His area of interest is post-Communist politics in Ukraine and Russia. He was the guest editor and a contributor to a special issue of Canadian Slavonic Papers (vol. 47, nos. 3^), devoted to the Orange Revolution in Ukraine. Roman Ivashkiv has an M.A. in translation studies from the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and an M.A. in Russian and Comparative Literature from Pennsylvania State University. Presently he is a Ph.D. candidate in Ukrainian language and literature at the University of Toronto. His areas of interest are postmodernism in Ukrainian, Russian, and Anglophone literatures; translation studies; irony and intertextuality; and the representation of reality in literature. Alexander Kratochvil is a doctor of philosophy and assistant professor at the Institute of Slavonic Studies of the E.-M. Arndt University of Greifswald. He is the director of the Greifswnld Ukrainian Summer Academy at the Alfried Krupp Scientific College and the editor of Greifswalder Ukrainistische Hefte. His fields of interest are twentieth-century Ukrainian literature and language and contem- porary Central European literatures. He has co-authored articles on recent linguistic processes in Ukraine, Poland, and Europe; the history of Ukrainian literature; the post-Andrukhovych generation of Ukrainian writers; and the newest literary developments in Central Europe. He has also translated some works by Yuri Andrukhovych, Oksana Zabuzhko, Serhii Zhadan, and Natalka Sniadanko into German. Marko Robert Stech is the managing director of the CIUS Press, and the project manager of the Internet Encyclopedia of Ukraine Project and the Hrushevsky Translation Project at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies. He is a specialist on twentieth-century Ukrainian literature and has written many articles, both in English and Ukrainian, in the field. He has compiled an anthology of Ihor Kostetsky’s works (Krytyka, 2005) and has written a novel, Holos (Piramida, 2005). VI Michal Wawrzonek is a doctor of the humanities, a philologist, politologist, and culturologist. He heads the Department of International Relations and National Security at the Higher School of Business - National-Louis University in Nowy S§icz, Poland, and is also a staff member of the Department of Ukrainian Studies of the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Poland. His areas of interest are Ukraine's cultural history to the beginning of the twentieth century, the contemporary political system in Ukraine, Eastern Christianity in the post- Soviet space, and Ukrainian political thought. His most recent publications include Ekumenichna diialnist mytropolyta A. Sheptytskoho v Ukraini ta v Rosii (in Analecta Ordinis Sancti Basilii Magni, 2006) and an article on Polish- Ukrainian reconciliation after the Orange Revolution. s Journal of Ukrainian Studies 32, no. 1 (Summer 2007) Kulish and the Devil Marko Robert Stech In my essay on Mykola Kulish’ s two earliest plays, 97 (1924) and Komuna v stepakh (A Commune in the Steppes, 1925),' I tried to show how these apparently naive“ propaganda plays (or “models of socialist realism in its formative period”^) are essentially studies of the psychic processes that shaped the perceptions and actions of peasants, both revolutionaries and counter-revolutionaries, in the elemental struggle that flared up in the remote steppe villages of southern Ukraine at the beginning of the 1920s. I demonstrated in what way and due to what underlying psychological causes these people perceived the panorama of revolutionary cataclysms not as an outcome of radical socio-economic transformations (as interpreted by the Marxist critics), but as a battle- ground of religious forces, namely, the confrontation between the quasi- religious Soviet power and the Christian church for control over people’s lives and souls.
