Myth, Metatext, Continuity and Cataclysm in Dc Comics’ Crisis on Infinite Earths
WORLDS WILL LIVE, WORLDS WILL DIE: MYTH, METATEXT, CONTINUITY AND CATACLYSM IN DC COMICS’ CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Adam C. Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal. -

En el cómic nadie puede oír tus gritos: a propósito de las adaptaciones del cine al cómic 25 EN EL CÓMIC NADIE PUEDE OÍR TUS GRITOS: A PROPÓSITO DE LAS ADAPTACIONES DEL CINE AL CÓMIC1 Eduard BAILE LÓPEZ Dept. de Filologia Catalana-Aula de Còmic (Universitat d’Alacant) RESUMEN En este artículo se propone un acercamiento a las adaptaciones del cine al cómic, a menudo dejadas de lado en comparación con el fenómeno inverso, más habitual y de mayor impacto mediático. Ciertamente, el camino que lleva del celuloide a las viñetas suele estar plagado de obras olvidables, a menudo fruto tan solo de intereses publicitarios, pero pensamos que, bajo una premisa intermedial, se puede proponer un compendio breve de ejemplos merecedores de análisis. Así pues, queremos presentar una propuesta de diez ítems que se constituyen como una suerte de canon artístico expuesto al debate. Posteriormente, una de las obras escogidas, Alien: The Illustrated Story (1979), será objeto específico de reflexión como ítem modélico. Palabras clave: cómic, cine, adaptación, intermedialidad. 1. 2020 CHAIN BRIDGE DISTRICT LIFE TO EAGLE GUIDELINES 2020 Edition: This edition of the CBD Life to Eagle Guidelines reflects relevant BSA policies and publications in effect as of January 15, 2020. It also contains explanations, interpretive information and suggestions intended to help Scouts avoid common errors that could delay their progress along the path to Eagle rank. Because BSA policies can change, Scouts should work closely with a Unit Eagle Advisor who will be knowledgeable concerning future policy changes that could affect the Life-to-Eagle process. On February 1, 2019, BSA started admitting girls to "Scouts BSA". Advancement requirements for girls are the same as for boys, but there are some "Temporary Transition Rules" for new Scouts (boys and girls) who joined Scouts BSA for the first time in 2019. The Temporary Transition Rules are not available for new Scouts BSA members who joined after December 31, 2019. Many Scouters support the Life to Eagle process in the Chain Bridge District. Special recognition is given to: Richard Meyers, Chain Bridge District Eagle Chair The Chain Bridge District Eagle Board Eagle Advisers and Project Coaches in CBD troops, crews, and ship These dedicated adult leaders contribute their valuable time and patient assistance to help Life Scouts attain the highest rank in Scouting. Copyright 2013 Shawn Patrick Gilmore THE INVENTION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: UNDERGROUND COMIX AND CORPORATE AESTHETICS BY SHAWN PATRICK GILMORE DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Michael Rothberg, Chair Professor Cary Nelson Associate Professor James Hansen Associate Professor Stephanie Foote ii Abstract This dissertation explores what I term the invention of the graphic novel, or more specifically, the process by which stories told in comics (or graphic narratives) form became longer, more complex, concerned with deeper themes and symbolism, and formally more coherent, ultimately requiring a new publication format, which came to be known as the graphic novel. This format was invented in fits and starts throughout the twentieth century, and I argue throughout this dissertation that only by examining the nuances of the publishing history of twentieth-century comics can we fully understand the process by which the graphic novel emerged. In particular, I show that previous studies of the history of comics tend to focus on one of two broad genealogies: 1) corporate, commercially-oriented, typically superhero-focused comic books, produced by teams of artists; 2) individually-produced, counter-cultural, typically autobiographical underground comix and their subsequent progeny. In this dissertation, I bring these two genealogies together, demonstrating that we can only truly understand the evolution of comics toward the graphic novel format by considering the movement of artists between these two camps and the works that they produced along the way. -

Comics Aren’t Just For Fun Anymore: The Practical Use of Comics by TESOL Professionals by David Recine A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in TESOL _________________________________________ Adviser Date _________________________________________ Graduate Committee Member Date _________________________________________ Graduate Committee Member Date University of Wisconsin-River Falls 2013 Comics, in the form of comic strips, comic books, and single panel cartoons are ubiquitous in classroom materials for teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). While comics material is widely accepted as a teaching aid in TESOL, there is relatively little research into why comics are popular as a teaching instrument and how the effectiveness of comics can be maximized in TESOL. This thesis is designed to bridge the gap between conventional wisdom on the use of comics in ESL/EFL instruction and research related to visual aids in learning and language acquisition. The hidden science behind comics use in TESOL is examined to reveal the nature of comics, the psychological impact of the medium on learners, the qualities that make some comics more educational than others, and the most empirically sound ways to use comics in education. The definition of the comics medium itself is explored; characterizations of comics created by TESOL professionals, comic scholars, and psychologists are indexed and analyzed. This definition is followed by a look at the current role of comics in society at large, the teaching community in general, and TESOL specifically. From there, this paper explores the psycholinguistic concepts of construction of meaning and the language faculty. -
