Lawrence Hill, author of The Book of Negroes, to speak at Uxbridge Secondary School Media Invitation Date April 23, 2018. Award-winning Canadian author Lawrence Hill will speak to students about what it takes to be a successful writer. Event: A Speaking Engagement with Lawrence Hill Date: May 4, 2018. Time: 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Location: Uxbridge Secondary School library – 127 Planks Lane, Uxbridge, ON L9P 1K5 Audience: Grades 9 - 12 Media Time: ONLY 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Students from eight high schools in DDSB will have the opportunity to hear from the award- winning Canadian author Lawrence Hill. He is well-known worldwide for his book The Book of Negros, which was adapted into a CBC mini-series, and for his most recent book The Illegal. Mr. Hill will discuss how he became a writer, the business of writing, his writing process, researching and Black History. The Q&A session will be a meaningful and exciting experience for our guest speaker as well as the 75 students who will be in attendance. The Durham District School Board (DDSB) is responsible for public education in the rural settings of Uxbridge, Brock and Scugog Townships and the urban settings of Ajax, Whitby, Pickering and Oshawa. The DDSB employs 7,600 teaching and educational services staff. With 130 elementary and secondary schools and learning centres, the DDSB accommodates more than 70,000 regular day students and thousands more who take advantage of a wide variety of continuing education and adult credit courses. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Dated: 3 Abstract This thesis articulates the resonances between J. M. Coetzee's lifelong engagement with mathematics and his practice as a novelist, critic, and poet. Though the critical discourse surrounding Coetzee's literary work continues to flourish, and though the basic details of his background in mathematics are now widely acknowledged, his inheritance from that background has not yet been the subject of a comprehensive and mathematically- literate account. In providing such an account, I propose that these two strands of his intellectual trajectory not only developed in parallel, but together engendered several of the characteristic qualities of his finest work. The structure of the thesis is essentially thematic, but is also broadly chronological. Chapter 1 focuses on Coetzee's poetry, charting the increasing involvement of mathematical concepts and methods in his practice and poetics between 1958 and 1979. Chapter 2 situates his master's thesis alongside archival materials from the early stages of his academic career, and thus traces the development of his philosophical interest in the migration of quantificatory metaphors into other conceptual domains. Concentrating on his doctoral thesis and a series of contemporaneous reviews, essays, and lecture notes, Chapter 3 details the calculated ambivalence with which he therein articulates, adopts, and challenges various statistical methods designed to disclose objective truth.

About the Author
Lawrence Hill: About the Author Hill is the author of ten books of fiction and non-fiction. In 2005, he won his first Writing literary honour: a National Magazine Award for the article “Is Africa’s Pain Black America’s Burden?” published in The Walrus. His first two novels were Some Great Thing and Any Known Blood, and his first non-fiction work to attract national attention was the memoir Black Berry, Sweet Juice: On Being Black and White in Canada. But it was his third novel, The Book of Negroes (HarperCollins Canada, 2007) — published in some countries as Someone Knows My Name and in French as Aminata — that attracted widespread attention in Canada and other countries. Lawrence Hill’s non-fiction book, Blood: The Stuff of Life was published in September 2013 by House of Anansi Press. Blood is a personal consideration of the physical, social, cultural and psychological aspects of blood, and how it defines, unites and divides us. Hill drew from the book to deliver the 2013 Massey Lectures across Canada. In 2013, Hill published the essay Dear Sir, I Intend to Burn Your Book: An Anatomy of a Book Burning (University of Alberta Press). His fourth novel, The Illegal, was published by HarperCollins Canada in 2015 and by WW Norton in the USA in 2016. Hill is currently writing a new novel and a children’s book, and is a professor of creative writing at the University of Guelph, in Ontario. Personal Lawrence Hill is the son of American immigrants — a black father and a white mother — who came to Canada the day after they married in 1953 in Washington, D.C.

Writing to Build Community By Lawrence Hill This piece was originally published in the Winter 2021 issue of Write, the magazine of The Writers’ Union of Canada. When I reimagine the publishing industry through community and collaboration, my mind always goes to my own development as a writer and the community ties that have arisen along the way. What was the first time that I imagined the process of making stories? When did I first write with passion or indignation? And how did working as a writer influence and enrich my own sense of belonging to communities? My brother Dan, sister Karen, and I were lucky to have a mother who read to us and a father who made up wild bedtime stories. My mother, Donna Hill, was a white, sharp-tongued, speak-no-nonsense civil rights activist who couldn’t cook to save her life, but who brought energy, voice, and passion to the things she read to us at night. One of her favourite readings, which I quickly memorized, was the poem “Disobedience” by A.A. Milne. Here’s how it starts: James James Morrison Morrison Weatherby George Dupree Took great care of his mother Though he was only three The repetition and the over-the-top verbosity appealed to my mother’s silly bone, and formed the marrow of mine. Listening to my mother read poems and stories taught me about playfulness, inanity, and absurdity in language. My father, Daniel G. Hill, an African American WWII vet who married my mother on the Howard University campus in Washington DC in 1953 and moved with her the next day to Toronto, which they both embraced as their new home, never read a book to us aloud.

The Past Is Present
1. Introduction It is difficult enough to figure out what it means to be Canadian, let alone African Canadian. (Clarke 1998, 98) In his article on Lawrence Hill’s second novel, Any Known Blood (1997), Winfried Siemerling asserts: “Our most post-identitarian moments and movements notwithstanding, identities are hardly a matter of the past.” (2004, 30) As I shall argue in this study, issues of identity might well be a matter of the past – yet this past is still vividly present. In exploring the constructions of collective memory in Lawrence Hill’s historical fiction, issues of identity are conceptualized as a selection and representation of memories from a contemporary per- spective to create what Lois Zamora (1997) has termed a ‘usable past’. More precisely, the constructions of collective memory in Hill’s writing represent a counter-hegemonic version of a usable past which amends mainstream Canadian constructions. In this endeavor, Hill is in fact emblematic of the vast majority of African-Canadian literature. As the epigraph above suggests, the proverbial preoccupation of Canadian literature with questions of identity – whether they are framed in terms of who/where, here/there, national/regional, or coloni- al/postcolonial1 – is mirrored, in fact even intensified, in Black Canadian literature.
