Note: Readings are available in English for students not taking Ukrainian as a major or minor. Yes √ No, not needed, no such projects involved DESCRIPTION The course deals with literary developments on the eve of and since Ukrainian independence (1991). The dramatic transformation of literature as an institution is examined against the background of the collapse of communism and socialist realism. Emphasis is on the most radical generation of writers and critics, their style, themes and ideologies. Readings include works by Iurii Andrukhovych, Natalka Bilotserkivetsʼ, Moisei Fishbein, Oleksandr Irvanetsʼ, Oleh Lysheha, Mykola Miroshnychenko, Viktor Neborak, Mykola Riabchuk, Mykola Soroka, Viktorija Stakh, Iurii Vynnychuk, and Oksana Zabuzhko. The practices of literary associations such as Bu-Ba-Bu and Luhosad are examined in light of post-colonial and post-modernist theory. The study of various genres focuses on formal and technical analysis. Videos, recordings, and poster art complement lectures and provide a glimpse into the youth culture that emerged after independence. Course will include guest lectures on contemporary music and visual poetry. The writer Mykola Riabchuk (Tompkins Professor 2007-08) will discuss cultural politics in independent Ukraine. The poet Natalka Bilotserkivetsʼ will give a reading of her poetry and offer a seminar on the poets of her generation. The Folk Band Burdon (from Lʼviv) will perform during International Week. Students are expected to meet for one additional 2.5 hour period for the viewing of a contemporary film. OBJECTIVES The course will familiarize students with the formal and thematic features of post-communist writings, by contrasting them with the legacy of socialist realism. It will also introduce them to the changing role of the writer in Ukrainian society and the manner in which the Internet affects the dissemination of culture and the reformulation of the cultural canon. Students will be encouraged to explore texts that have been set to music by popular rock groups, as well as what the various phenomena reveal about contemporary Ukrainian identity. REQUIRED TEXTS. The first report is due on 17 January, the last on 27 March] - Outline & Bibliography for one 10-15-minute Oral Presentation 09% - Delivery of Oral Presentation 09% - Two response papers (approximately 1— 1.5 pp in length), commenting on two of the presentations made by classmates or guest lecturers, or on one of these presentations and the film selection. These responses will be read by all members of the class and discussed during the last week of the semester. 12% - EXAM PROJECT (due 21 April). Approximately ten-twelve pages long, double-spaced and typed, this paper should combine both research and analysis. All sources are to be cited according to the Chicago Manual of Style.
