  • SOUTHAMPTON ATHLETIC CLUB ROLL of HONOUR Best
SOUTHAMPTON ATHLETIC CLUB ROLL OF HONOUR Best performances In 1886 C, Rogers of Southampton Harriers won the A.A.A. 4 miles title. Hampshire A.A. have had an enquiry from a lady about her grandfather who was cycling down from a village outside Andover in the 1890’s to run (in hobnail boots) in cross-country and Hare & Hounds. As he was the hare sometimes, this again supports a local club membership. H.A.A.A. was formed in 1927. Probably due to the clash Hampshire Athletic Club changed its name to Southampton Amateur Athletic Club on 15 th February, 1932. A Ladies Section was added on 14 th December, 1949 for cross-country but track and field, badminton and netball quickly followed. The club amalgamated with Eastleigh Amateur A.C. on 1 st December, 1970.to form Southampton & Eastleigh A,C. Later names were Southampton City A.C. and after amalgamation with Team Solent in November, 2004 Team Southampton. The next amalgamation was with Southampton R.C. on 1 ST April, 2010 to become the present Southampton A.C. As no club was dissolved to form Southampton A.C. I have used members of all the named clubs, except the Harriers, to assemble these records. I am particularly indebted to Rod Davies and Aaron Bennett for their data. So far there is one deliberate mistake and doubtless many unintentional ones. I am only too happy to be corrected, so inundate me with e-mail at [email protected] . The clubs have competed on the grass tracks at the County Cricket Ground, the Civil Service Ground and Fleming Park, and the Redgra Education track at Redbridge.

  • Welsh Athletics Milestones
Welsh Athletics Milestones Recalled by Clive Williams 1860 John Chambers holds a sports meeting at Hafod House, Aberystwyth - probably the first record of an athletics meeting being held in Wales 1865 Chambers organises “athletic sports” at Aberystwyth. 1865 William Richards, born in “Glamorgan” sets a world record for the mile with 4 mins. 17 ¼ seconds. 1871 St. David’s College Lampeter and Llandovery College hold athletics “sports” meetings. 1875 Newport Athletic Club formed and holds “athletic sports.” 1877 Cardiff-born William Gale achieves the phenomenal deed of walking 1,500 miles in 1,000 hours. He was the world’s leading pedestrian. 1879 Llanfair Caereinion Powys-born George Dunning sets a world 40 miles record at Stamford Bridge of 4:50.12. 1880 Newport AC represented by Richard Mullock at the formation of the AAA at The Randolph Hotel, Oxford - Chambers also there. 1881 Dunning effectively sets an inaugural world record for the half-marathon when he runs 1:13.46 on a track at Stamford Bridge. The distance is actually 13 miles 440 yards, i.e. further than the designated half marathon distance of 13 miles 192.5 yards. 1881 Dunning becomes the first Welsh born athlete to win the (English) National cross country title. 1882 Roath (Cardiff) Harriers formed. They amalgamated with Birchgrove (Cardiff) Harriers in 1968 to form Cardiff AAC.1890. 1890 Will Parry, born in Buttington, near Welshpool wins the (English) National cross country title for a third successive year. 1893 First Welsh amateur track championships held as part of an open sports meeting. Just 2 events held - 100 yards and mile won by Charles Thomas (Reading AC) and Hugh Fairlamb (Roath).

  • NUTS NOTES Vol.19 No.1 January 1981
NUTS NOTES Vol.19 No.1 January 1981 NUTS We Need You! The main aim of the NUTS is to produce annual ranking lists, as published in the UK Athletics Annual. There are more and more athletics meetings held each year, and most do not get reported in ’AW’. Unfortunately many pretty important fixtures are included in this category. Also ’AW' may not receive full details, and for our lists we, of course, need exact dates, Christian names, dates of birth etc. as well. The compilers of the various events and age groups need your help in gathering information. Please send in as much as you can, whether copies of official results, or just your own jottings. Over the past decade there has been a sharp fall in the flow of results from members, yet there has probably been an increase in the number of important meetings whose results do not get into ’AW'. Surely some NUTS members go to Athletics meetings! If you do, never assume, unless an ’AW* man is there, that results will be published. In 1980, for instance, the Southern Junior and Youths Championships were missed as were many county championships, including for the second year at least such important ones as Surrey and Warwickshire. Nor have we seen the South Western Championships, many BMC races and of course Stretford results. The list goes on! I am sure that there were NUTS members present at some of the above and other such •missing’ meetings. Please help to ensure that compilers have an easier task in 1981.
