The Patriot Faithful Friar’s Report Rev. Sy Nguyen

Dear Brother Knights,

The order of earthly creation is as follows: shapeless abyss, day and night, the sky, land and sea, vegetation, the stars, animals living in water, animals living in the sky, land animals, human beings. Of all creation, hu- man beings are the only creatures made in the image and likeness of God. This means that the order of crea- tion progresses from least to most favorite of God. Of the two first human beings, Adam and Eve, and God created Eve after Adam. This means that womenfolk are the more favorite of God. Have you ever thought of your wife that way? Have you ever thought of women this way? It takes real men to look at women with the respect their dignity deserves.

But Eve is not the last new creation of God, it is the Blessed Mary. She is womankind made anew, with the pristine innocence that Eve had before the fall. She is indeed the most beautiful creature of God, the last in the order of creation, thus, the most favorite creation of God. Men who have devotion to her will cer- tainly be pleasing to God. The month of August is traditionally dedicated to the devotion of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. A man who often glances prayerfully at the Immaculate Heart will have his own heart puri- fied.

Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us!

Your Faithful Friar, Rev. Sy Nguyen 

Saint John Paul II consecrated the world to Mary's Immaculate Heart in 1984. Addressing Our Lady, he said, "You who have a mother's awareness of all the struggles between good and evil, be- tween light and darkness, which afflict the modern world, accept the cry which we ... address directly to your Heart. Embrace with the love of the Mother and Handmaid of the Lord, this human world of ours, which we entrust and consecrate to you ... We have recourse to your protection, holy Mother of God!"

He went on to say, "Immaculate Heart! Help us to conquer the menace of evil, which so easily takes root in the hearts of people today ... ." And he asked Mary to deliver us from famine, from war, from sins against life, from hatred and every kind of injustice, and even from the loss of awareness of good and evil. He then asked that, through this consecration, there be revealed to the world once more "the power of merciful Love!" Source: https://www.marian.org/news/What-IS-the-Immaculate- Heart-7138

Salvation Get it @ catholiccompany.com WHAT EVERY CATHOLIC SHOULD KNOW

• Explains what the Cross, the Church, and the have to do with .

• The salvific message that God is love, and his love is one of transformation and redemption.

At every Sunday Mass, Catholics confess that Jesus came down from heaven “for us men and for our salvation.” But what does “salvation” mean? In this robust and accessible book, Scripture scholar and theologian Michael Patrick Barber provides a thorough, deeply Catholic, and deeply biblical, an- swer. He deftly tackles this complex topic, unpacking what the New Testament teaches about salvation in Christ, detailing what exactly salvation is, and what it is not. In easy and readable prose, he explains what the Cross, the Church, and the Trinity have to do with salvation. While intellectually stimulat- ing, Salvation: What Every Catholic Should Know is deeply spiritual, and at its core is the salvific mes- sage that God is love, and his love is one of transformation and redemption.

P opularly known by Catholics the world over as the Miraculous Medal. The Miraculous Medal has a special place in the hearts of the Marian Fathers of the , since it paved the way for the Church's official declaration of the dogma in 1854. The medal is striking because Our Lady herself presented the famil- iar design.

The front of the medal depicts Mary standing on a globe, with the head of a serpent beneath her feet. Circling the oval-shaped medal is the signature, "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee." On the reverse, 12 stars surround a large "M," from which a cross arises. Below the "M," the medal depicts two flaming hearts. The left heart, circled with thorns, represents Jesus. The right heart, pierced by a sword, symbolizes Mary.

An Unlikely Helper By what intervention and through what vessel did the Blessed Moth- er convey the design of this medal? As in the case of the Divine Mer- cy revelations of St. Faustina, a young, unassuming in 1930s Poland, once again God chose an unlikely helper. Nearly 100 years But what does the medal mean? The Patriot What do the parts of the Vatican flag symbolize?

We’re so used to seeing the Vatican Flag in our churches, on the internet, and pretty much any place affiliated with the . But have you ever thought about what the flag means?

Just like other national flags, the design of the Vatican flag has rich meaning.

As the national flag for , this flag is displayed not only in this part of Italy, but also in many Catho- lic churches, universities, and other Catholic institutions.

The flag is modeled after the flag of the from the early nineteenth century, and is also referred to as the flag of the . Many earlier papal flags were red and gold.

The left side of the flag is a rich yellow. The right side is white and features the coat of arms of Vatican City. At the top of the coat of arms is the papal tiara, which was worn by from the eighth century to the mid- twentieth century.

Beneath the papal tiara are two keys, referring to Matthew 16:19, when Jesus says to St. Peter, “I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.” The gold key represents spiritual power and the silver key stands for worldly power. The keys are connected with a red cord, which symbolizes how the two powers are bound to- gether.

Regarding the choice of yellow and white for the flag, there are various historical and symbolic explanations for these colors. One possible connection is to the keys themselves: the yellow field corresponding to the gold key, the white to the silver key. In heraldry, yellow is equivalent to gold (the heraldic color or) and white to silver (argent). The colors certainly offer a striking visual echo of the keys of Peter.

In 101 Surprising Facts about St. Peter’s and the Vatican, Fr. Jeff Kirby walks you through the history and leg- acy of one of the holiest sites in the world. For example, the astronauts brought the Vatican Flag with them on the Apollo 11 mission, and returned it safely when they returned to earth. The Vatican flag is an iconic symbol of our rich history as a Church. You can honor Vatican City, home of the Holy See and Seat of the Holy Father, with an elegant white mug that features the Vatican flag.
