One of the objectives outlined in the City of Saint Paul’s 2009 Historic Preservation Plan is the development of historic contexts “for the most threatened resource types and areas,” including immigrant and ethnic communities (City of Saint Paul 2009:12). The primary objective for development of this Saint Paul African American Historic and Cultural Context Project (Context Study) was to lay a solid foundation for identification of key sites of historic significance and advancing preservation of these sites and the community’s stories.

    WEST VIRGINIA LEGISLATURE PAGE PROGRAM 2020 Published by the Clerk of the Senate and the Clerk of the House of Delegates Since the inception of the Page Program in 1993, its intent has been to provide a learning experience for youth in the legislative process. Our goal is to present educational and historical information to students participating as Pages during the Regular Session of the Legislature. Among other things in the Page Program Book, students will find an explanation of the rules governing the actions of Senators and Delegates as they deliberate legislation on the Chamber Floors of both houses. There is a diagram which covers the basic overview of how a bill moves through the legislative process on its way to becoming law. Students will also find lists of current Senators and Delegates, an overview of the Standing Committees of the Senate and House of Delegates and instructions on proper etiquette when on the Senate or House Chamber Floors. Maps are included to help students find their way around the Capitol Building. It is our hope that students serving as Pages find this experience enjoyable, informative and useful in their educational pursuits and that they come away with a better understanding of the legislative process and an interest in effecting positive change in our state.     The 36th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Militia July and August, 1863 Compiled by Robert E. Nale with significant contributions by Jean A. Suloff and the Mifflin County Historical Society On June 29, 1963, Albert W. Nale was enrolled in Company H, 36th Pennsylvania Militia Volunteers, to serve ninety days. He was discharged at Harrisburg, Pa. on August 11, 1863. It is stated that he was born in Mifflin County, was 18 years old, five feet eight inches tall, Dark? complexion, blue eyes, light hair and by occupation a farmer. Captain William A. Nelson was his company commander and Colonel Ralph McClay commanded the regiment at its discharge. Following is the material I have been able to find on the 36th PVM and on the other “emergency” troops formed by the state of Pennsylvania and other states when it appeared that the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia was about to invade Pennsylvania. A fuller treatment of this subject can be found in: Edwin B. Coddington; The Gettysburg Campaign: A Study in Command; Scribners; 1968. Chapter VI, “Pennsylvania Prepares for Invasion.” The reports of the various regimental commanders of the militia units are not in the Official Records and would have to be researched at the Pennsylvania archives in Harrisburg. This does not pretend to be a history of the regiment but rather a compilation of whatever information I could find about it. Charming mountain towns offer art galleries, historic museums, music, good food and lodging. The mountains and waters were vital for those first settlers as they made their homes and forged out a living. Today, they provide a great escape from a busy world. Many locals and tourists reap the joy and sustenance provided by the rivers and mountains as they revel in the abundant beauty of this part of West Virginia. The Potomac Highlands - bordering Maryland and Virginia - is a unique region with a distinct personality formed by a mixture of exuberance and practicality. First settled by Native Americans, it was primarily used as hunting grounds with some areas used for agricultural purposes. Later, it was inherited by the Tuscarora who migrated northward to New York and in 1712 became the sixth nation to formally be admitted to the Iroquois Confederacy. Following the French and Indian War, King George III feared more tension between Native Americans and settlers and issued the Proclamation of 1763 which prohibited settlement west of the Allegheny Mountains. Much of the Potomac Highlands is used for hunting and farming today. There were originally five counties of the Potomac Highlands: Grant, Hampshire, Hardy, Mineral, and Pendleton.
