Resumen. – Contribución de diferentes tipos de bosque a la comunidad de aves en un paisaje de sabana en Colombia. – La heterogeneidad del paisaje es particularmente importante en paisajes frag- mentados, donde cada fragmento contribuye a la biodiversidad del paisaje. Este aspecto ha sido menos estudiado en paisajes naturalmente fragmentados, comparado con aquellos fragmentados por activ- idades antrópicas. Estudiamos las sabanas de la región de la Orinoquia en Colombia, un paisaje natural- mente fragmentado. El objetivo fue determinar la contribución de tres tipos de bosque de un mosaico de bosque-sabana (bosque de altillanura, bosques riparios anchos, bosques riparios angostos), a la avi- fauna del paisaje. Nos enfocamos en la estructura de la comunidad de aves, analizando la riqueza de especies y la composición de los gremios tróficos, las asociaciones de hábitat, y la movilidad relativa de las especies. Usando observaciones, grabaciones, y capturas con redes de niebla, registramos 109 especies. Los tres tipos del paisaje mostraron diferencias importantes, y complementariedad con respecto a la composición de las aves. Los análisis de gremios tróficos, movilidad, y asolación de hábitat reforzaron las diferencias entre los tipos de bosque. El bosque de altillanura presentó la mayor riqueza de aves, y a la vez también la mayor cantidad de especies únicas. -
Peru: from the Cusco Andes to the Manu
The critically endangered Royal Cinclodes - our bird-of-the-trip (all photos taken on this tour by Pete Morris) PERU: FROM THE CUSCO ANDES TO THE MANU 26 JULY – 12 AUGUST 2017 LEADERS: PETE MORRIS and GUNNAR ENGBLOM This brand new itinerary really was a tour of two halves! For the frst half of the tour we really were up on the roof of the world, exploring the Andes that surround Cusco up to altitudes in excess of 4000m. Cold clear air and fantastic snow-clad peaks were the order of the day here as we went about our task of seeking out a number of scarce, localized and seldom-seen endemics. For the second half of the tour we plunged down off of the mountains and took the long snaking Manu Road, right down to the Amazon basin. Here we traded the mountainous peaks for vistas of forest that stretched as far as the eye could see in one of the planet’s most diverse regions. Here, the temperatures rose in line with our ever growing list of sightings! In all, we amassed a grand total of 537 species of birds, including 36 which provided audio encounters only! As we all know though, it’s not necessarily the shear number of species that counts, but more the quality, and we found many high quality species. New species for the Birdquest life list included Apurimac Spinetail, Vilcabamba Thistletail, Am- pay (still to be described) and Vilcabamba Tapaculos and Apurimac Brushfnch, whilst other montane goodies included the stunning Bearded Mountaineer, White-tufted Sunbeam the critically endangered Royal Cinclodes, 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Peru: From the Cusco Andes to The Manu 2017 www.birdquest-tours.com These wonderful Blue-headed Macaws were a brilliant highlight near to Atalaya. -

Lowther, Field Museum Brood parasitism is an awkward term to describe an interaction between two species in which, as in predator-prey relationships, one species gains at the expense of the other. Brood parasites "prey" upon parental care. Victimized species usually have reduced breeding success, partly because of the additional cost of caring for alien eggs and young, and partly because of the behavior of brood parasites (both adults and young) which may directly and adversely affect the survival of the victim's own eggs or young. About 1% of all bird species, among 7 families, are brood parasites. The 5 species of brood parasitic “cowbirds” are currently all treated as members of the genus Molothrus. Host selection is an active process. Not all species co-occurring with brood parasites are equally likely to be selected nor are they of equal quality as hosts. Rather, to varying degrees, brood parasites are specialized for certain categories of hosts. Brood parasites may rely on a single host species to rear their young or may distribute their eggs among many species, seemingly without regard to any characteristics of potential hosts. Lists of species are not the best means to describe interactions between a brood parasitic species and its hosts. Such lists do not necessarily reflect the taxonomy used by the brood parasites themselves nor do they accurately reflect the complex interactions within bird communities (see Ortega 1998: 183-184). Host lists do, however, offer some insight into the process of host selection and do emphasize the wide variety of features than can impact on host selection. -

