The German Association of Engineers (VDI) has developed guidelines for the standardized monitoring of Lepidoptera describing the use of light traps for adult moths, transect counts for adult butterflies, and visual search for larvae. The guidelines suggest recording adults of Crambid Snout Moths during transect counts in addition to butterflies, and present detailed protocols for the visual search of larvae. -

It focuses on identification of supercooling point, survival of various low temperature regimes and composition of cryoprotective substances. Results are presented in the context of distributional limits of individual species, their habitat requirements and their potential endangerment due to environmental and habitat changes. Colias Study
Distribution analysis of two similar Colias species in the Rhône département of France Pale Clouded Yellow ( Colias hyale ) and Berger’s Clouded Yellow ( Colias alfacariensis ) are acknowledged by the majority of experienced lepidopterists as being inseparable from observations of imagos in the natural position in the wild. Whilst uppersides may be glimpsed or photographed during courtship rituals, otherwise the butterflies always settle with wings closed. With the forewing raised it is usually possible to separate females from males, but with the forewing tucked down it may not even be possible to separate from a third species, Clouded Yellow (Colias crocea .) In flight, confusion with C.crocea is eradicated for all males and most females as the orange-yellow uppersides are easily distinguishable. A small percentage of females of C.crocea have whitish uppersides, form helice , and are thus prone to be identified as females of either C.hyale or C.alfacariensis . From a photograph of C.hyale/C.alfacariensis with wings closed, the only frequently used criterion for identification concerns the shape of the outer margin of the forewing to the apex; an ensemble considered as overall more rounded for C.alfacariensis . There is much debate as to whether this feature is reliable in the identification of random individuals. Netting butterflies and manipulating in the hand to scrutinize markings and colouration of uppersides is also supposed to provide identification clues. However, doubt will inevitably subsist in the analysis of random individuals. It should also be noted that a butterfly should not be handled unless the release of the insect unharmed can be guaranteed. -

Analyzing life history traits of butterfly communities and faunas frequently reveals a generalist-specialist continuum as the main gradient, where species using wide arrays of resources, with good dispersal ability and fast development are distinguished from those using specialised resources, having limited dispersal ability and developing slowly. To ascertain the validity of the generalist- specialist approach for an intermediately species-rich Central European fauna, we analyzed ten life history traits for 136 species of butterflies currently occurring in the Czech Republic, using principal correspondence analysis (PCA) and controlling for phylogeny. The main gradient extracted indeed revealed a generalist-specialist continuum, while the gradient perpendicular to the main axis distin- guished between small-bodied polyvoltine species feeding on small herbaceous plants and large-bodied monovoltine species feeding on grasses or woody plants. We coin “constrained voltinism continuum” for the second gradient and argue that it reflects the effect of anti-herbivore strategies of larval host plants on butterfly development. -

A primary insight into the molecular phylogeny of Colias FABRICIUS, 1807 (Pieridae, Coliadinae) complex of South America Alexander V. Lomas del Campestre, Leon 37150, GTO., Mexico [email protected] Abstract The data on molecular phylogeny of the Colias FABRICIUS complex of South America (SA), obtained via barcoding a mitochondrial part of genome, are reported. Barcoding was trialed employing the Barcoding of Life Database platform and comprised 93 specimens of SA Colias species and 2 outgroup specimens (C. philodice guatemalena RÖBER from North America). It is established that Colias species from SA form a single monophyletic clade, characterized by notable interspecific mutational divergences (3.5–4.5%) and moderate intraspecific ones (0.3–0.9%). It also reveals the occurrence of three well-established, or notably diverged genetically, species (C. dimera DOUBLEDAY & HEWITSON, C. vauthierii GUERIN-MENEVILLE, and C. alticola GODMANN & SALVIN stat. nov., the latter re-raised to specific level), plus a complex of three ‘emerging’ species (C. lesbia FABRICIUS, C. euxanthe FELDER & FELDER, and C. flaveola BLANCHARD), weakly differentiated in mitochondrial part of genome, with intersecting haplotypes. Furthermore, it disregards the specific status of taxa weberbaueri STRAND, mossi ROTHSCHILD, nigerrima FASSL, erika LAMAS, blameyi JÖRGENSEN, and mendozina BREYER, as certain evidences are being brought to consider them as subspecies of a clinal type of ‘super-species’ C. flaveola s. lat. The clade formed by all SA Colias is found to be sister to the clade that comprises all Colias species occurring outside the region (i.e. in Eurasia, North America, and Africa). -

Species richness declined along the urbanization gradient. Species that were most common in the whole city were Aglais io, Pieris napi and Pieris rapae. The highest number of species was recorded in ruderal sites and in parks, while species richness was low on cultivated lawns. We classify also butterflies recorded in Lodz using ecological attributes, describing all stages of their life cycle and host plants. On the basis of this analysis, we distinguished seven ecological groups of species within Lodz. The purpose of this application, under Article 23.9.3 of the Code, is to conserve the specific name alfacariensis Ribbe, 1905, which is in widespread use for a butterfly species of the genus Colias Fabricius, 1807 (family PIERIDAE). The name is threatened by three little-used senior subjective synonyms, Colias hyale sareptensis Alphéraky, 1875, Colias hyale alba Rühl, 1893 and Colias hyale meridionalis Krulikowsky, 1903. It is proposed that C. alfacariensis is given precedence over the other three names whenever it and any of the others are considered to be synonyms. Keywords. The Diary of William Darwin Fox: 1824 to 1826: Part 2
Epilogue This has been the story of two “Victorian” gentlemen. Gentlemen that seem, in many ways, to characterise the age and its ambiguities. Both aspired to be country clergymen, following up at the same time, their bent to be naturalists. And if it was not for the offer of passage on the second voyage on the Beagle, Darwin might have ended up there. Yet the offer of the Beagle voyage did materialise and changed Darwin for the rest of his life. He went away on the voyage as a young man, accept- ing, like Fox, the norms of his upbringing and the societal pressures to fit into one of the avenues of professional life available in early nineteenth century England. The long and exacting voyage somehow acted as a trigger, which set Darwin on another course. Yet this reasoning is not sufficient to explain the man. Many other men were recruited into similar trips by the British Navy, at this time, to go out and map the world, both in geographical and natural history ways: T H Huxley and J D Hooker, amongst them. And of these, only Darwin saw the path ahead and stuck to it. And, of course, A R Wallace, who came from a very different stratum of society with a different background of experience, also came to very similar conclusions about organic evolution. William Darwin Fox on the other hand, Darwin’s second cousin and from very similar bloodstock, saw his role in life as the country parson and stuck to that through thick and thin.
