Dr Jonny Evans received a Provost’s Teaching Award, and Matthew Scroggs (Postgraduate Teaching Assistant) and Dr Luciano Rila won Faculty awards for their outstanding teaching. Additionally, in recognition of the importance of teaching in the department, we have inaugurated our own teaching prize to be awarded annually at the De Morgan Dinner. The prize is open to anyone in the department involved in teaching or its support. I am pleased that first recipient was Professor Helen Wilson, for her teaching excellence, curriculum development of applied Robb McDonald at the launch of the Henrici Model mathematics modules and her training of new (pg 14) PhD Teaching Assistants. By comparing the approaches of the two mathematicians, we show that Clebsch’s act of naming was rooted in a projective geometric reinterpretation of Riemann’s research, and that his Geschlecht was actually a different notion than that of Riemann. We also prove that until the beginning of the 1880s, mathematicians clearly distinguished between the notions of Clebsch and Riemann, the former being mainly associated with algebraic curves, and the latter with surfaces and Riemann surfaces.

    Chapter 9 Physics Alumni 1851–1961 Students 1871–76 The first student to graduate with a Victoria University (Owens College) degree in physics was Albert Griffiths in 1890. From 1867 until 1890, students registered for full time or part time courses and in some cases, proceeded to study for degree courses elsewhere. After graduating, Albert Griffiths was a research student, fellow, demonstrator and lecturer at Owens between 1892 and 1898, in between posts at Freiburg, Southampton and Sheffield. He became Head of the Physics Department at Birkbeck in 1900. E E D Davies, born on the Isle of Man, obtained a BSc in mathematics in 1889, an MSc in 1892, a BA in 1893 before becoming a Congregational Minister in 1895. Joseph Thompson lists him [246], as a student at the Lancashire Independent College in 1893.

    Models from the 19th Century used for Visualizing Optical Phenomena and Line Geometry David E. Rowe In 1891, one year after the founding of the Deutsche Mathematiker- Vereinigung (DMV), the Munich mathematician Walther Dyck faced a daunt- ing challenge. Dyck was eager to play an active role in DMV affairs, just as he had since 1884 as professor at Munich's Technische Hochschule (on his career, see [Hashagen 2003]). Thus he agreed, at first happily, to organize an exhibition of mathematical models and instruments for the forthcoming annual meeting of the DMV to be held in Nuremberg. Dyck's plan was ex- ceptionally ambitious, though he encountered many problems along the way. He hoped to obtain support for a truly international exhibition, drawing on work by model-makers in France, Russia, Great Britain, Switzerland, and of course throughout Germany. Most of these countries, however, were only modestly represented in the end, with the notable exception of the British. Dyck had to arrange for finding adequate space in Nuremberg for the exhibi- tion, paying for the transportation costs, and no doubt most time consuming of all, he had to edit single handedly the extensive exhibition catalog in time arXiv:1912.07138v1 [math.HO] 15 Dec 2019 for the opening. At the last moment, however, a cholera epidemic broke out in Germany that threatened to nullify all of Dyck's plans. When he learned that the DMV meeting had been canceled, he immediately proposed that the next annual gathering take place in 1893 in Munich. There he had both help- ful hands as well as ready access to the necessary infrastructure.

It highlights some of the famous mathematicians who were involved for many years as teachers of this mathematics, including Augustus De Morgan, James Joseph Sylvester, and Karl Pearson. The paper also investigates the wide variety of teaching establishments, including mainly academic institutions (University College, King's College), the military colleges (Royal Military Academy, Woolwich and Royal Naval College, Greenwich), the women's colleges (Bedford and Queen's), and the technical colleges and polytechnics (e.g., Central Technical Institute) which began to appear during the latter part of this period. Although his visits to the United States generally were in connection with specific conferences or meetings - he was a regular attender at Lunar and Planetary Science conferences in Houston, Texas and American Geophysical Union meetings, for example - he very often also took the opportunity to visit colleagues and deliver lectures at other research centres and there may be voluminous correspondence relating to such more informal visits. There is also material relating to meetings within the UK. There is good documentation of Runcorn's attendance at Royal Astronomical Socjety and Royal Society discussion meetings, and of his work promoting, organising and contributing to NATO Advanced Study Institutes held at Newcastle. Not all of Runcorn's visits are recorded, even in this very large section. Many meetings in connection with the international and European geophysics and planetary science organisations with which he was associated are documented in section G, Societies and organisations.

    Appendix A: Margherita Beloch Piazzolla: “Alcune applicazioni del metodo del ripiegamento della carta di Sundara Row” This appendix presents, for the first time, a translation from Italian into English of Beloch’s four-page-long paper “Alcune applicazioni del metodo del ripiegamento della carta di Sundara Row,”1 published in 1934 in “Atti dell’Acc. di Scienze Mediche, Naturali e Matematiche di Ferrara Serie II, Vol. XI”; the translation is organized according to the numeration of the original paper (pp. 186–189). The footnotes presented in this section are Beloch’s, while remarks and explanations regarding the content of the paper are given in square brackets in a smaller font.
