PHIL HOGAN MEMBER OF THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION AGRICULTURE AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT Brussels, 29. 07. 2015 CRC/hm(2015) Honorable Members of the European Parliament, Thank you for your letter on 'Teran' in which you underline the significant political and economic importance which 'Teran' wine has for Slovenia. Teran is indeed a protected designation of origin (PDO) for wine traditionally produced in the Kras wine-growing region from grapes of the Ref osk vine variety listed in the register of designations of origin and geographical indications and protected in the EU in accordance with Council Regulation (EC) No. 1308/2013 as from 2011. However, such protection is without prejudice to the legitimate interests and rights of Croatian wine producers to continue to use the name of the Teran as a grapevine variety. Pursuant to Article 100(3) second paragraph of Regulation (EU) № 1308/2013, where the name of a wine grape variety contains or consists of a PDO or a PGI, that name shall not be used for the purposes of labelling. In order to take into account existing labelling practices, the Commission is empowered to adopt delegated acts in accordance with Article 227 laying down exceptions from this rule. Let me stress that both my services and I have had numerous discussion on the issue with representatives of Slovenia, touching upon all aspects of the issue with a view to finding a solution which protects the legitimate interests of all parties involved. As late as yesterday I met with Deputy Prime Minister Zidan and we agreed to clarify further some outstanding issues of concern. According to a statement you made on behalf of the European Union on 6th December, this spurious process took place in the absence of electoral conditions that could have guaranteed its credibility, without any respect for political pluralism, and in an atmosphere of persecution and disqualification of democratic leaders whose legitimate rights were curtailed. Your statement concludes that such circumstances could not consider this process credible, inclusive, and transparent and therefore the results did not represent the will of the Venezuelan people. That initial statement was confirmed on 6 January of this year by a new declaration, in similar terms to those expressed on 6 December, and by the conclusions of the Foreign Affairs Council of 25 January. These reiterated the lack of recognition of the electoral process and regretted the behaviour of the authorities of the Maduro regime, whose actions are preventing a solution to the serious crisis in Venezuela. We were surprised and gravely concerned to learn that on 14th April, at your request, senior officials of the European External Action Service received the aforementioned delegation, comprising Iris Varela, Pedro Carreño and Desirée Santos Amaral, at the EEAS headquarters.

Milan Zver Tjaša Živko Vito Bobek The process of enlargement is in its final stage, the shavemore or less adapted to the western standards, which is not yet sufficient for successful completion of the transition process successfully. We have learned from the failed communism that the imported norms, institu- tions and practices can cause entropy, unless they reflect the prevailing cultural orientation in the society. People should believe that what they are presented as right (norms) is also good (values). For this reason the system of norms and values should be developed simultaneously. The research results show that the symptoms of economic cultures are less evident in the sthanintheselected countries, thus the democratic socialization (stimulated from outside) is the key issue. For this reason the s should be included in the network of the Euro- Atlantic integrations as soon as possible in order to ensure the demo- cratic stability and economic efficiency of Europe. Introduction The process of enlargement has reached its final stage. The most ad- vanced accession countries have closed almost every negotiation chapter.¹ In the process of transition the post-communist s² are becoming more similar to the democratic societies³ and to the modern economic systems from the structural and cultural⁴ point of view. Structural adaptation requires the adoption of basic institutional, ju- ridical and behavioural standards in force in the developed western so- cieties. Brussels, 27 March 2017 Dear Mr. Dijsselbloem, Earlier this week we have known the statements you have made to a communication media, which we consider unequivocally discriminatory and offensive against several EU countries as well as offensive and sexist towards women. Shortly after the publication of your statements, you had the opportunity to rectify at the European Parliament, but you avoided doing so. On the contrary, instead of apologizing, you have said that the problem is that we do not understand the direct style of speech known to Calvinist culture. In our opinion, Calvinist culture has nothing to do with disdain for other people. This is the reason why we are again asking you - as representatives of European citizens, who have chosen us directly - to reflect and to rectify. Your statements attack one of the most important values that underpin our European Union: equality. In the last six decades, we have all managed together, Mr Dijsselbloem, to materialize a dream that once seemed unthinkable: that Europeans should be equal in opportunities, rights and obligations. The EU is not just rules, meetings and political decisions. What supports all of this, what gives meaning to the EU, are our common values, and equality as the most important one. Therefore, respecting these values should be the first obligation for any European leader, Mr Dijsselbloem. This includes assuming that European citizens, like any human being, are all equally respectable, regardless of our gender and our country of origin or residence. Attacking a certain group of countries as you have done is attacking each one of the EU countries.

