Student government... Comet of the century? did you know? By Sarah Frances Tuttle Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) has gar- nered a lot of attention lately. Discov- ered in September of 2012 by Russian scientists, the comet was nicknamed ISON for the International Scientific Optical Network, a group of observa- tories in ten countries that helped to de- tect, track, and monitor objects in space. Observations suggest that its nucleus is a little more than 3 miles wide. Comet ISON was quick to be noticed because it was much brighter than comets nor- mally are for being so very far from the Sun.
