Alfred Russel Wallace was born on January 8th, 1823, near the town of Usk in Monmouthshire, to Thomas Vere Wallace (died May 1843) and Mary Anne Wallace (née Greenell; died 15 November 1868). The family moved to Hertford, Essex, in about 1826. Their father, originally a gentleman of independent means and a non-practicing solicitor, lost money in unsuccessful financial speculation and took up a series of low-paid jobs, and the family moved several times for economic reasons. 1 When Mrs Greenell, Mary Wallace's stepmother, died in 1826, the family moved to her home- town, Hertford, in Essex. Here ARW met another child, George Silk, who became a lifelong friend and correspondent. The Wallaces lived first in a house in Andrews Street, next at an address in Old Cross, a short distance away. Other members of the family included Aunt Wilson, Mary Anne Wallace's sister, wife of Thomas Wilson, lawyer, who in 1826 lived in Dulwich. Thomas Wilson was controlling trustee of a Greenell family legacy which paid for, among other things, John Wallace's board, and held money in trust for the other Wallace children. When Thomas Wilson was declared bankrupt in 1834, the legacy became involved and the Wallace's income was drastically reduced. ARW was educated at Hertford Grammar School and then Hertford School where in his final year he was a pupil-teacher. In 1837, aged 14, he went to London where he stayed with his brother John (an apprentice builder) and became an apprentice surveyor as pupil to his brother William. His parents moved to Rawdon Cottage, Hoddesdon, in the same year. ARW began collecting insect specimens found during his surveying trips, and became increasingly interested in natural history. In 1848 he went with fellow enthusiast H W Bates to the Amazon on a collecting expedition, hoping to make a living as a collector of natural history specimens. His brother Herbert (usually known by his second name, Edward) subsequently joined him, but died of Yellow Fever in 1851. ARW returned to England in 1851, losing his journals and collection of specimens when the ship in which he was sailing caught fire and sank. Still hoping to make a living as a collector and naturalist, ARW sailed for Malaysia in 1854 with a young assistant, Charles Allen. He spent eight years in the Malay Archipelago, collecting birds and insects and studying and writing on the local flora, fauna and people. It was here that he began writing scientific papers, formed his ideas on the natural selection and geographical distribution of species, and began corresponding with Charles Darwin. At a meeting of the Linnean Society on July 1st, 1858, Wallace's paper "On the Tendency of Varieties to Depart Indefinitely from the Original Type", written in early 1858 while he was at Ternate in the Moluccas, was presented jointly with an unpublished essay of 1844 on the subject by Darwin. ARW returned to England in 1862, and subsequently published widely on a variety of scientific and other subjects, and gave public lectures. He travelled to America and Canada for a lecture tour in 1886-1887. He was member of a number of scientific societies, was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1892 and was awarded the Order of Merit by the King in 1908. ARW married Annie Mitten, the daughter of pharmacist and bryologist William Mitten, in about 1866. They had three children, Herbert Spencer (1867-1874), William Greenell (born 1871) and Violet (born 1869). ARW died at home in Broadstone, Dorset, on 8 November, 1913. Shermer, Michael (Oxford 2002) In Darwin's Shadow: The Life and Science of Alfred Russel Wallace. A collection of Wallace's papers was purchased for £160,500 by The Natural History Museum after being exclusively offered to it at the beginning of 2001 by the owners, Mr A John Wallace and Mr Richard R Wallace (Alfred Russel Wallace's grandsons) and Mrs A John Wallace (Audrey Wallace). Funding was provided by Heritage Lottery Fund, Natural History Museum Enhancement Grant Fund, Clothworkers' Foundation, Goldsmiths' Company's Charities, Steel Charitable Trust, Idlewild Trust, Mrs Janet Dwek, Mr Anthony Hoare, Rayne Foundation, The Lumpkin Foundation, Mrs Susan Lockhart, Mrs Tania Chislett and Mr James Colyer-Fergusson. The papers were taken into the custody of the NHM on 30 January 2002. It is intended that the library staff using UNICORN software will catalogue publications. The MSS, (including annotated printed matter etc as described above) which are part of the General Library MSS collection, were catalogued in the Archives. Some of the books and MSS in the collection relate to specimens held in the Museum's collections. The acquisition also augments the Museum's existing Wallace holdings; for instance the new material reveals Wallace's post-publication thought and reaction to the work of others, notably Darwin. 