THE NEW EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT KEY COMMITTEE COMPOSITION 31 JULY 2019 INTRODUCTION After several marathon sessions, the European Council agreed on the line-up for the EU “top jobs” on 2 July 2019. The deal, which notably saw German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen (CDU, EPP) surprisingly designated as the next European Commission (EC) President, meant that the European Parliament (EP) could proceed with the election of its own leadership on 3 July. The EPP and Renew Europe (formerly ALDE) groups, in line with the agreement, did not present candidates for the EP President. As such, the vote pitted the S&D’s David-Maria Sassoli (IT) against two former Spitzenkandidaten – Ska Keller (DE) of the Greens and Jan Zahradil (CZ) of the ACRE/ECR, alongside placeholder candidate Sira Rego (ES) of GUE. Sassoli was elected President for the first half of the 2019 – 2024 mandate, while the EPP (presumably EPP Spitzenkandidat Manfred Weber) would take the reins from January 2022. The vote was largely seen as a formality and a demonstration of the three largest Groups’ capacity to govern. However, Zahradil received almost 100 votes (more than the total votes of the ECR group), and Keller received almost twice as many votes as there are Greens/EFA MEPs. This forced a second round in which Sassoli was narrowly elected with just 11 more than the necessary simple majority. Close to 12% of MEPs did not cast a ballot. MEPs also elected 14 Vice-Presidents (VPs): Mairead McGuinness (EPP, IE), Pedro Silva Pereira (S&D, PT), Rainer Wieland (EPP, DE), Katarina Barley (S&D, DE), Othmar Karas (EPP, AT), Ewa Kopacz (EPP, PL), Klara Dobrev (S&D, HU), Dita Charanzová (RE, CZ), Nicola Beer (RE, DE), Lívia Járóka (EPP, HU) and Heidi Hautala (Greens/EFA, FI) were elected in the first ballot, while Marcel Kolaja (Greens/EFA, CZ), Dimitrios Papadimoulis (GUE/NGL, EL) and Fabio Massimo Castaldo (NI, IT) needed the second round.

Federica Mogherini, European External Action Service 1046 Brussels Belgium February 6th 2015, Brussels Dear HR/VP Federica Mogherini, We are writing to you with grave concern with regards to an incident of mass rape, committed by the Sudanese Army in Darfur in October-November 2014. The UN and African Union Peace Keeping Force stationed in the region, UNAMID, failed to report on the incident, or take appropriate action. These failures add to a persistent lapse in UNAMID's functioning, which must be addressed, and likewise, the community in must be provided with the necessary UN support. These concerns have been brought to us by civil society actors and constituents who are themselves Sudanese refugees. On the night between Friday the 31st of October, and the 1st of November 2014, 650 Sudanese soldiers attacked the village of Tabit in Darfur, and systematically raped 200 women and girls, 80 of whom were minors. UNAMID investigators, stationed only 30 miles away, arrived three days later and interviewed witnesses, who in turn confirmed that the events took place. However, after communications with the Sudanese military intelligence, UNAMID reported that it "found no evidence nor received any information regarding the allegations." UNAMID has a well-established track-record of failures to report on human rights abuses committed by the Sudanese military and its affiliated militias. A UN Review Team found, on October 29th, that UNAMID had "lapses in reporting standards" and "a tendency not to report fully on incidents involving attacks on civilians." This lack of reporting in turn emboldens the Sudanese Army and its militias in their campaign against non-Arab civilians in the region - a campaign of war crimes that has involved systematic rape for more than a decade.

But first and foremost, it is a successful peace project. It has succeeded to bring over 70 years of peace and friendship to a continent that has known nothing but war, hatred and nationalism. The Czech and Slovak people were the first victims of the nationalism propagated by the Nazis, when the German Reich decided to swallow it as whole in 1938. And everyone stood by and watched how the Czech people lost their independence and freedom. Today we are all part of a Union. We stand up for each other and look out for each other in solidarity. To Slovenians, Czechs are friends, not foes. When we meet each other by coincidence in Asia or the USA, we greet each other as equals and feel united as Europeans in our values and way of life. We drink Czech beer and you drink Slovenian wine; and when we share both, we have many good times with each other. When we battle, then only as competitors in sports for trophies and honours; and when we lose, we still shake hands after, because that is fair sportsmanship. Your rude words on Twitter after the football match between FC Slavia Prague and FC Midtjylland last Wednesday, describing Slovenians as “opportunistic pigs”, do not hurt us, because they are lowly and crude.
