A big s te p for a woman of "7 0 ish " years. But sh e takes it in stride with an e n te rta ining revu e, "Remembering The Grea t Ladles of ! Caba ret", at Don 't Tell Mama, 34 3 West 46 Street. f Tbis spunky lady, spo r ti ng a fuchsia silk pants suit and a cropped platinum coiffure, steps in to t he spotlight, puts her hand on her hip an d states categorically "I've always had great love and respect for great ladies of cabaret. Alberta Hunter, Mabel Mercer and Mae Barnes, 1 do n't want their images to die. So I'm going to try to keep the memory of them alive, and, maybe 20 years from now young people will remember that Jean Taylor also used to sing Cabaret." Then, she moves confidently into a repertoire of tunes that not only evokes memories of her Idols but also reflects her view of li fe-I've Got A Lot of living To Do, and This Is AIl I Ask, which , contains the appropriate line "As 1 approach the prime of my life 1 have tbe lime of my life." The selections include upbeat tunes suc h as That's How The Ball Baunces, Baby, written hy her music consu ltant Dawn Hampton . which she si ngs with jazz and sass. And pianist Ian H erman and bassist Lyn Christie provide solid support. Miss Tayler , the actress, emp loys her acting skill s in doing asid es. skills tha t truly shine when she tell s a joke. "You remember- bow comedians would lean back and look left. then right before telling a joke," she asks, adding " I always wanled to do that". So. Isbe does, and proceeds to tell a bawdy joke. An older woman find s a I. handsome young man at her front door one rainy night looking for a place to stay. His car had broken down. She invites him to sha're her bed. Miss Taylor then use s ge stures, faci al ex pressions and vocalizations to describe what happen s next-tbe house explodes with Iaugbter. The audience is entertained with some fancy footwork as well-a mean soft shoe . Without skipping a heat, Miss Taylor slips ba ck into singing like a foot slides into an old slipper. This versatile Washington ian has had many years in show business. She made her debut in the late 19305, as a member of an all-gtrl touring hand call ed Sweethearts of Rhythm. The n wen t on to appear in several stage. screen and telev ision productions. including Great While Hope. Colton Comes To Harlem and the fanner NDC s.itcom Sanford and Son. Today, she is at case with the audience and the y with her. She chats with them and gets them to join her in song. Defore closing tbe sbow on Au g 4, Miss Taylor gave a touch ing trlbute to Mae Barnes (now residing in a nursing borne), sitting in the audience. along with oth er well -known performers. jazz pi an Ist Don Sblrley, boofer Honi Col es and the Copeseucs. Tbey were all there to share in the tribute. Proudly. she asked them to stand. After presenting a plaque to Miss Barnes, sbe broke in to a snappy Dumber that served as a rousing end to a wonderful show. one so inspiring you'll want to tell everyone about it-even Mama, Remaining performances are August 18. 25; September B and 15,5:30 pm .
