Abd-Elnaby National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, Alexandria, Egypt Abstract: Faunistic analysis of benthic samples were obtained during a trip to the south part of Suez Canal, Egypt, during April, 2007, which revealed the presence of 82 polychaete species, 18 of them are considered as new records for the Egyptian waters. In order to achieve this study fouling components and sediments samples were collected by Van Veen grab (0.5 to 8 m depths), from six stations extending from Deversoir to Port Toufiq. Illustrative taxonomical characters is provided for each newly recorded species; as well as geographic distribution are given to draw a picture of the new records, which indicated that most of them are lessepsian migrant and 6 species are of Mediterranean and Adriatic Sea affinity. Also the polychaete recorded formed less dense of population on shallow water, hard substrates and also in sediment. Abstract: Isla del Coco (also known as Cocos Island) is an oceanic island in the Eastern Tropical Pacific; it is part of the largest national park of Costa Rica and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island has been visited since the 16th Century due to its abundance of freshwater and wood. Marine biodiversity studies of the island started in the late 19th Century, with an intense period of research in the 1930’s, and again from the mid 1990’s to the present. The information is scattered and, in some cases, in old publications that are difficult to access. Here I have compiled published records of the marine organisms of the island. At least 1688 species are recorded, with the gastropods (383 species), bony fishes (354 spp.) and crustaceans (at least 263 spp.) being the most species-rich groups; 45 species are endemic to Isla del Coco National Park (2.7% of the total). The number of species per kilometer of coastline and by square kilometer of seabed shallower than 200m deep are the highest recorded in the Eastern Tropical Pacific. Although the marine biodiversity of Isla del Coco is relatively well known, there are regions that need more exploration, for example, the south side, the pelagic environments, and deeper waters. -

Madeleine Brasier December 2017 i Abstract The diversity and biogeography of the Antarctic benthos has been shaped by its unique history through glacial cycles, the influence of circumpolar current regimes and seasonal food inputs. There is currently a large international research effort to define levels of species diversity, biogeography, functional traits and their sensitivity to changing environmental conditions. These data are vital in setting ecological baselines to monitor the effects of climate change and manage the impacts of human activities in the Southern Ocean. The findings from genetic level analyses into species diversity, biogeography and the trophic traits of two groups of benthic Antarctic polychaetes, an abundant taxa within macrofaunal communities are presented here. The first group contained free-living polychaetes collected from the Scotia, Amundsen and Weddell Seas, whilst the second group consisted of symbiotic polynoids taken from coral host species in the South Orkney Islands Southern Shelf Marine Protected Area. -

Biodiversity and Biogeography of Polychaetes (Annelida): Globally and in Indonesia Joko Pamungkas A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Marine Science, University of Auckland October 2020 Chapte Abstract This thesis presents a review of the biodiversity of polychaete worms (Annelida) and their distribution across the globe. It also provides an evaluation of polychaete biodiversity studies in Indonesia and a description of a new polychaete species collected from Ambon Island, Province of Maluku, Indonesia. I reviewed polychaete data from the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS), and found that 11,456 accepted polychaete species (1417 genera, 85 families) have been formally described by 835 first authors since the middle of the 18th century. A further 5200 more polychaete species are predicted to be discovered by the year 2100. The total number of polychaete species in the world by the end of the 21st century is thus anticipated to be about 16,700 species. While the number of both species and authors increased, the average number of polychaete species described per author decreased. This suggested increased difficulty in finding new polychaete species today as most conspicuous species may have been discovered. I analysed polychaete datasets from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), the Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS), and my recently published checklist of Indonesian polychaete species, and identified 11 major biogeographic regions of polychaetes. They were: (1) North Atlantic & eastern and western parts of the Mediterranean, (2) Australia, (3) Indonesia, (4) New Zealand, (5) the Atlantic coasts of Spain and France, (6) Antarctica and the southern coast of Argentina, (7) Central Mediterranean Sea, (8) the western coast of the USA, (9) the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean, (10) Caribbean Sea and (11) Atlantic Ocean. -