3 WP1 Correspondence 1835-1913 Correspondence between Alfred Russel Wallace and his friends, mother and siblings, wife Annie Wallace née Mitten, in-laws, children, colleagues, publishers and readers, with some early correspondence on family affairs between his mother and other members of the family. There is also 1 sheet of lined paper folded and written on two sides in an unknown hand with notes on the contents of some of the letters (see WP1/1/152). Letters from Alfred Russel Wallace are typically addressed ''My dear Willie'' or ''My dear Will'' and typically signed ''your affectionate Papa''. Letters are generally in date order though some added later are out of sequence including 52 letters previously loose or arranged by subject, almost certainly by or for James Marchant c. 1915; these records have been put in date order at the end of the sequence, see WP1/1/153-201. Notes: The letters were in a small, non-archival box when delivered to the Museum. Only the label, which may have some historical value, has been kept. See old ref WP1/1/139. The letters have been placed in acid-free folders as a bundle.

The paper used butterflies of the family Papilionidae as a model system for testing evolutionary hypotheses, and included a revision of the Papilionidae of the region, as well as the description of some 20 new species. Wallace argued that the Papilionidae were the most advanced butterflies, against some of his colleagues such as Bates and Trimen who had claimed that the Nymphalidae were more advanced because of their possession of vestigial forelegs. In a very important section, Wallace laid out what is perhaps the clearest Darwinist definition of the differences between species, geographic subspecies, and local ‘varieties.’ He also discussed the relationship of these taxonomic categories to what is now termed ‘reproductive isolation.’ While accepting reproductive isolation as a cause of species, he rejected it as a definition. Instead, species were recognized as forms that overlap spatially and lack intermediates. However, this morphological distinctness argument breaks down for discrete polymorphisms, and Wallace clearly emphasised the conspecificity of non-mimetic males and female Batesian mimetic morphs in Papilio polytes, and also in P.

    Search | Glossary | Home << previous | next > > Natural Selection: Charles Darwin & Alfred Russel Wallace The genius of Darwin (left), the way in which he suddenly turned all of biology upside down in 1859 with the publication of the Origin of Species , can sometimes give the misleading impression that the theory of evolution sprang from his forehead fully formed without any precedent in scientific history. But as earlier chapters in this history have shown, the raw material for Darwin's theory had been known for decades. Geologists and paleontologists had made a compelling case that life had been on Earth for a long time, that it had changed over that time, and that many species had become extinct. At the same time, embryologists and other naturalists studying living animals in the early 1800s had discovered, sometimes unwittingly, much of the A visit to the Galapagos Islands in 1835 helped Darwin best evidence for Darwin's formulate his ideas on natural selection. He found theory. several species of finch adapted to different environmental niches. The finches also differed in beak shape, food source, and how food was captured. Pre-Darwinian ideas about evolution It was Darwin's genius both to show how all this evidence favored the evolution of species from a common ancestor and to offer a plausible mechanism by which life might evolve. Lamarck and others had promoted evolutionary theories, but in order to explain just how life changed, they depended on speculation. Typically, they claimed that evolution was guided by some long-term trend. Lamarck, for example, thought that life strove over time to rise from simple single-celled forms to complex ones.

