Situation : au pied du versant oriental du massif du Psiloritis, au sud / sud-ouest du village d’Ano Asites, municipalité et unité régionale d'Heraklion. Agios Haralambos sur Google Maps Accès : – en véhicule jusqu'à Ano Asites (27 km au sud-ouest d'Heraklion) ; – en bus KTEL : ligne Heraklion / Ano Asites (dessertes peu fréquentes) Altitudes : Ano Asites 490 m ; captage 510 m ; chapelle d'Agios Haralambos 540 m Longueur et durée du parcours pédestre : captage – chapelle d'Agios Haralambos = 1,5 km (compter 20 min à ½ h aller) Météo locale : Ano Asites et ses environs Observations : cours d'eau temporaire à sec en été – promenade brève et facile dans l'ensemble à coupler avec la visite de la gorge d'Agios Antonios Asites. Approche / Descriptif : A la sortie d'Ano Asites en direction de Prinias et d'Agia Varvara, prendre à droite une petite route puis, presque immédiatement, la 1re piste à gauche. Celle-ci conduit au bout d' 1 km d'une voie moyennement carrossable, à un captage près duquel le stationnement est possible. La gorge est alors visible. Poursuivre à pied pour prendre sur la rive droite du lit de la rivière un sentier longeant les clôtures. Il grimpe progressivement pour enfin dominer la gorge avant de descendre. En allant vers l'amont le passage s'élargit et conduit non loin de là à la chapelle rupestre d'Agios Haralambos. Remarque : plusieurs barrières de parcages jalonnent ce parcours. Elles doivent être refermées impérativement. A voir à proximité : le site archéologique de Rizinia à Prinias. Manifestation : le 10 février, célébration d'Agios Haralambos Ravitaillement : alimentation générale et taverne à Ano Asites ; petits commerces et tavernes à Kato Asites. KRUPA : Notes et comptes rendus de visites, d'accompagnements et de séjours en Crète. 1 / ANO ASITES : GORGE d'AGIOS HARALAMBOS © crete.decouverte – publié le 22 octobre 2011 ; dernière mise à jour le 15 novembre 2020 La cité antique de Rizinia et sa nécropole Prinias – Gortyn – HERAKLION Le site archéologique de Rizinia est situé en Crète centrale, sur la colline de Patela au pied est du massif de l'Ida. Ce petit relief aux flancs abrupts, véritable point de défense naturel accessible uniquement par l'ouest, a été occupé du Minoen Récent jusqu'à la fin de la période grecque comme en témoignent les découvertes effectuées lors des différentes fouilles. L'ancienne cité minoenne, probablement devenue refuge des Etéocrétois vers 1200 av. J.-C., a ensuite prospéré et connu son apogée à l'époque archaïque avant de devenir une dépendance de Gortyne du Ve au IIe siècle puis semble s'être dépeuplée au cours de la période hellénistique. Les vestiges les mieux conservés se trouvent sur la partie haute de la colline près du sommet (alt. 685 m). Pour s'y rendre, monter sur la droite après le portail d'entrée. La promenade permet notamment d'identifier au sud-ouest les restes d'une fortification avec 4 tours puis un peu plus à l'est, toujours sur la partie méridionale, les fondations de 2 temples antiques et les ruines d'habitations du VIIe siècle. Ce dernier endroit possède un point de vue en direction du sud sur l'actuel village de Prinias. Outre l'aspect archéologique, une petite promenade vers l'extrémité orientale de la colline, permet d'atteindre la chapelle d'Agios Panteleimon d'où l'on découvre un panorama exceptionnel sur les petites plaines, collines et plateaux du bassin d'Heraklion. La visite de l'antique Prinia serait incomplète sans un arrêt à la nécropole dite « Siderospilia ». Elle se situe à environ 500 m au nord-ouest du site, en direction d'Ano Asites. Deux sépultures creusées dans la roche, en bord de route sont particulièrement visibles. Toutefois, ces dernières ne reflètent en rien, l'importance du cimetière antique qui compte environ 600 tombes aux pratiques funéraires différentes, les environs ayant été consacrés aux inhumations pendant plusieurs siècles. Comment y accéder : Du bourg d'Agia Varvara (25 km au sud-ouest d'Heraklion), prendre vers le nord la route pour le village de Prinias. Continuer ensuite en direction d'Ano Asites sur environ 1,5 km. Stationner sur la droite, près du panneau qui indique le site de Rizinia, puis parcourir à pied environ 300 m pour atteindre le portail d'entrée.     REGIONAL SETTLEMENT PATTERNS, EXCHANGE SYSTEMS AND SOURCES OF POWERIN CRETE AT THE END OF THE LATE BRONZE AGE: ESTABLISHING A CONNECTION by EUSABETTA BORGNA 1. - INTRODUCTION The traditional debate on the end of the Bronze Age and the transition to the Iron Age in Crete has been fuelled in recent years by new contributions adopting new theoretical perspectives and specific fieldwork practices, such as in particular regional surveys '. The purpose of this paper is to integrate certain recent indications with the preliminary results of a research project based on the analysis of the material culture coming from a single Late Bronze Age Cretan site, namely Phaistos in south-central Crete (Borgna 2001; 2003b, with literature). The data to be placed into a broader framework will, hopefully, serve to furnish a pattern for both the regional distribution of the population and the socio-economic relationships among the settlements and districts of Crete at the close of the Late Bronze Age. Some observations emerging from the scholarly dicussion arising out of a specific Cretan perspective, together with an Aegean Mediterranean view, have provided the investigation with theoretical premises and analytical basis. These can be summarized as follows: - In opposition to a generalizing explanation for Dark Age Crete, D. Haggis (1993; 2001; 2002) has reiterated the usefulness of a contextual analysis aiming at focusing on diversified regional realities. Furthermore, he has applied the concept of socio-economic "integration" to cultural frameworks and population layouts which, during the development of Minoan societies and in particular in the Prepalatial period, were unaffetcted by the control of central authorities.

