Estaespecie es dominante en el sistema por su abundancia numérica, peso, alta frecuencia y amplia distribución. Se obtuvieron 368 individuos, con un peso total de 22,087 g y un intervalo de longitud total de 4.5 a 29.5 cm. La variación anual del coeficiente alométrico b fue de 2.727 a 3.3412. El factor de condición varió de 0.393 a 1.0976. La población está constituida principalmente por individuos juveniles y escasos preadultos y adultos en estadios gonádicos I, II, III, IV, VI y VII, registrándose más hembras maduras que machos desde los 17 cm. La especie utiliza el sistema como área de crianza, crecimiento y alimentación. Tiene un espectro trófico variado ya que consume al menos 11 grupos diferentes, siendo su alimento principal los ostrácodos, foraminíferos, nematodos y tanaidáceos. Es un consumidor de primer orden. El sistema Pom-Atasta se ubica en una zona de intensa actividad pesquera y petrolera, por lo cual es importante avanzar en el conocimiento de sus recursos pesqueros. Palabras clave: Eugerres plumieri, biología, ecología, Pom-Atasta, Golfo de México. 253 Ciencias Marinas, Vol. 26, No. 2, 2000 ABSTRACT Biological and ecological aspects of Eugerres plumieri were analyzed during an annual cycle from 1992 to 1993 in the fluvial-deltaic Pom-Atasta system associated with Términos Lagoon, Campeche (Mexico). It is a dominant species in the system, based on its numeric abundance, weight, high frequency and wide distribution. A total of 368 individuals were obtained, with a weight of 22,087 g and length ranging from 4.5 to 29.5 cm. The annual variation of the allometric coefficient b was from 2.727 to 3.3412. The condition factor varied from 0.393 to 1.0976. The population consists mainly of juvenile and adult individuals in gonadal stages I, II, III, IV, VI and VII, and more mature females than males were recorded after 17 cm. This species utilizes the system as a nursery, growth and feeding area. It has a varied trophic spectra and consumes at least 11 different groups. Its principal food items are ostracods, foraminifers, nematodes and tanaidaceans. It is a first order consumer. The Pom-Atasta system is located in a zone of intense fishing and oil activity, so it is important to advance in the knowledge of its fishing resources. Laguna de Tamiahua is ecologically and economically important as a nursery area that favours the recruitment of species that sustain traditional fisheries. It has been studied previously, though not throughout its whole area, and considering the variety of habitats that sustain these fisheries, as well as an increase in population growth that impacts the system. The objectives of this study were to present an updated list of fish species, data on special status, new records, commercial importance, dominance, density, ecotic position, and the spatial and temporal distribution of species in the lagoon, together with a comparison of Tamiahua with 14 other Gulf of Mexico lagoons. Materials and methods. Fish were collected in August and December 1996 with a Renfro beam net and an otter trawl from different habitats throughout the lagoon. The species were identified, classified in relation to special status, new records, commercial importance, density, dominance, ecotic position, and spatial distribution patterns.

While investigating the parasites of several marine fishes from the Western Atlantic, the Southern Gulf of Mexico and Central America (Panama), the following monogenoidean species from the gills of gerreid fishes (Gerreidae) were found: Diplec- tanum gatunense sp. n. (Diplectanidae) and Octouncuhaptor eugerrei gen. et sp. n. (Dactylogyridae) in Eugerres brasilianus (Cuvier) from Gatun Lake in the Panama Canal Watershed, and Diplectanum mexicanum sp. n. in Diapterus rhombeus (Cuvier) from the coast of Campeche State, Mexico. New diplectanid species are distinguished from other species of the genus by the general morphology of the copulatory complex and by the shape of the anchors and bars on the haptor. Octouncuhaptor gen. n. is proposed for its new species having slightly overlapping gonads (testis posterodorsal to the ovary), a dextrolateral vaginal aper- ture, a copulatory complex consisting of a coiled male copulatory organ with counterclockwise rings with the base articulated to the accessory piece, 8 pairs of hooks and the absence of anchors and bars on haptor.

The fish belonging to Gerreidae are common representatives of the coastal ichthyofauna of the tropics and subtropics of the world. The genus Diapterus has a neotropical distri- bution and currently includes four species: two in the Atlantic Ocean [Irish mojarra D. auratus Ranzani 1842 and rhombic mojarra D. rhombeus (Cuvier 1829)] and two in the Pacific Ocean [short-beaked mojarra D. brevirostris (Sauvage 1879) and golden mojarra D. aureolus (Jordan & Gilbert 1882)]. This genus has uncertain taxonomy based on the remarkable and dissimilar morphology of D. aureolus. We evaluated the taxonomy and phylogeny of Diapterus with statistical (canonical discriminant analysis) and phyloge- netic analyses (maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference) of geo- metric morphometric data (relative warps) and molecular data (12Sr RNA, 16Sr RNA, COI and RAG1 sequences). Our results indicate that the genus Diapterus as we currently conceive it is a polyphyletic group: [(Gerres cinereus – Eucinostomus spp. (D. aureolus – (Eugerres spp. (D. auratus – (D. brevirostris – D. rhombeus)))))]. Therefore, a taxonomic rearrangement is needed. To preserve the monophyly of the group, our proposal is to remove D. aureolus and place it in a new monotypic genus.

Background. Although the species of the family Gerreidae have been subjected to many studies, their taxono- my at specific- and sometimes generic levels is still confusing. To contribute to the clarification of the taxonomy of the Mexican Pacific mojarras, the morphology of sagittal otoliths among six species of mojarras (Diapterus brevirostris, Eugerres lineatus, Eucinostomus dowii, E entomelas, E. currani, and Gerres cinereus) was com- pared using size and shape descriptors. Otolith shape has long been known to be species-specific but this has not been tested in species of the family Gerreidae. Therefore, our goal was to explore the effectiveness of otolith descriptors for identifying gerreid fish at species level. Materials and methods. Gerreid fish were captured between January 2009 and January 2010, off the Pacific coast of Mexico. The right- and left sagittae of 160 individuals were extracted for analysis. Size and shape descriptors considered in the presently reported analysis were: surface area, perimeter, length, width, rectangu- larity, ellipticity, roundness, circularity, aspect ratio, form-factor, Feret length, Feret width, Feret maximum, Feret minimum, diameter maximum, diameter minimum, diameter mean, ratio maximum, and ratio minimum.