    PREFACE This book arose out of a range of interests that combined to move me in a direction I had not anticipated, but found intriguing. For nearly a decade I had spent time researching and writing about how curriculum materials in the form of school textbooks found their way into classrooms, as well as exploring their political and ideological construction. I was interested in how school history, social studies and citizenship textbooks help shape, and are, in turn, shaped by, ideological and socio-political norms, traditions and values. I combined this work with a lifelong interest in the history of education and its cultural and sociological origins. In 2013 I committed myself to moving beyond the analysis of school textbooks to exploring an alternative form of curriculum materials in the guise of early-twentieth- century children’s magazines. While I had no interest in being sucked into the often vacuous quagmire of postmodernist theoretical gymnastics, with its dreary and tiresome massacring of language, I was interested in how children’s magazines were powerful weapons in the ideological and political construction of what of the past was remembered and how it was remembered. My interest lay in exploring how SAMPLEthe narratives that constitute a nation’s past present a powerful moral authority. I wanted to focus upon how they did not simply tell stories, but stories that contained discourses from which cultural and ideological meanings were manufactured. Originally I concentrated upon a series of articles I wanted to write on the manner in which The Children’s Newspaper, which Arthur Mee edited between 1919 and 1943, imagined English national identity, Australia and Aboriginal Australians.

    SAMPLE ARTICLES FROM THE GLADSTONE REVIEW As it is likely that several readers of this e-journal have discovered the existence of the New Gladstone Review for the first time, I thought it would be helpful to give more idea of the style adopted by providing some examples of articles that were published during 2017. I begin with the introduction on page 1 of the January 2017 issue, and thereafter add seven articles published in subsequent issues. THE GLADSTONE REVIEW January 2017 a monthly e-journal Informal commentary, opinions, reviews, news, illustrations and poetry for bookish people of philanthropic inclination INTRODUCTION This is the first issue of the successor to the Gladstone Books Newsletter, the publication which was launched in November 2015 in association with the Gladstone Books shop in Southwell. The shop was named after William Gladstone, who became an MP for near-by Newark when only 23 years old in 1832, and was subsequently Liberal Prime Minister on four occasions until his death in 1898. It was Gladstone's bibliophilia, rather than his political achievements, that led to adoption of this name when I first started selling second-hand books in Newark in 2002. For he was an avid reader of the 30,000 books he assembled in his personal library, which became the nucleus of the collection in St Deiniol’s library in north Wales, and which is his most tangible legacy. I retained the name when moving the business to Lincoln in 2006, and since May 2015, to the shop in Southwell. * Ben Mepham * Of course, Gladstone Books is now back in Lincoln!     SABRINA TIMES December 2016 OPEN UNIVERSITY GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY SEVERNSIDE BRANCH Branch Organisers Report Hello everyone, We had an excellent turn-out for our Day of Lectures on 3rd December at the YMCA Conference Centre in Newport. Everyone who came along enjoyed three excellent speakers on the diverse subjects of modern geophysical survey methods; the exploration of Precambrian oil in Oman; and Lichenometry in Norway. A new subject to many of us, we discovered that Lichenometry is the use of lichen to determine the age of exposed rock, and Hazel Trenbirth described the work done in dating the retreat of Norwegian glaciers using this technique. Peter Brabham described the variety of non-invasive techniques now widely used to build up a picture of what lies beneath the surface of a site requiring a detailed shallow survey. During his fascinating talk on oil exploration in Oman, Neil Frewin mentioned a museum that had recently opened at Kimmeridge in Dorset. It is called The Etches Collection, and it houses a large collection of Jurassic marine fossils discovered in the Kimmeridge Clay by Steve Etches over a 30-year period . The museum also features CGI screens on the ceiling that give visitors the impression of being underwater 150 million years ago in the company of extinct creatures. The Etches Collection is now on my list of places I must visit in 2017! You can explore the website at http://theetchescollection.org/home. If you attended the Day of Lectures, I would welcome any comments (good or bad) about this new venue. In the past we have been fortunate in being able to use a conference room at Cardiff Museum free of charge, which obviously reduces the cost of the event to members, but the Museum wanted to charge us quite a lot this year.