Colombia: from the Choco to Amazonia
This gorgeous Cinnamon Screech Owl narrowly missed being our bird-of-the-trip! (Pete Morris) COLOMBIA: FROM THE CHOCO TO AMAZONIA 9/12/15 JANUARY – 5/11 FEBRUARY 2016 LEADER: PETE MORRIS Well, this was the first time that we had run our revised Colombia With a Difference tour – now aptly-named Colombia: From the Choco to Amazonia. Complete with all the trimmings, which included pre-tour visits to San Andres and Providencia, the Sooty-capped Puffbird Extension, and the post tour Mitu Extension, we managed to amass in excess of 850 species. Travelling to the Caribbean, the Pacific Coast, the High Andes and the Amazon all in one trip really was quite an experience, and the variety and diversity of species recorded, at times, almost overwhelming! Picking out just a few highlights from such a long list is difficult, but here’s just an 1 BirdQuest Tour Report:Colombia: From the Choco to Amazonia www.birdquest-tours.com The exquisite Golden-bellied Starfrontlet, one of a number of stunning hummers and our bird-of-the-trip! (Pete Morris) appetizer! The islands of San Andres and Providencia both easily gave up their endemic vireos – two Birdquest Lifers! The Sooty-capped Puffbirds were all we hoped for and a male Sapphire-bellied Hummingbird a bonus! A sneaky trip to Sumapaz National Park yielded several Green-bearded Helmetcrests and Bronze-tailed Thorn- bill. On the main tour we saw a huge number of goodies. Blue-throated, Dusky and Golden-bellied Starfrontlets (all stunners!); the rare Humboldt’s Sapphire was a Birdquest lifer; nightbirds included Black-and-white Owl and White-throated, Cinnamon and Choco Screech Owls; and a random selection of other favourites included Gorgeted Wood Quail, the much appreciated Brown Wood Rail, Beautiful Woodpecker, Chestnut-bellied Hum- mingbird, Black Inca, the brilliant Rusty-faced Parrot, Citron-throated Toucan, Recurve-billed Bushbird, Urrao Antpitta, Niceforo’s and Antioquia Wrens, the amazing Baudo Oropendola, Crested and Sooty Ant Tanagers and the rare Mountain Grackle. -

Amazon Cruise - Primates & Parrots Trip Report and Systematic List 28 April – 10 May 2019 Text by Chris Collins with assistance from Regina Ribeiro. Photos by Chris Collins except where indicated. Introduction This was the second of our “world first” Amazon Primates and Parrots wildlife cruises and like the inaugural trip in 2018, the expedition was a great success with many poorly known species being seen. We spent most of the time exploring the remote rainforests south of the Amazon between Manaus and Santarem (with a couple of days north of this mighty river towards the end of the tour) giving us access to the home ranges of many highly localised primates. For many of the group, the marmosets were amongst the most desired species and we had considerably success finding five species including Golden-white Tassel-ear, Maués, Sateré and Santarem. We were equally successful with the titi monkeys and our sightings included Lake Baptista, Red-bellied, Chestnut-bellied and Ashy. With other primates including Martin’s Bare-faced Tamarin, Red-nosed Saki, Spix’s Howler, Spix’s Black-headed Uacari, the total for the main tour was 26 species, with a further five being seen on the extension to Uacari Lodge. The mammals found also included other families than just primates and we had good views of Brown-throated and Linnaeus’s Two-toed Sloths, as well as Brazilian Porcupine and more or less daily sightings of both Tucuxi and Amazon River Dolphin. Indeed, for some of the group our visit to a site near Manaus where it was possible to ‘swim’ with wild dolphins was a major highlight of the tour. -

And, as I was enjoying the view from the plane’s window, I was wondering how to start an introductory paragraph highlighting the best experiences and birds of our Manu Biosphere Reserve tour. I found it to be a difficult task, not only because we came across an impressive number of habitats, but also because we saw so many wonderful birds! As I was still on that international flight, it didn’t take me long to figure out that I should, instead, divide this Field Report into four major areas and describe the amazing experiences and wonderful birds we enjoyed in each one. With that in mind, here we go! THE HIGH ANDES – PUNA Once we landed in Cusco, and after a wonderful breakfast, our tour started in the Huarcapay Lagoon, where 3 individuals of the rarely encountered Chilean Flamingo were observed. Here, we also saw Puna, Yellow-billed and Cinnamon teals, Spot-winged Pigeon, a vocal Plumbeous Rail, the beautiful White-tufted Grebe, several Andean Gulls, the secretive Rusty-fronted Canastero (endemic to Peru), and the Rufous-naped Ground-Tyrant, which is easily camouflaged by its gravel color.
