Marris Pedigree – Generations 18–29 Note 1: For reasons of space, not every side branch of the Marris pedigree is shown in detail. The descent below is for the “Marris of Burton Corner” line, so called the 1952 edition of Burke’s Landed Gentry. This is the line researched by Harold Colquhoun Marris OBE (1883-1966). Harold’s pedigree was accepted by Ulster Office, Dublin in 1938 and by the College of Arms in London shortly afterwards. Generation 18 18.1 John MARRIS was born before 1488. He died in 1552. John married Agnes BELL. Agnes died in 1562. John Marris, Yeoman of South Carlton, made his will (PCC Wills – F22 Powell, Prob 11/35, Quire 23) on 6th June 1552 (proved on 21st August in the same year). The will names among others his wife Agnes, brother Lawrence, unnamed children of Lawrence, and his own children, who (according to the will) were: Robert (married to Alice), William (married), John (married), George (unmarried), Ellen (married to Robert Weste), Agnes (married to William Gildon), Janet (married to Irelande), Mary (unmarried) and Elizabeth (married to Frankes). John Marris had numerous properties in the County of Lincoln, in such places as North Kelsey, South Kelsey, Rothwell and Nettleton. He bequeathed these properties to his wife Agnes and, after her death, to his various sons (below). Agnes Marris made her will (PCC Wills – 19 Streat, Prob 11/45, ff.137-138) on 27th June 1562 and it was proved 10th July 1562. The will names among others her children: Robert (married to Alice), William (married with children), John (married with children), George (unmarried), Mary (unmarried, not yet 21), Agnes (married to William Gildon). Ellen (married to Robert Weste) and Janet Reade (deceased). Agnes’s daughter Elizabeth (married to Frankes) is not mentioned in the will but there is mention of a ward, Hugh Frankish – suggesting that Elizabeth had died leaving a child needing to be raised. John and Agnes had the following children: 19.1 (m) Robert MARRIS was buried on 20 Apr 1591 in Grasby, Lincs. Robert married (1) Alice ANDERSON. Robert married (2) Grace BECK on 17 May 1584 in Barton upon Humber, Lincs. Note: By his first wife Alice, Robert Marris had nine children (Thomas, William, Robert, Nicholas, Margaret, Alice, John, Barbara and Jenet). This is the start of several generations of MARRIS that lived at Grasby, Lincs. William Marris, Yeoman of Fillingham, Lincs, made his will (Stow Wills 1587-90, I) on 28 March 28 Eliz I (i.e. 1586) and it was proved 31 March 1587. The will names, among others, his wife Anne, his children Robert, Anne and Mary, his brother George, his sister 30 Sep 2019 (V4) © G Philip Marris Page 1 Mary and granddaughter Elizabeth (Robert's daughter). Various cousins and an uncle in the Sanderson family are also mentioned. William married (1) Elizabeth STAMPE. William married (2) Anne KYME. Anne died in 1589/1590. Anne Marris made her will (LCC Wills 1587-90, 412) on 18 October 31 Eliz I (i.e. 1589). It was proved on 26 December 1590. The will names various relatives in the Sanderson family, her cousin Robert Bell, sister Mary Guilden [sic], brother Henry, daughters Mary and Anne, son Robert and her late son John, whom she mentions left a will. By his first wife Elizabeth STAMPE, William had a son John who married Margaret Wilson on 8 June 1582 in Willingham By Stow, Lincs. They had a daughter Elizabeth MARRIS who was Christened on 23 Aug 1584 in Willingham By Stow, Lincs. John MARRIS, Yeoman of Willingham, Lincs, made his will (LCC Wills 1585, ii, 161) on 1 July 1585 and it was proved on 21 July 1585.l By his second wife Anne KYME, William had three children: Robert (Abt 1565 – 1591/92 who had a daughter Elizabeth), Mary (who married WEST) and Anne (born Abt 1571) who married William MALTBIE). 19.3 (m) John MARRIS was buried on 11 Apr 1604 in North Kelsey, Lincs. John married (1) Alison BROCKLESBY on 16 Oct 1559. John married (2) Jane AISCOUGH. Note: By his first wife Alison, John Marris had eight children (John, William, Robert, Francis, Thomas, Agnes, Mary and ELizabeth). This is the start of a Marris branch living at North Kelsey, Rothwell and other places in Lincolnshire. Elizabeth married FRANKES. 