Tautra and Hoklingen, Based on a Compilation of 14C-Dates
NGU BULLETIN, RESEARCH ARTICLE Age of the Younger Dryas ice-marginal substages in Mid-Norway – Tautra and Hoklingen, based on a compilation of 14C-dates Olsen, L.1, Høgaas, F.1 and Sveian, H.1 1 Geological Survey of Norway, P.O. Box 6315 Sluppen, N-7491 Trondheim The ice-marginal Tautra and Hoklingen Substages in the Trøndelag counties, Mid-Norway, have for a long time been referred to as of early and late Younger Dryas (YD) age, respectively. The basis for this is the regional distribution and morphological correlations of the associated moraines and a number of 14C- datings, mainly of marine shells, previously presented in different papers and map-sheets. In this overview article we present a collection of all 14C-dates associated (more or less accurately) with the Tautra and Hoklingen Substages, a number of 49 and 27 respectively. Using all these dates for a first approximation constrain the Tautra Substage to the age interval 13000 – 12500 cal yr BP and the Hoklingen Substage to 12180 –11600 cal yr BP. Improved accuracy of the age intervals can be obtained by further weighing of geology and stratigraphical positions of the dates. Omitting of dates considered to be slightly too old or too young to be strictly representative, have reduced the number of representative dates for Tautra to 24 and for Hoklingen to 22. The corresponding age intervals are now 12900 – 12620 cal yr BP and 12180 – 11760 cal yr BP, for Tautra and Hoklingen respectively. The Vedde Ash Bed, with established age 12066 ± 42 cal yr BP in western Norway, and dated near Trondheim to 12055 ± 35 cal yr BP, is recorded distally to the Tautra Substage and between the Tautra and Hoklingen Substage deposits, but not closer distally than 5 km and not proximally to the latter. -

A Rb-Sr age study from the Mosjøen unit, Helgeland Nappe Complex, and its bearing on the timing of tectonometamorphic events within the Uppermost Allochthon, Central Scandinavian Caledonides, Norway B. O. TØRUOBAKKEN & M. MICKELSON Tørudbakken, B. O. & Mickelson, M.: A Rb-Sr age study from the Mosjøen unit, Helgeland Nappe Complex and its bearing on the timing of tectonometamorphic events within the Uppermost Al lochthon, CentralScandinavian Caledonides, Norway.Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift, Vol. 66, pp. 263- 270. Oslo 1986. ISSN 0029-196X. The Mosjøen unit within the Helgeland Nappe Complex is made up of a polydeformed supracrustal sequence consisting mainly of greenschists, greenstones and layers of calcite and dolomite marbles, which have been intruded by large masses of igneous rocks ranging in composition from gabbroic to granitic. The main structural elements and the metamorphic maximum are related to the 02- deformation. The Mosjøen gabbro, yielding an igneous Rb-Sr mineral isochron age of 420 ± 8 m.y. (10 = .70412 ± .00003), was emplaced during the 02 event. A 433 ± 11 m.y. total rock Rb-Sr isochron was obtained for a granitic dyke crosscutting the 02 structures. The geochronological data are inter preted to indicate a Silurian age for the main tectonometamorphic event (02) in the Mosjøen unit. Previous geochronological studies from other parts of the Uppermost AUochthon demonstrate strong early Caledonian (late Cambrian to early Ordovician) metamorphism and deformation prior to Sil urian deformation. The present tectonostratigraphic sequence within the Uppermost Allochthon was established during the main Caledonian thrusting event in the late Silurian to early Oevonian. B. O. Tørudbakken & M. -

The Norwegian Millstone Landscape Millstones Are Among the Most Widespread and Abundant Artifacts from the Past
The Norwegian Millstone Landscape Millstones are among the most widespread and abundant artifacts from the past. They can be seen at farms, in gardens, in dry-stone walls and along streams long after the mill itself has disappeared. We intuitively know that there are many stories behind these well-crafted objects that have been so central in mankind’s history; however, most of these stories are lost. Particularly this applies to the ‘life’ of the millstone before it was put to use: the history of extensive quarry landscapes, craftsmanship, quality measures, millstone trade – aspects that collectively form a rich cultural landscape. This project seeks to shed new light on the physical and historical aspects of these multi- faceted landscapes through comprehensive surveys and interdisciplinary research. 1. Relevance to the call The Norwegian Millstone Landscape focuses on the historical narrative of quarrying, processing and trade of specific stone resources crucial to the production of the most fundamental food, flour. The shaping of extensive cultural landscapes by millstone quarrying provides a rich historical re- cord of the social, economic and political processes that surrounded food production for over 1500 years. Moreover, the consumption of millstones at local, regional and international scales represents conduits in the evolution of trade and social networks that grew around the millstone quarrying in- dustry, and that define an ‘extended millstone landscape’. Today, the socio-cultural and economic values of these millstone landscapes are at best greatly underestimated or, at worst, completely un- known. Undertaken by an interdisciplinary research team comprising the disciplines of geology, archaeology, history and landscape geography, this project addresses the proposal call by develop- ing methods for characterisation and reconstruction of the Norwegian millstone landscapes as a narrative that links the past with the present in a common heritage. -

The results show that InSAR provides data that is consistent with the settlement patterns expected and with the manual geodetic ground measurements for the dams of Akersvatn and Ajaure. The study shows that the InSAR methodology can give reliable settlement data with little variation and high temporal and spatial resolution for dams. The report has been written by Øyvind Espeseth Lier, Frano Cetinic, Ingvar Ekström, Tom Rune Lauknes, Yngvar Larsen. The conclusions in the report are the authors and does not necessarily represent the view of Energiforsk or the participants in Energiforsks dam safety development program. The project has been a part of Energiforsks dam safety R&D program with participation from hydro power companies and Svenska kraftnät. Stockholm November 2015 Cristian Andersson Authors acknowledgements The authors would like to thank the Norwegian and Swedish hydroelectric power industries for their support of this project. The participants Sira‐Kvina, Statkraft, Tromskraft and Vattenfall have contributed information about their dams, procedures in deformation measurement, and financial support for the project. Further, we wish to thank the industry organisations Energy Norway and Energiforsk of Sweden, as well as The Norwegian Space Centre for financial support. -
