It was another year of progress and noteworthy achievement, and we are delighted to share some of the highlights with you. In April, we celebrated the accomplishments of our 35th graduating class of Jefferson Scholars. In the class were a Schwarzman Scholar, a Fulbright Scholar, the Edgar Shannon Outstanding Engineering Student, the Ernest H. Ern Outstanding TIMOTHY J. INGRASSIA Chairman Student, and the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award winner. The class also included the managing editor of The Cavalier Daily, a Gray-Carrington Scholarship recipient, two vice-chairs of the Judiciary Committee, and the chair of the University Guide Service, along with the president of the Raven Society and a quadruple All-American national champion in Mock Trial. Eight members of the class lived on the Lawn, and the group graduated with a cumulative GPA of 3.77. We also celebrated a very impressive accomplishment of a Scholar alumnus, who graduated in 2018 and became the eighth member of the Jefferson Scholars community to win a Marshall Scholarship. The Scholars returning to Grounds in the fall of 2019 are well positioned to continue the legacy of excellence established by the more than 900 alumni of the Foundation. -

If someone were to create their own characters and creatures, one would have to learn what distinguishes a character from a creature. To find out what is crucial in creating characters and creatures, I evaluated various video games and cartoon shows to see what defining qualities I could gather from different characters and creatures, humans, and natural animals in the real world. From this research, I have concluded there are two key factors that distinguish characters and creatures: appearance and intelligence. The appearance factor is outlined via examples from video games and cartoons; while the intelligence factor is explained using a spectrum of intelligence, natural animals, and humans. It has 35 characters that are: Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Kirby, Fox, Pikachu, Marth, Mr. Game in Watch, Luigi, Diddy Kong, Zelda, Pit, Meta Knight, Falco, Pokémon Trainer, my favorite Ike, Snake, Peach, Yoshi, Ganandorf, Ice Climbers, King Dedede, Wolf, Lucario, Ness, Sonic, Bowser, Wario, Toon Link, R.O.B., Olimar, Captain Falcon, Jigglypuff, and Lucas. When you choose your character you can change his or her color. When that’s over, press the play button to continue. Then when you battle you can battle the CPU or you could battle a friend. There is a Subspace Emissary for you in case you ever want to play story mode. You can hook up on a Wi-Fi connection and battle people all over the world. The levels are awesome like Pokemon Stadium 2, Wario Ware, and Pirate Ship. When you battle other characters your goal is to win the battle. For example, if Ike is battling Bowser, and then Ike hits Bowser, then Ike gets a point. However, if you play stock mode then you have a couple of lives but when all your lives are gone then you lose that round. I would recommend this game. It was a particularly harsh year as no one wanted to adopt any child at all, as more came in, while the older kids were getting worried they would never find a new place to call home. But eight kids out of what was now forty, stood out. ~~~ A young boy about seven in age was frowning as a caretaker spoke with him. “N...No adopters today?” he asked, tearing up a bit. “No, unfortunately. I wish I could help you find a family that’s looking for such a sweet and caring boy to love as their own son, but no one’s looking.” The caretaker said back. “I’m sorry Tommy.” Young Tommy was literally the newest orphan at the orphanage, having just lost his family in a fire. A sweet, lovable little bro who deserves a good family, yet no one wanted him. “I do have this for you.” the caretaker then helped Tommy into an adorable set of Rockruff mitted, hooded, footies, compete with paws for the hands and feet, ears on the hood, and even a little tail. “Thank you, Vincent.” Tommy hugged the caretaker. “Alright, little pup. Time for bed.” Vincent said, tucking Tommy into bed with his Rockruff plushie. “Here’s hoping for 2017.” Tommy nodded, before falling asleep. ~~~ Over at another corner of the orphanage, another kid was slipping in and out of sleep in front of a tv when a caretaker came in.
