To This day, the Juliusspital foundation still runs a hospital, a nursing home as well as a number of institutions of public need. The proceeds from the wine estate support these social tasks. The wine estate owns vineyards all across the Franconian area and also in each of the top five sites: Würzburger Stein, Randersackerer Pfülben, Iphöfer Julius-Echter-Berg, Rödelseer Küchenmeister and Echerndorfer Lump. Silvaner is the predominant grape variety, but classic grape varieties like Riesling or Pinot grapes are also cultivated. The different types of soil and micro-climates of the sites are the reason for the variety and individuality of the Juliusspital wines. The ecologically compatible cultivation in our vineyards (which requires a great deal of hand labour) and the fact that we strictly limit our yields further accentuate the character of our wines. The wines are fermented in stainless steel or in big wooden barrels. Some of the oak barrels in the historical cellar are over a century old. In the end, our wines are mostly bottled in the “Bocksbeutel”, the traditional bottle of the Franconian region. Intense wines, one of each ripeness category, intended for gastronomy, listed in many top restaurants.” 2019 Mosel-Riesling Beerenauslese edelsüss Alcohol 12,0 Vol%, Residual sugar 81,9 g/l, Acidity 8,9 g/l. General: The Beerenauslese is the next step up from the Auslese level a berry selection from fully ripe and sundried Riesling grapes, selected on site, berry for berry. All our grape pickers are briefed right at the beginning of harvest to view and sort the right berries already in the vineyards into the seperate boxes. Collected from the Niederberg-Helden, a single vineyard site (designated an Erste Lage or “First Growth“ site). The vines were planted in the 1920’s and are mostly ungrafted. At 70% steepness of the slope the midday sun is positioned almost vertically above the vines and the Mosel River reflects the sun with mirror-like intensity. This causes the dehydration of the grapes to the state of raisins. In 2011 our Beerenauslese reached an Oechsle level of an incredible 160° (Specific gravity 160° = 1,160 kg/l or 36,5 ° Brix). It fermented to 13,5% Alcohol and had still 111 g/l residual sugar. The mazeration time in the small hydropress takes 1–2 hours to stimulate the natural aroma extraction. Sedimentation is 12 hours then the juice is moved to the fermenter. Vinification is in a small stainless steel tank at 15° C. Fermentation lasts 12 weeks. After racking the wine matures on its fine lees until the diatomaceous earth filtration at the end of March.

Mosel Fine Wines “The Independent Review of Mosel Riesling” By Jean Fisch and David Rayer Weingut von Othegraven (Kanzem – Saar) Dr. Heidi Kegel reported that the vegetative cycle was as long in 2008 as in 2007 (around 120-130 days) and also Andreas Barth, the cellar master since 2004, was positively surprised at how the wines developed, showing fruity and mineral characteristics. He mentioned that, although the sugar levels remained essentially unchanged throughout October, the aromatic profile of the grapes improved quite significantly in the course of the month. In his eyes, the key to the success in 2008 was to wait just the few extra days to start the harvest. Therefore the Estate started cautiously on October 15 with a pre-harvest. The main harvest was only launched a week later and lasted until November 11. Yields were moderate at 45 hl/ha, i.e. at around the same levels as in 2007. Small quantities of botrytis-affected grapes were harvested, but most grapes were clean. In addition the Estate managed to harvest 105 liters of Eiswein in the Kanzemer Altenberg on December 28. The fermentation proved to be slow and long this year. It was a tricky vintage, and much attention was needed. As done since the vintage 2006, the Estate decided to ferment all wines, including the dry ones, with ambient yeasts. The Estate started some experiments with wooden casks in the vintage 2008 vintage (traditionally, all wines are made in stainless steel). One 1,400 liters wooden cask is now used for each of its three GG bottlings (Wiltinger Kupp, Ockfener Bockstein and Kanzemer Altenberg) to be released in September.

VINTAGE 2019 Reviewed by Stephan Reinhardt, Issue Date 13th of August 2020, The Wine Advocate Weingut Eva Fricke 2019 Lorcher Krone Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese Rating: 100 The 2019 Lorcher Krone Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese offers a concentrated, very intense bouquet of fresh pineapple and candied lemon aromas intermixed with notes of sage, lavender, black bread, black pepper and rubbed lime rind. Very sweet and intense on the palate but at the same time piquant and racy, this is a perfectly lifted and refreshing TBA with a lot of terroir expression. It is an incredibly frisky, salty and textured sweet wine like only very few TBAs you can find today. Again, I don't pick up much sulfur here. Tasted in May 2020. Extremely rare. Drink Date: 2030 – 2080. Weingut Eva Fricke 2019 Lorcher Kapellenberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese Rating: 99 The 2019 Lorcher Kapellenberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese offers a bright and highly finessed yet concentrated raisin and candied lemon aroma intertwined with notes of mandarin, pineapple, waffle with confectioner's sugar and cooked strawberries. Round and intense but also finessed and delicate on the palate, this TBA is hugely refined and even salty, amazingly clear and bright and finishes with piquant, highly stimulating salinity and finesse. A fantastic Rheingau TBA from quartzite soils. Tasted in May 2020. Weingut Eva Fricke 2019 Lorcher Schlossberg Riesling Beerenauslese Rating: 97 From a mix of green, golden, overripe and violet berries picked in the second half of September, the 2019 Lorcher Schlossberg Beerenauslese in concentrated and precise on the spicy nose that comes along as precise as an ice wine, with concentrated yet fine fruit and a touch of honey.