    22: COAST FROM TSOUTSOUROS TO AGIA GALINI CHAPTER 22 COAST FROM TSOUTSOUROS TO AGIA GALINI Tsoutsouros is a cluster of small one-storey flat roofed houses on the beach at the mouth of the Tsoutsouropotamo.1 The only remarkable object there was a monk named Isaac; from what monastery I do not know, but he was living there at least for the time. This man, no longer young, was what is called a Spanos, that is, one of those men, not at all uncommon in Crete, who are marked off by having either no beard at all or only the very scantiest. Their age it is always next to impossible to tell: it could only be said of Isaac that he was not young. Standing apart from ordinary humanity, these unfortunates, by reason of their prolonged but odd-looking youthfulness and their miserably shrivelling but seemingly timeless age, remind one, sadly, of Swift’s terrible invention of the deathless Struldbrugs. The Cretans in general are a well- bearded race and look upon the Spanoi with an odd mixture of derision and fear. In folktale they are always cruel and cunning, and generally villainous. What the Greeks of the middle age thought of them may be seen from the satirical parody of the liturgy called the Mass of the Spanos, a long torrent of scurrility directed against one of these unfortunates. In modern Crete they are credited with having the evil eye. The keeper of a kapheneion at Chersonnesos, where I have often spent the midday halt, is one of them.

Special educational material was prepared with photos and texts of archaeological excavations and field sampling which was used in real and virtual environment, in α discovery teaching of Natural Sciences and History subjects. Students, in a scientific research project with constructive teachings, followed the procedures by which scientists gather, analyze, synthesize, process and evaluate information of organisms of Crete since 4000 years. Crete is located between the natural limits of three continents, having the unique privilege to host permanently or in migration, distinctive species of these three continents. After having the research questions, teachers collected the educational material, organized the work groups, implemented the didactic intervention in the classroom, had the field sampling of plants, recognized the synchronous local and scientific names of the plants, constructed the botany book, photographed the collected organisms and all the concentrated material was delivered to the team members. METHODOLOGICAL CON­ SIDERATIONS In the eighth and seventh centuries Crete had been one of the most advanced regions in Greece. The Cretans adopted the alphabet very early; Cretan artists played a leading part in the development of Greek art, espe­ cially in the fields of metallurgy and stone sculpture; in the early seventh century they participated in colonisation, founding Gela together with the Rhodians; the Homeric hymn to Apollo associates the Cretans with the foundation of the sanctuary at Delphi. It is in this period of cosmopoli­ tanism and close contacts to the Orient, a period of a visible advance of trade, arts, and culture, that Crete seems to petrify. From the late seventh century onwards trade and arts do not disappear, but they certainly lost the innovative power they had had; the Cretan institutions do not keep pace with the developments in the rest of Greece; and although Crete was never isolated from the rest of Greece, its contacts with other Greek areas in the sixth and fifth centuries were not impressive. The decline of Crete as a cul­ tural pioneer in the Greek world goes hand in hand with the rise of its fame as a model of law and order. The Cretans did not any longer produce impressive works of art, but they produced more legal inscriptions than the 1 rest of Greece taken together.

  • Excavations at Kommos (Crete) During 1979 215
    EXCAVATIONSAT KOMMOS(CRETE) DURING 1979 (PLATES53-67) During this fourth season of our excavations at Kommos we completed all major excavation of the Late Minoan (LM) houses on the hilltop as well as the LM house discovered earlier on the hillside. Soundings in the Middle Minoan (MM) levels in both these areas proved to be profitable,especially on the hillside where an intact MM storeroom was found within most informative stratigraphiccontexts. In the Greek sanctuaryto the south two more, relativelylarge altarswere found within the deep sand. West of them we discovereda Greek temple of which the outer walls are destroyed but the interioris intact. Below the floor of the temple is an unusual shrine of Late Geometric/EarlyArchaic date. Further west, along the shore, lies a group of Minoan buildingsof a monumentalcharacter not hitherto encounteredon the Kommos site.
