Marris Pedigree – Generations 18–29

Note 1: For reasons of space, not every side branch of the Marris pedigree is shown in detail. The descent below is for the “Marris of Burton Corner” line, so called the 1952 edition of Burke’s Landed Gentry. This is the line researched by Harold Colquhoun Marris OBE (1883-1966). Harold’s pedigree was accepted by Ulster Office, Dublin in 1938 and by the College of Arms in shortly afterwards.

Note 2: Other branches that connect into the tree below will be found in self-contained PDFs on the Marris Family History website – see: https://www.marrisfamilyhistory.uk/.

3: Individuals in the main line of descent are shown below in blue bold type, underlined.

Generation 21

21.5 George MARRIS (Thomas, George, John) was buried on 13 Apr 1683 in Barrow upon Humber, Lincs.

George was a yeoman of Barrow-upon-Humber. I have not located his baptism but, looking at the spread of the baptisms of his siblings, it is possible he was baptised around 1607-08. He is named in his father’s will as the inheritor of the lands at Barrow-upon- Humber.

According to Burke’s Landed Gentry (1952), George married Anne Teanbie on 22nd August 1631. Unfortunately, Burke’s doesn’t say where the marriage took place and, despite some effort, I have not found the marriage in Parish Registers of the area. However, we do know of a Marriage Allegation (SoG - Fiche: ML/Lin/90937/1-6 - Ref: MB 1631 / 14) showing that the couple applied to marry by licence. The entry is dated 1631 and names George Marris and Anne Teanby [sic] as the intended couple.

George married Anne TEANBIE on 22 Aug 1631. Anne was buried on 20 Mar 1676 in Barrow upon Humber, Lincs.

They had the following children:

John Marris of Barrow, Yeoman, made his will (LCC Wills 1683/ii/65/I/183/17) on 9 April 1683 and it was proved 27(?) April 1683. He asked to be buried at the Parish Church of Barrow. He owned Barnoldby Farme. The will also mentions property at North Kelsey. His will names his sons George Marris and John Marris (both under 21 years), his father George Marris, his wife Grace Marris, daughters Anne Marris, Elizabeth Marris, Grace Marris and Susanna Marris (all under 21 years).

Note: by his wife Grace, John had six children, all christened in Barrow upon Humber, Lincs: Ann (on 25 Jul 1669), George (on 30 Jun 1672), Elizabeth (on 13 Jan 1674/1675), Grace (on 21 Jan 1676/1677 and buried there the same day), Susannah (on 13 Jul 1679) and John (on 18 Jun 1682).

22.11 George MARRIS (George, Thomas, George, John) was christened on 21 May 1654 in Barrow upon Humber, Lincs. He died in Apr 1716.

George Marris, Cottager of Barrow, made his will (LCC Wills 1716/ii/73) on 17 April 1716 and it was proved 14 May 1716. The will is incorrectly indexed under the name "Morris" at the Lincolnshire Archives. The will does not specify where the testator wished to be buried, nor does it mention property. The will names the testator's wife Anne (Executrix), sons John Marris, George Marris and Thomas Marris, daughters Mary Rain, Anne Marris, Elizabeth Jackson, grandson John Marris (the son of John Marris), grandchildren Henry Rain, RObert Rain, John Rain and Anne Rain (children of Mary Rain), grandson Robert Jackson (son of Elizabeth Jackson), and witnesses Michael Doughty and William Jackson.

George married Anne UPPLEBY on 18 Jun 1679 in Barrow upon Humber, Lincs.

George Marris and Ann Uppleby were married at Barrow on Humber on 18 June 1679. The following day, their marriage is also recorded in the Thornton Curtis PRs. The Thornton PRs say that Ann was of Barton.

George and Anne had the following children:

23.1 (f) Mary MARRIS was christened on 12 Dec 1681 in Thornton Curtis, Lincs. Mary married Henry RAINS on 15 Jan 1706/1707 in Barrow upon Humber, Lincs.

George Marris was a joiner and shopkeeper. He made his will (LCC Wills 1733/ 169) on 20 May 1733 and it was proved in the same year. His will names his wife Ann, his mother Ann, his son George, daughter Catherine, brother John MARRIS of Goxhill, two of John’s children (Henry and Mary), brother Thomas of Barrow and Thomas’ children (unnamed). In his will, he left his lands, meadows etc at Goxhill to his wife Ann and, after her death, he bequeathed those lands that were Ann’s before marriage to pass to son George, while his other lands at Goxhill should pass to his daughter Catherine.

