A bstract A self checklist of the ants indexing of the southern lands of the Australian region is presented, with the faunas involved listed seperately under each genus and cross referenced. The list is current for 1 June 1987. A comprehensive taxonomic bibliography is appended. 1. INTRODUCTION This report is a typeset version of a computer managed checklist of the ants of Australia, New Caledonia and New Zealand which is maintained by the author at the CSIRO Division of Canberra. Entomology, The primary data base is regularly updated to incorporate new information. This version 1 was current on June, 1987. It is reproduced inexpensively because its progressive replacement by further updated printed or microfiche editions is intended. A second data base covers the Melanesian areas of the Australian Region. Despite some unusual features the general layout is conventional. The names of genera and are species listed alphabetically, genera at centered headings and species at the left hand page margins. Names used in currently recognised nomenclatural combinations are in bold text and others are italicised. The italicised centered and marginal headings serve as indexing words to direct the reader elsewhere in the checklist. -

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. BEQUAERT The various means by which Nature prevents an excessiveincrease of the species not only forms in itself an interesting chapter of ecology, but its study is also of great importance in an understanding of the true meaning of Natural Selection. In the case of ants it has been contended that they are better defended than other insects against the attacks of predatory animals. Poulton‘ evidently takes this for granted when he considers that ants, together with wasps, are among the favorite models for “mimicking” insects and other arthropods. These ant-like arthro- pods, having acquired by Natural Selection their resemblance “to the aggressive, abundant, and well-defended ants,” would according to this theory escape many of the attacks of their deceived and disgusted predaceous enemies. Though the evidence presented in the following pages is still very fragmentary, I trust the readsr may easily conclude for himself to what extent such resemblances, which, in some casesat least, can hardly be doubted, have a real protective value. There is certainly little or no evidence to show that, as the theory is often expressed, ants are unpalatable to most insectivorous animals and are merely eaten accidentally or “during the time in which young birds or other animals are learning what to eat with impunity and what to reject.’’2 Another consideration of interest is the relative efficacy of parasitism and predatism in acting as a check on the reproductive power of the species. This point has been profusely discussed, and the argument has frequently been made that parasitism is in this respect of foremost importance. -

PAPERS VOLUME XI, NUMBER 11 HONOLULU, HAWAII PUBLISHED BY THE MUSEUM 1935 CHECK LIST OF THE ANTS OF OCEANIA By \Vn,LIAM MORTON WHEELER INTRODUCTION Oceania, as delimited for the purposes of the following check list, covers, in addition to the groups of small central Pacific islands, the Bismarck Archipelago, the Solomon and Santa Cruz Islands, ew Caledonia, Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands and New Zealand, and in the eastern Pacific the Galapagos Archipelago, Cocos Island, and the small islands off the coast of Mexico and southern Califor nia. New Zealand, notwithstanding its zoogeographical affinities with Australia, is included because of the meagerness and oceanic character of its ant fauna. The other islands mentioned are included because of the interest, both positive and negative, of their faunas in connection with the geographical diffusion of the various species, subspecies, and varieties. All the subfamilies of the Formicidae are represented in Oceania with the exception of the Dorylinae and Leptanillinae. The whole fauna, comprising so far as known 560 forms (339 species, 108 sub species, and 113 varieties), may be assigned to the following four zoogeographical categories: 1. \Vide-ranging, or pantropical species of Indian, Malagasy, or Indonesian origin. 2. Wide-ranging paleotropical species, which have not yet suc ceeded in establishing themselves in the neotropical region. 3. A considerable number of interesting indigenous or precinc tive forms, also with Old \Vorld affinities, but confined to particular island groups or islands. 4. A small number of neotropical forms confined to the islands off the coast of South America and Central America, because they have not been able to cross the broad belt of open water to the westward. -

Power1 # Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2018 Abstract Recent concern over increasing loss of biodiversity has prompted considerable interest in the role of urban green spaces as reservoirs of local biodiversity. This study assessed the diversity of three indicator taxa - plants, ants and birds - on golf courses spanning a wide range of environmental variation in terms of climate, elevation, course age, size and connectivity to native woodland. Species richness and community composition was further compared between contrasting on-course habitat types that reflect different management intensities. We identified a set of taxon-specific environmental correlates indicating an intricate interplay of landscape- and local-scale variables that affect local species diversity. Our results show that floristic diversity is positively associated with the amount of rainfall, whereas ant and bird diversity are related to local-scale factors, particularly the number of trees and the size of water features on a site. The amount of on-course native habitat was a strong predictor of plant and ant diversity and was also associated with the number of unique species at the site level; this reinforces the value of remnant habitat patches as local biodiversity reservoirs that represent minihot-spotsinanotherwisespecies-poorurban landscape. Community composition for all three taxa differed markedly between non-playing and playing areas, with boundary and remnant habitats generally having more diverse, species-rich communities. -
