I. Introduction & Background This project was initiated by the Duluth Heritage Preservation Commission in order to document the historic resources within an approximately 100-acre, 24-block area of the East End which was defined as follows: properties fronting North 21st Avenue East extending east to North 27th Avenue East and properties fronting East Superior Street on the south extending northward to include properties fronting on East Third Street. Two hundred and twelve residential buildings were documented (see annotated list of properties in Appendix A and maps of area in Appendix B.) The project was paid for by a Certified Local Government grant from the National Park Service through the State Historic Preservation Office at the Minnesota Historical Society and a cash match provided by the Duluth Preservation Alliance. Basic background research on the houses in the East End was begun years ago and can be almost entirely credited to the work of Maryanne Norton, currently a member of the Duluth Heritage Preservation Commission and volunteer research librarian at the Duluth Public Library. The project product is provided in two parts: the first is this report, which is a synthesis of the significant findings concerning the district; the second is a set of survey forms in which each individual property is documented with a written description, photograph and map. The second part is under separate cover. Notes: . For purposes of this report, the term “East End Neighborhood” or “East End” refers to the approximately 24-block area defined above, even though this neighborhood actually includes a more extensive area (the remainder of which is to be surveyed in a second phase).

MILLER McKIM AND PENNSYLVANIA ABOLITIONISM By IRA V. BROWN* J USTLY famous is the old Pennsylvania Abolition Society, founded in 1775 and, oddly enough, still going; its story has been written a number of times. Somewhat neglected, however, has been the history of Garrisonian abolitionism in this state, which found expression in the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society, founded in 1837 and disbanded in 1871. A useful avenue for ap- proaching this subject is through the life of James Miller McKim (1810-1874). In 1833 he attended the convention which founded the American Anti-Slavery Society, and he worked for several years as one of its traveling agents. For over twenty years (1840- 1862) he was a paid employee of the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society, serving essentially as its executive secretary and directing its day-to-day operations. For him the cause of the Negro was not a part-time hobby but a full-time vocation. It was, indeed, his bread and butter. Generally known simply as "Miller McKim," he was born on a farm near Carlisle, Pennsylvania, on November 14, 1810. Second of the eight children of James and Catherine Miller McKim, lie was of Scotch-Irish descent on his father's side and German on his mother's.' He was graduated from Dickinson College with the class of 1828. After studying medicine at the University of Penn- sylvania, he underwent a religious conversion and decided to prepare for the ministry. 1 APPENDIX D BIBLIOGRAPHIES OF ARCHITECTS, MCKIM, MEAD AND WHITE Charles Follen McKim (1847-1909 was born at Isabella Furnace, Chester County, Pennsylvania and was the anchor of the practice and the partner who enshrined the commitment to Beaux-Arts ideals. McKim studied Mining Engineering briefly at Harvard and in the summer of 1867 apprenticed under the noted architect, Russell Sturgis (1836-1909) in New York.1 From 1867-1870 McKim attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris returning to the United States in 1870. He brought with him the teachings of the École that combined ideals of beauty and clear planning to produce monumental architecture, and added Ruskinian precepts he had absorbed during this brief stay in Sturgis’ office – expressive massing, solid and straight forward construction and symbolic meaning enhanced by mural painting and decorative sculpture.2 Before McKim entered into a partnership with William B. Bigelow and William Mead in 1872 in New York City, he worked for a short time in the office of Henry Hobson Richardson (1838-1886), and became Richardson’s principal assistant working in the Spring of 1872 on the early studies for Trinity Church in Boston. William Rutherford Mead (1846-1928) was born in Brattleboro, Vermont and graduated from Amherst College in 1867. He worked for an engineer for a short time before entering the New York architectural office of Russell Sturgis as a paying student for instruction in architecture in 1867.
