The Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) contains the only currently operating coronagraph in space that is not trained on the Sun. In an era of extreme-adaptive- optics-fed coronagraphs, and with the possibility of future space-based coronagraphs, we re-evaluate the con- trast performance of the STIS CCD camera. The 50CORON aperture consists of a series of occulting wedges and bars, including the recently commissioned BAR5 occulter. We discuss the latest procedures in obtaining high-contrast imaging of circumstellar disks and faint point sources with STIS. -

There is observational evidence of energy injection into the halo from past activity in the nucleus of the Milky Way1–4; however, the origin of this energy (star formation or supermassive-black-hole activity) is uncertain, and the causal connection between nuclear structures and large-scale features has not been established unequivocally. -

A Basic Requirement for Studying the Heavens Is Determining Where In
Abasic requirement for studying the heavens is determining where in the sky things are. To specify sky positions, astronomers have developed several coordinate systems. Each uses a coordinate grid projected on to the celestial sphere, in analogy to the geographic coordinate system used on the surface of the Earth. The coordinate systems differ only in their choice of the fundamental plane, which divides the sky into two equal hemispheres along a great circle (the fundamental plane of the geographic system is the Earth's equator) . Each coordinate system is named for its choice of fundamental plane. The equatorial coordinate system is probably the most widely used celestial coordinate system. It is also the one most closely related to the geographic coordinate system, because they use the same fun damental plane and the same poles. The projection of the Earth's equator onto the celestial sphere is called the celestial equator. Similarly, projecting the geographic poles on to the celest ial sphere defines the north and south celestial poles. However, there is an important difference between the equatorial and geographic coordinate systems: the geographic system is fixed to the Earth; it rotates as the Earth does . The equatorial system is fixed to the stars, so it appears to rotate across the sky with the stars, but of course it's really the Earth rotating under the fixed sky. The latitudinal (latitude-like) angle of the equatorial system is called declination (Dec for short) . It measures the angle of an object above or below the celestial equator. The longitud inal angle is called the right ascension (RA for short). -

Over 25 years of active service, he completed seven space missions and spent over 1,600 hours in space. After retiring, he founded Ad Astra Rocket, an aerospace engineering company that is researching electric propulsion engines and applying these advances to public transportation in his native Costa Rica The start of your space career dates back to the 1980s. What was the situation back then and what prospects were available? It was the start of the space shuttle era. Flights began in 1981, but they were very infrequent, as the technology was still under development. In 1980, there were only American astronauts at NASA, except for two Europeans (Claude Nicollier from Switzerland and Wubbo Ockels from the Netherlands) who entered the program in my group, marking the start of collaboration with the European Space Agency, which had just been established. My first space flight was in January 1986. During my 25 years at NASA, I participated as an astronaut on seven missions, sharing the world record for space flights with my colleague Jerry Ross. -

Compact steep-spectrum radio sources and giga-hertz peaked spectrum radio sources (CSS/GPS) are generally considered to be mostly young radio sources. In recent years we studied at many wavelengths a sample of these objects selected from the B3-VLA catalog: the B3-VLA CSS sample. Only ≈60% of the sources were optically identified. Aims. We aim to increase the number of optical identifications and study the properties of the host galaxies of young radio sources. Methods. We cross-correlated the CSS B3-VLA sample with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), DR7, and complemented the SDSS photometry with available GALEX (DR 4/5 and 6) and near-IR data from UKIRT and 2MASS. Results. We obtained new identifications and photometric redshifts for eight faint galaxies and for one quasar and two quasar candi- dates. Overall we have 27 galaxies with SDSS photometry in five bands, for which we derived the ultraviolet-optical spectral energy distribution (UV-O-SED). We extended our investigation to additional CSS/GPS selected from the literature. -

A combined approach of image deconvolution and modelling has made it possible to investigate the starlight distribution in M87 down to a limiting radius of about 0'.'04 from the nucleus (or about 3 pc from the nucleus if the Virgo cluster is at 16 Mpc). The results show that the central struc ture of M87 can be described by three compo nents: a power-law starlight profile with an r·114 slope which continues unabated into the center, an unresolved central point source, and optical coun terparts of the jet knots identified by VLBI obser vations. In both the V- and /-band Planetary Camera images, the stellar cusp is consistent with the black-hole model proposed for M87 by Young et al. in 1978; in this model, there is a central mas sive object of about 3 x 109 Me. -
