  • Album Review
Undermind PHISH, 2004 Elektra 62969-2 Phish called it quits in the summer of 2004, disappointing legions of their ‘‘phans’’ with a decision that was ultimately an interesting exercise in artistic integrity. Put succinctly, they were not feeling it any more. Three-quarters of the band felt that they had run their course; that they had had a great ride—one marked by phenomenal successes, most of which were hardly noticed by mainstream media and culture—but knew or felt, somehow, that enough was enough. No acrimonious fights and no bitter rifts. They wanted, quite simply, to go out on top. Chief among their concerns was a fear of becoming a nostalgia act, of turning into caricatures, of rehashing themselves and their songs beyond the point of healthy return. It was a fascinating decision by a fascinating band. The band built up a loyal and dedicated following due, in large part, to the nature of their concerts. Both set lists and song duration were ever changing. The band fashioned a sound that drew from a wide array of influences and musical styles or genres, evident not only in their own songs, but in their choice of cover material (one of a few key elements of the Phish experience). As with 1960s icons the Grateful Dead (a facile and often misguided comparison), no two Phish performances were ever alike. And it was this element of surprise and discovery that kept phans positively hooked. Followers of Phish formed and maintained a bona fide, full-blown (sub)culture and they provide a rich and fascinating case study indeed.

Tucker Date approved: April 18, 2011 iii Abstract ―Understanding It: Affective Authenticity, Space, and the Phish Scene‖ is an ethnographic study of ―scene identity‖ around the contemporary rock band Phish. Utilizing data generated from six years of ethnographic fieldwork, including over one hundred and fifty interviews with Phish scene participants, this project explores how the production of space at Phish shows works to form a Phish scene identity. I contend that the identity of the Phish scene, what the band members and fans refer to as ―it‖ and I call a spatial articulation of affective authenticity, is produced and formed by scene members themselves, drawing from the interrelations between the production of space (practices that create a specific environment) at shows and a white, middle and upper-middle class cultural memory of the Grateful Dead scene. I situate this process amidst a cultural backdrop of 1980s and 1990s identity politics and in particular, multiculturalism and suggest that Phish scene identity be analyzed as a middle class performance of resistance that achieves community and meaning without resisting class privilege.

  • Phish Scales: Trey Anastasio Breaks Down His Improvisation Techniques
Phish Scales: Trey Anastasio Breaks Down His Improvisation Techniques Posted 05/31/2011 at 6:59pm | by Andy Aledort Trey Anastasio breaks down his improvisation technique. In this classic interview, Andy Aledort talks to Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio about the magic behind his improv techniques "Musical inspiration can come from just about anywhere," says Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio. "For me, so much inspiration comes from the rhythms of the natural sounds in the air. Walking out in the country, you’ll hear certain sounds — a train, a boat, or maybe a horse walking on the road — and each of these sounds has a rhythm. If your mind is open, the simple rhythms of those sounds can inspire you and spark new musical ideas." Anastasio, holding court in a Mayflower Hotel suite high above the streets of New York City, has come to discuss Phish’s latest release, Farmhouse (Elektra), the band’s 11th album. Though Phish is rarely on MTV and resides somewhere well outside the Top 40 radio charts, the group has sold close to five million albums worldwide, with five of those certified Gold, and one, A Live One, certified Platinum. For years now, Phish has been riding the crest of a wave that erupted with the band’s welcome embrace from the "Deadhead" counterculture. Today, that once-insular musical scene has blossomed into a massive "jam band" revolution, paving the way for a cross-pollination of musical styles, sounds and genres. In many ways, Phish was the movement’s prototypical band. "In Phish, we’ve dropped the concept of musical style and accepted all music as a global mass of sound," says Anastasio.

We sat outside on the grass while people played frisbee and talked in the afternoon before the show. TA is, of course, Trey. BW is my friend Beth Whaley, who plays flute and saxophone and (coincidentally) attended a jazz workshop in Massachusetts, "Jazz in July", along with Trey several years ago. SC is me. Feedback is welcome....] Interview with Trey Anastasio, Olympia, Washington 4/25/92 SC: First of all, I wanted to ask you about the new songs. Were most of those written in Ireland? TA: I wrote something like ten songs in Ireland when I went over there. I just brought an acoustic guitar and I brought stacks and stacks of lyrics from Tom, I didn't write any lyrics. On the plane over there I started flipping through them and saw a couple of them that caught my eye right away; actually, the first one was NICU (sometimes called In an Intensive Care Unit). That little melody; as usual, that wasn't the one that jelled very easily. But anyway, the whole time I was there I was writing songs - Maze, Rift,...some of them then required more work sitting at a piano when I got home. I made a cassette tape over there of just acoustic guitar and general ideas for the songs, and then I went over to Tom's house when I got back, and we sat around and wrote new lyrics together and came up with other little ideas and made some four track tapes.
