[Re- markable records of Microlepidoptera in Sweden during 1993.1 - Enr. Tidskr. I l5 ( l-2):45- 52. Uppsala, Sweden 1994. ISSN 0013-886x. The series of annual compilations of remarkable records of Microlepidoptera is continued for the 2lst year. The weather was normal in most parts of Sweden as to temperature and precipitation, on an average. In reality it was most abnormal. The winter was mild as it has been in the last five years. The summer appeared already at the end of april with the highest temperatures of the year in many places. The warm and very dry period continued for a month and then the rest of the year was colder and wetter than normal. As a result of the weather conditions almost all interesting finds were made in the first half of the year. Three species were found new to Sweden, Argyresthia trifasciata Staudinger, Cydia grunertiana (Ratze- burg) and Cydia molesto (Busck). A possibly undescribed Athrips species collected in 1992 and 1993 is recorded. Contrarily, Monochroa brundini (Benander) is sunk to a synonym of Aproaerema anthyllidella (HUbner) and Schiffermuelleria schaefferella (L.), Celypha flavi- palpana (Henich-Schiiffer) and Homoeosoma nebulella (Denis & Schiffermiiller) are con- sidered not found in Sweden. Totally, unchanged 1652 species of Microlepidoptera are known from Sweden. I. Svensson, Vivedalsvtigen 10, Ostersltiv, 5-291 94 Kristianstad, Sweden. Changes in vegetation structure can alter the physical habitat structure, thermal environment, and food available to arthropods, which play an important role in the structure and functioning of Arctic ecosystems. Not only do they provide key ecosystem services such as pollination and nutrient cycling, they are an essential food source for migratory birds. In this study I examined the relationships between the abundance, diversity, and community composition of arthropods and the height and cover of several shrub species across a tundra-shrub gradient in northwestern Alaska. To characterize nestling diet of common passerines that occupy this gradient, I used next-generation sequencing of fecal matter. Willow cover was strongly and consistently associated with abundance and biomass of arthropods and significant shifts in arthropod community composition and diversity.

We identified a total of 14 specimens of the olethreutine moth, OJethreutes subtilana (Falkovitsh, 1959) from various locations in southern and central Germany (Bavaria, Rhineland-Palatinate, Thuriniga). This species was previously known from European Russia through the eastern Palearctic; hence the findings represent the first records for Central Europe. Specimens were detected among large series of the wide- spread and common O. arcuella (Clerck, 1759); they had been overlooked and confused with the latter, as O. arcuella, with its very characteristic wing pattern, was believed to represent the only species of this group in Central and Western Europe. The first O. subtilana was only accidentally detected in the course of a genetic all-species survey of the Bavarian animals ("Barcoding Fauna Bavarica"). This paper compiles and illustrates the key characters allowing unambiguous identification, and describes the present state of knowledge of distribution, habitats and phenology in Germany.

A variety of collecting methods was used, including netting, light attracting, light trapping and pheromone trapping. The specimens were identified by the currently available pictorial sources and determination keys. Many were also sent to specialists for confirmation or identification. The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author. This imbalance of data between Kanawha County and other counties should even out with further sampling of the area. Key Words: Appalachian Mountains,

A total of 232 species were recorded from early May to mid-August 2011, among them four new records for the country: Blastobasis desertarum, Agriphila tolli, Epimecia ustula und Mythimna riparia. These records seem to be largely based on global warming and/or introduction. Further interesting records include endangered species such as Catocala electa. The species composition is briefly discussed, based on ecological gilds and habitats. Varying management seems to have limited influence on diversity. • DNA Barcoding the Geometrid Fauna of Bavaria (Lepidoptera): Successes, Surprises, and Questions
DNA Barcoding the Geometrid Fauna of Bavaria (Lepidoptera): Successes, Surprises, and Questions Axel Hausmann1*, Gerhard Haszprunar1, Paul D. N. Hebert2 1 Entomology Department, Zoological Collection of the State of Bavaria, Munich, Germany, 2 Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, University of Guelph, Guelph, Canada Abstract Background: The State of Bavaria is involved in a research program that will lead to the construction of a DNA barcode library for all animal species within its territorial boundaries. The present study provides a comprehensive DNA barcode library for the Geometridae, one of the most diverse of insect families. Methodology/Principal Findings: This study reports DNA barcodes for 400 Bavarian geometrid species, 98 per cent of the known fauna, and approximately one per cent of all Bavarian animal species. Although 98.5% of these species possess diagnostic barcode sequences in Bavaria, records from neighbouring countries suggest that species-level resolution may be compromised in up to 3.5% of cases. All taxa which apparently share barcodes are discussed in detail. One case of modest divergence (1.4%) revealed a species overlooked by the current taxonomic system: Eupithecia goossensiata Mabille, 1869 stat.n. is raised from synonymy with Eupithecia absinthiata (Clerck, 1759) to species rank. Deep intraspecific sequence divergences (.2%) were detected in 20 traditionally recognized species. Conclusions/Significance: The study emphasizes the effectiveness of DNA barcoding as a tool for monitoring biodiversity. Open access is provided to a data set that includes records for 1,395 geometrid specimens (331 species) from Bavaria, with 69 additional species from neighbouring regions. Taxa with deep intraspecific sequence divergences are undergoing more detailed analysis to ascertain if they represent cases of cryptic diversity.

Wildnisgebiet Saminatal/Galinatal (Österreich, Nr. 53 - 2018 Vorarlberg; Fürstentum Liechtenstein): ein Refugialraum für Schmetterlinge (Lepidoptera) Peter Huemer1 1 Mag. Dr. Peter Huemer, Tiroler Landesmuseen Betriebsges.m.b.H., Sammlungs- und Forschungszentrum, Naturwissenschaftliche Sammlungen Krajnc-Straße 1, A-6060 Hall in Tirol E-Mail: [email protected] Abstract In the transboundary wilderness area of the Samina and Galina valleys (Austria, Vorarlberg; Principality of Liechtenstein) a total of 742 butterfly and moth species from 54 families were detected within a period lasting from September 2014 to September 2017. In addition, 18 historical and 22 subrecent species records are considered, resulting in a total of 782 species from the inves- tigation area. The faunistic results cover 165 first records for the Principality of Liechtenstein and thus make a fundamental con- tribution to the regional fauna, another 13 species are new to Vorarlberg. Among the most important regional discoveries is the third record of Elachista deriventa (Elachistidae) in Central Europe as well as a record of Elachista ornithopodella (Elachistidae), a species known only from a single specimen in the neighbour countries Austria and Switzerland, respectively. A taxonomically uncertain species of the genus Exoteleia (Gelechiidae) is presumably still undescribed. The local risk for endangered species from the regional Red List is comparatively moderate because of the predominant and only slightly threatened forest habitats. 115 are species are classified in one of the threatened species categories whereas 602 species are not endangered and 62 species are currently not classified within a category.
