 2455-4782 NEPOTISM IN FILM INDUSTRY: AN UNENDING DEBATE Authored by: Dr. Deepti Kohli * * Associate Professor, Vivekananda Institute of Professional Studies, Delhi ______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT Nepotism is not a new issue in the society. It revives itself with the growth of film industry. It can be seen in politics as well. In the film industry it can be seen at the level of production, distribution, marketing etc. The disadvantage of it is that, it eliminates the talent and hard work from the work culture. It removes incentives for creativity. It has been seen as a boon for the star kids and bane for the struggling artists. Recently the death of the 34 year old actor has ignited the debate of nepotism through the social media activists. The paper attempts to study as to how far film industry has been the victim of nepotism and the loss suffered due to it. The paper also analyses the possible legal solutions to the problem of nepotism. Key words- Nepotism, film industry, star kids, film collection, production house, directors 14 | P a g e JOURNAL ON CONTEMPORARY ISSUES OF LAW [JCIL] VOLUME 6 ISSUE 6 ISSN 2455-4782 INTRODUCTION When professional decisions are hampered on the basis of personal relationships, nepotism can be said to have begun. The strong argument in its support is that when families run businesses, as a tradition, they want to carry it from generations to generations, and keep the profit in home which can be inherited by the family members alone. The term nepotism has been derived from Italian word nepotismo, which is based on Latin root nepos, which means nephew.1 There are various areas where nepotism exists, however, in this paper the nepotism is discussed in the light of film industry, commonly known as ‘Bollywood’.

Nevertheless, domestic demand for films appears to be waning as in a number of developed countries with mature film industries. Hence, the econometric analysis in this paper is particularly timely as with demand for films in Indian cinemas falling it is important to identify those factors that make films appealing for Indian audiences. An original dataset is utilised that includes data on all Bollywood films released in India between 2011 and 2015. Account is taken of the potential endogeneity between variables through the use of the Generalised Method of Moments approach. Results are used to demonstrate how the Indian film market can continue to have a significant positive impact on the Indian economy. The discussion highlights appropriate film production company strategies and Government policy responses that should be considered to ensure the continued success of the Indian film industry both domestically and in an increasingly competitive international market.
