Catalog 2018 General.Pdf
TERRY’S COMICS Welcome to Catalog number twenty-one. Thank you to everyone who ordered from one or more of our previous catalogs and especially Gold and Platinum customers. Please be patient when you call if we are not here, we promise to get back to you as soon as possible. Our normal hours are Monday through Friday 8:00AM-4:00PM Pacific Time. You can always send e-mail requests and we will reply as soon as we are able. This catalog has been expanded to include a large DC selection of comics that were purchased with Jamie Graham of Gram Crackers. All comics that are stickered below $10 have been omitted as well as paperbacks, Digests, Posters and Artwork and many Magazines. I also removed the mid-grade/priced issue if there were more than two copies, if you don't see a middle grade of an issue number, just ask for it. They are available on the regular web-site www.terryscomics.com. If you are looking for non-key comics from the 1980's to present, please send us your want list as we have most every issue from the past 35 years in our warehouse. Over the past two years we have finally been able to process the bulk of the very large DC collection known as the Jerome Wenker Collection. He started collecting comic books in 1983 and has assembled one of the most complete collections of DC comics that were known to exist. He had regular ("newsstand" up until the 1990's) issues, direct afterwards, the collection was only 22 short of being complete (with only 84 incomplete.) This collection is a piece of Comic book history. -

We have been fortunate to still have acquired some amazing comics during this past challenging year. What is left from the British Collection of Pre-code Horror/Sci-Fi selection, has been regraded and repriced according to the current market. 2021 started off great with last year’s catalog and the 1st four Comic book conventions. Unfortunately, after mid- March all the conventions have been cancelled. We still managed to do a couple of mini conventions between lockdowns and did a lot of buying on a trip through several states as far east as Ohio. -
Slapstick and Self-Reflexivity in George Herriman's Krazy
Slapstick and Self-Reflexivity in George Herriman‘s Krazy Kat BEN JUERS 1 Between 1912 and 1944, a ‗meteoric burlesk drama‘ unfolds in the comic strip section of the newspapers belonging to Randolph Hearst‘s King Features Syndicate.1 It is enacted over four panels on weekdays and an entire page on Sundays. The cast is made up of an androgynous and racially ambiguous cat named Krazy, an unsentimental mouse named Ignatz, and a well-meaning yet misguided bulldog named Offissa Pupp. Together, they form a love triangle, around which is generated a plot that remains ostensibly the same over the years. Ignatz throws a brick at Krazy, seeking to punish ‗that fool kat‘ for her naïveté.2 Krazy misinterprets the brick as a token of affection, and eagerly awaits the ‗messidge of love‘ from ‗dahlink‘ Ignatz, her ‗li‘l ainjil‘.3 Offissa Pupp, jealous of the relationship between Krazy and Ignatz, pursues and jails Ignatz for his brick-throwing misdemeanours. Innovative Ignatz persists, devising ways to elude Pupp and deliver the brick to Krazy‘s head. He drops it from hot air balloons, flings it through peepholes and takes refuge inside prams, sombreros, pelican‘s mouths and boxes. Coconino County provides the backdrop for this espionage, shifting from panel to panel in a ‗perpetual 1 e.e. cummings, ‗Introduction‘, in George Herriman, Krazy Kat, ed. Joseph Greene and Rex Chessman (New York: Madison Square Press, 1977), p.10. cummings intentionally misspells ‗burlesk‘, in keeping with Herriman‘s idiosyncratic spelling. 2 25/8/18. Although Krazy is androgynous, I will refer to her as feminine for the sake of consistency, and to differentiate her from Ignatz and Offissa Pupp, who are both male. -

Identity and Form in Alternative Comics, 1967 – 2007
IDENTITY AND FORM IN ALTERNATIVE COMICS, 1967 – 2007 Emma Tinker UCL 2008 1 I, Emma Tinker, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 ABSTRACT Identity and Form in Alternative Comics, 1967 – 2007 In the late 1960s, underground cartoonists established the comic book form as a space for the exploration of personal identity. “Alternative” comics grew out of this tradition as subsequent writers produced work independently of the major comics publishers, aimed at an adult audience and encompassing a broad range of visual styles and narrative content. Throughout the past forty years, British, US and Canadian writers and artists have used this medium to explore questions of selfhood and perception, often implicitly or overtly relating these issues to the form, history and conventions of the comic book itself. Two main threads run through this discussion of the representation of selfhood: childhood and memory on the one hand and sexuality and gender on the other. This thesis argues that for many creators there exists a useful analogy between the comic book form and mental processes, specifically between the fractured, verbal-visual blend of the comics page and the organisation of human memory. It further suggests that the historical association of comics first with childhood, and subsequently with male adolescence, has conditioned the representation of selfhood in adult comics. Comic book consumption has often centred on a community of predominantly young, white, male, socially marginal readers, buying and collecting serialised narratives. -

Still suffering the aftershocks of the Great Depression despite Franklin D. Roosevelt’s progressive New Deal nos- trums—unemployment stood at 17% for 1939—Americans eyed the expanding wars in Europe and Asia nervously. Some tried to dismiss Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini as comic opera buffoons, decrying the hostilities as a “phony war” because not much had happened since the blitzkrieg dismemberment of Poland the previous September. These naysayers did not see it for what it was: the calm before the storm. Before the first year of the new decade was out, Nazi Germany seized Norway, Denmark, Belgium, the Nether- lands, and ultimately France, while attempting to bomb the United Kingdom into subjection. The British held out defiantly, and Hitler reluctantly abandoned his plans to invade England. That small victory brought no cheer to the conquered nations, where Der Führer’s relentless oppres- sion of Jews and other scapegoated minorities was in full force. Il Duce, too, continued his aggression, as Fascist Italy invaded Egypt and Greece.