George married Ann WAKELIN on 29 May 1722 in Goxhill, Lincs. Ann was christened on 11 Oct 1701 in Goxhill, Lincs.

Ann WAKELIN was the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth WAKLIN [sic]. Ann was baptised at Goxhill on 11th October 1701. After the death of her husband George MARRIS, it would appear that Ann Marris married again (to RICHARDSON). We know this from the will of George Marris's brother William MARRIS of Wrawby. The will names William MARRIS's sister in law Ann RICHARDSON, mother of Catharine and Mary MARRIS of Goxhill. Ann MARRIS's second husband is presumed to be William RICHARDSON. The Thornton Curtis PRs show the marriage of Ann MARRISS [sic] to Wm. Richardson on 5(?) June 1734, only a year after the death of George MARRIS, her first husband.

George and Ann had six children, all christened at Goxhill: Elizabeth (on 15 June 1723 and buried there on 19 May 1733), George (on 19 May 1725), Ann (on 6 Apr 1727 and buried there on 28 Aug 1727), Mary (on 15 Nov 1730and buried there on 12 Oct 1732), Mary (on 25 Apr 1733) and Catherine (on 25 Apr 1733).

It was one of that couple’s sons, Edward Gillyatt MARRIS (1786-1829) who changed his name by Deed Poll to Edward Gillyatt GILLYATT in order to inherit the fortune of his mother’s childless first cousin Edward GILLYATT who worked for the Bank of in London.

He described himself as Thomas Marris of Croxton, farmer. He left his property at Goxhill to his wife Mary for life and, after her death, to pass to their eldest son Thomas Marris (Jnr). The will also names his other son, George, his daughters Ann Marris, Bridgett (the wife of Thomas Robinson, clerk) and Elizabeth Marris. The will provides ample proof of relationships and his place in the Marris pedigree accepted by the College of Arms in 1940.

Thomas married Mary SYBERRY on 17 Dec 1755 in Barton-upon-Humber (St Peter), Lincs. Mary was born about 1734. She died on 3 Dec 1807. She was buried on 6 Dec 1807 in Barton-upon-Humber (St Peter), Lincs.

His dramatic death was reported in The Times newspaper on 6th July 1841 as follows:

Awfully Sudden Death On Saturday, the 26th ult, Lord Worsley and party arrived at Caistor. His Lordship immediately addressed the freeholders and electors in the Market-place, and was followed by Mr. Philip Skipworth, of Laceby, who while in the act of speaking, suddenly complained of dizziness in the head, and in five minutes was a corpse. This awfully sudden event completely put a stop to electioneering business, and the crowd dispersed immediately. 26.8 William MARRIS (Thomas, Thomas, John, George, George, Thomas, George, John) was born on 24 Mar 1803. He was christened on 24 Mar 1803 in Great Limber, Lincs. He died on 6 Oct 1866 in Great Limber, Lincs. He was buried on 9 Oct 1866 in Great Limber, Lincs.

William married Elizabeth ANGUS. Elizabeth was born about 1814 in Newcastle-upon- Tyne, Northumberland. She died on 2 Jul 1860. She was buried on 5 Jul 1860 in Great Limber, Lincs.

William Marris of Great Limber was a successful farmer and breeder of racehorses. He owned the racehorse Peter Simple, famous in its day in both Lincolnshire and country- wide. On three occasions in the 1840s, Peter Simple was placed in the Grand National. William Marris later bred a Grand National winner, Half Cast, which won in 1859.

William Marris committed suicide by hanging himself in the garden after (according to an acquaintance) receiving a letter from "one of his sons that morning that prayed upon his mind." William's brother George Marris presided over the inquest. The Mail (dated 13 October 1866) gave another theory:

Re: Wm Marris suicide – It may not be generally known but is a common topic here that Mr Marris had recently deeply regretted parting with a valuable horse he had bred, alluding to the already celebrated “Ramah” which he sold for £70 & after becoming the property of Lord Westmorland, achieved such extraordinary success at Doncaster etc. Mr Marris had a yearling filly also for which he asked £1000 & for which he had been offered £800. In the paddock where he kept the latter he came to his melancholy end. That the horse transaction had produced sufficient mental excitement to overthrow reason is an assumption scarcely worth notice.