19.6 (f) Ellen MARRIS. Ellen married Robert WEST. 19.7 (f) Agnes MARRIS. 19.8 (f) Janet MARRIS died before 27 Jun 1562. Janet married (1) IRELANDE. George married (2) Alice ELSHAM on 29 Oct 1605 in North Kelsey, Lincs. George Marris is named in the will (PRO Wills 1552 F22 Powell, PROB 11/35, Quire 23) of his father, John Marris of South Carlton, Lincs (above). His father left him lands at North Kelsey. The will says that George Marris at that time was not of full age. George Marris is also named in the will (PRO Wills 1562 19 Streat, PROB 11/45, 137- 138) of his mother Agnes Marris of South Carlton. George was still unmarried at the time of his mother's will. George Marris is also named in the will (PRO Wills 1604 PROB 11/104 - see also LCC Wills 1608, 4/214) of John Marris the Elder of North Kelsey. In that will John Marris describes George Marris as "my brother George Marris of North Kelsey". George Marris was made executor of John's will. George Marris of North Kelsey made his own will (LCC Wills 1605, 4, 124) on 28 July 1605 and it was proved at Lincoln on 21 August 1605. The will did not specify a particular place of burial. The will names Sir Thomas Mounson, Alice Marris (wife), Marie Lambert (daughter, married), Elizabeth Marris (daughter in law), Anne Marris (daughter in law), Jane Marris (daughter in law), John Marris (son, executor), Thomas Marris (son, supervisor), Thomas Lambert (Son-in-law and husband of Marie Lambert, supervisor), Robert Marris (son), John Elsham (step-son, Alice's son from previous marriage), Thomas Marris (grandson < 21 years, the son of John Marris, executor), and fr(?) Rankingson(?). By his first wife, George had the following children: 20.1 (m) John MARRIS died after 23 Apr 1614. John married Unknown . + 20.2 (m) Thomas MARRIS was born in 1577/1578. He was buried on 27 Apr 1614. 20.3 (m) Robert MARRIS. 20.4 (f) Marie MARRIS. Marie married Thomas LAMBERT. 30 Sep 2019 (V4) © G Philip Marris Page 3 Generation 20 20.2 Thomas MARRIS (George, John) was born in 1577/1578. He was buried on 27 Apr 1614 in Barrow upon Humber, Lincs. Thomas made his will on 23rd April 1614 and it was proved on 4th May in the same year. In his will, he described himself as “Thomas Marris of Barrow in the County of Lincoln, Yeoman”. He bequeathed to his wife Elizabeth “the messuage wherein I nowe dwell with all the edifices orchards gardings land arrable medowes & leyes belonging to the same in suche manner as I do nowe occupye and also my close of pasture in Barrowe aforesaid with the appurtenances the same with the appurtenances called Barnabie(?) garthe”. He left all his “lands tenements and hereditaments with th’appurtenances in North Kelsey” to his daughter Alice. Thomas married (1) Anne WILKIN in May 1599 in Barrow upon Humber, Lincs. Anne was buried on 6 Sep 1612 in Barrow upon Humber, Lincs. Thomas and Anne had the following children: 21.1 Ann MARRIS was christened on 20 Mar 1599/1600 in Barrow upon Humber, Lincs. 21.2 (f) Alice MARRIS was christened on 4 Nov 1601 in Barrow upon Humber, Lincs. 21.3 (f) Katherine MARRIS was christened on 14 Feb 1603/1604 in Barrow upon Humber, Lincs. 21.4 (f) Isabell MARRIS was christened on 9 Mar 1605/1606 in Barrow upon Humber, Lincs. Isabell married James SARGEANT on 6 Apr 1623 in Barrow upon Humber, Lincs. + 21.5 (m) George MARRIS was buried on 13 Apr 1683. 21.6 (f) Elizabeth MARRIS was christened on 5 Nov 1609 in Barrow upon Humber, Lincs. Thomas married (2) Elizabeth WELLS on 11 Feb 1613/1614 in Barton upon Humber, Lincs. Elizabeth was born in 1588/1589. Thomas and Elizabeth had the following child: 21.7 (m) William MARRIS was christened on 5 May 1614 in Barrow upon Humber, Lincs. He was buried on 7 May 1614 in Barrow upon Humber, Lincs. 30 Sep 2019 (V4) © G Philip Marris Page 4 Generation 21 21.5 George MARRIS (Thomas, George, John) was buried on 13 Apr 1683 in Barrow upon Humber, Lincs. George was a yeoman of Barrow-upon-Humber. I have not located his baptism but, looking at the spread of the baptisms of his siblings, it is possible he was baptised around 1607-08.
