On behalf of Karting Indoors Ltd, Clarendon Planning and Development Ltd submitted a Proposal of Application Notice (PAN ref 17/00002/PAN) Go-Kart Circuit to Council for “Proposed Roadside Service Area comprising petrol filling station, ancillary class 1, class 3 and class 7 uses, parking, landscaping and associated infrastructure at Land To The North of A1 Communication Mast Gladsmuir Junction, Gladsmuir, Tranent, East Lothian”. Raceland Karting is located directly adjacent to the Gladsmuir Junction of the A1 (See Figure 2).

The site extends to approximately 4.25 hectares in total. The site is relatively flat and is contained to the south by the slip road which leads off the A1 onto the B6363 with Longniddy to the north and Gladsmuir, and Tranent to the south. Policy DC1 advises on development in the countryside and supports changes of use of existing buildings, if they have an operational requirement for a countryside location, including tourism and leisure uses.

Existing Services

In terms of existing roadside services provision on the A1, the services provide the only formal service area on the Scottish side of the A1. Apart from the Musselburgh services, the closest dedicated roadside service area located on the A1 is in Berwick upon Tweed, 51.2 miles away (Figure 5).
