THE AUDRE LORDE PROJECT JOB DESCRIPTION The Audre Lorde Project (ALP) is a Lesbian Gay Bisexual Two Spirit Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming (LGBTSTGNC) People of Color center for community organizing, focusing on the New York City area. Through mobilization, education and capacity-building, we work for community wellness and progressive social and economic justice. Committed to struggling across differences, we seek to responsibly reflect, represent and serve our various communities. TITLE: Program Coordinator, Safe Outside the System (SOS) Collective HOURS: 40 Hours per week REPORTS TO: Director of Programs POSITION SUMMARY: Using creativity and ALP’s mission and guiding principles, this position will work collaboratively with volunteers and designated staff to coordinate, develop, and evaluate community organizing area(s) around building community safety to respond to and intervene on violence targeting LGBTSTGNC POC communities. This position includes supervision of volunteers and members, campaign development, oversight of program area(s), monitoring program budget and reporting and representing the organization to relevant funders. Responsibilities Include: Movement Building & Campaign Work - Represent the Safe Outside the System Collective & ALP political analysis on safety and violence at community events and venues; and work locally (and nationally as needed) with coalitions - Develop and maintain relationships with Central Brooklyn leaders and other relevant community partners - Work with relevant staff and volunteer leadership to develop and maintain long term grassroots community organizing campaigns and community actions, including bi-annual evaluation of campaign strategies - Develop and facilitate relevant curriculum for internal and external trainings related to organizing against police and hate violence and building movement work around community led safety strategies - Able to trouble shoot and coordinate rapid response around incidences of violence and policing within our communities, and with organizing partners and allies Advocacy - Support survivors of hate and police violence through advocacy, direct action and organizing strategies - Maintain knowledge of recent incidents of hate violence and police violence in the central Brooklyn area and advocate for community on an as needed basis - Advocating for LGBTSTGNC POC on issues of violence and safety with media, police, policy makers, and local city government, etc. Leadership Development - Support the leadership development of members directly affected by police and hate violence through developing skills based organizing trainings, regular check- ins, and facilitating an annual member retreat - Develop large scale community events to create visibility and education around hate and police violence in central Brooklyn - Implement curriculum that builds leadership skills in safety and security strategies (i.e., Safety & Security School and Safe Space Trainings) - Coordinate and develop outreach/recruitment plan for new members - Support current leadership through work planning and skills development - Supervise and coordinate supervision of program intern pool, including: coordination and completion of exit interviews, annual evaluation strategies. - Collaboration with other programs to build base and movement on shared political strategies organizational wide Safety & Security - Develop and coordinate safety systems in collaboration with Administrative & Program Staff within the organization to ensure safety of members and event participants including safety planning, security teams, and survivor support - Able to trouble shoot and develop strategies for creating safety at ALP events Administrative Responsibilities - Staff and coordinate logistics for program area meetings and events - Maintain collective structure and consensus decision-making within program area with relevant volunteers and staff - Monitor program budget - Maintain all administrative documentation (including expense tracking, quarterly/monthly reporting & evaluation) - Track and record relevant curriculum, training materials, agendas, contact and reference information - Supervise and coordinate supervision of relevant volunteers/members including: recruitment, screening and hiring, training, development and evaluation - Represent ALP and organizing area(s) to funders as requested by supervisor - Write reports and updates documenting progress of organizing area(s) - Represent the organization at meetings and events as requested by supervisor - Participate in staff meetings and collective staff responsibilities including organizational events - Other duties as assigned by supervisor - Weekly & Monthly Reporting Qualifications: Understanding of and commitment to ALP’s organizational mission, guiding principles and Lesbian Gay Bisexual Two Spirit Transgender and Gender Non- Conforming (LGBTSTGNC) People of Color (POC) issues. Proven ability working with multi-racial, multi-ethnic, multi-gendered, and intergenerational communities Strong working knowledge of LGBTSTGNC POC, LGBTSTGNC and POC communities, resources and services in the NYC Central Brooklyn area. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills and comfortable with navigating city officials, media, and community representatives with various beliefs on safety. Strong peer-counseling, conflict-management and crisis management skills. Public speaking on issues, policies and strategies impacting LGBTSTGNC Strong Facilitation Skills for small to large groups Able to coordinate large actions/events for 300 or more people Experience cultivating leadership and decision-making among community members; developing and leading grassroots community organizing campaigns; and solid interest/experience in movement-building strategies. Supervisory and managerial experience within a community-based organization, using consensus and other participatory decision-making models.
