The wild, beautiful and friendly World Heritage Area of Vegaøyan is an archipelago that counts roughly 6500 islands, islets and skerries. The livelihood of the thriving local community is based on fishing, fish-farming, agriculture and tourism.

UNESCO named Vegaøyan a World Heritage Area due to the islands’ striking scenery and cultural traditions. In a wharfside building in the village of Nes, you will find the world’s only Eider Duck Museum (E-huset). The fascinating exhibition documents the islanders’ unique tradition and their role as gu- ardians of the migratory birds that nest on Vega. For more information on the World Heritage Area, please see the ad on the back cover of this guide.

Naturally, Vega has much more to offer visitors. How about joining a moose safari, a culinary adventure at the shoreline, guided archaeological and bio- logical field trips, going kayaking or sailing in a traditional Nordland boat, visiting the coastal farm Vega Kystgård, hiking the trails or cycling the lightly traf- ficked roads?
